  • Are gimbals done? Have you been around long enough to remember the early gimbals like the Steadicam Merlin or the Glidecam 2000? Today we've got options like the Ronin, offering incredible smooth footage at the click of a button. But is the age of the gimbal coming to an end?
With cameras Sony A7S III and its built-in image stabilization, the need for a gimbal is being called into question. Sure, you can now capture steady shots handheld, but does that mean it's time to throw out the gimbal?
In this video John shares why he's pro-gimbal and won't be ditching his anytime soon AND shares his favorite gimbal shots to get on a wedding day.

Im with you, John, on this one. Its all about what the Move-meant. The camera's motion is speaking to the viewer and taking them.on an eMOTIONal journey. Intentional or not, everything is saying something. I dont see the gimbal leaving my gear essentials anytime soon.

I don't see gimbals leaving my bag either, for quite a while!

My multiple S5 II give me the craziest stability but long tracking I wouldn’t dare 😂 the Gimbal is in motion.

I don’t use one. My S5II does more than enough for me. Couple that with stabilization in Final Cut and I’m more than satisfied. I do think ibis technology will render gimbals obsolete at some point. I’m just happy that it is an option and not a necessity in 2024.

I think there will always be a place for gimbals, personally

I tried one wedding handheld to give it a shot and I liked certain things about it but I love the look of gimbal shots for almost every reason you pointed out. Except for dancing. I still go handheld for the party.

I go handheld for 95% of the reception but like a couple shots wide on the gimbal baby

I go handheld for most of the dancing. I just like getting a couple of shots with it being used to add a different feel

solution for gimbal shots. dji pocket 3 for that 2 or 3 shots you need on a gimbal. camera on gimbal all day means more metal or material between you and the subject leading to a disconnection

I ditched mine primarily because I use the Canon R6 with EF glass and it's impossible to balance. I had the Ronin-S, and just grew tired of it being so old, heavy, and clunky. I filmed a real estate video this week with the FX3, Sigma 20mm, and RSC2, and my mind might have been changed about gimbals. Still though, I don't use one enough for weddings to justify re-purchasing one. I hire a second who has one 🫡

yeah that makes sense. What about a dji pocket 3 or something?

I use gimbal for the bride walking down the aisle, first dance and the details. It is so much better than handheld.

It comes down to the edit and the type of day it was.
If the day was very somber and more of a romantic slow move then 100% you are not going to be able to hide handheld shots in the edit.
On the other hand if it was an absolute crazy day and a lot of stuff going on that is easily able to hide handheld / jittery / sea sickness shots in the edit.
In my opinion I would prefer to shoot way solid with a gimbal and tripods and then if the footage needs to be crazy just mix it up in the edit you can't do the reverse with already shaky footage.

yeah that is definitely a good approach. It just depends on what you are going for! I tend to lean the same way

@@HowToFilmWed Please, do! We'd be happy to see some real-life scenario comparisons with your work-horse camera. I see only one problem - lack of close-up possibilities...

What do you think about the use of a gimbal? Do you agree with John or not? 👇
