Yay :) Some explanation, re: a question I was pondering and asking for years.
As new: Seals do have sufficiently snug fit, to metal, to prevent leak.
With age of service: It's interaction between oil formulation and rubber technology?
The latter is a whole different science, to oil formulation: wear protection/ detergency/ etc?
Racing oils - High ester, short term? For mere mortals: A distinction would seem to be -
Analysis of the terms: PLIABILITY v/s SWELLING? Excess swelling would lead to early leak in new seals?
Some swelling would control leak in old, worn seals?

Yes, I think that about summarises it. I've never really understood how some of those full-ester racing oils work - if maybe they use a different seal material or whether they're just banking on only needing to use the engine oil for a race duration.

@@LubricationExplained Esters are The Best Lube, short term? Win, all important?
Racing, who cares? Engines rebuilt, frequently. Sponsors' Big Bucks :)

I am currently measuring seal swell with a rig that I built for the University of Alabama. Great video!

have you come to any conclusion? what is the swell %? and what materials

Hi, Mr. LE, I'd like to ask if Is The interaction of chlorinated parafins that shrink and make elastomers brittle, or is the resultant HCl2 acid in usage that does it? What about Polyether Amines (nitrogenates), as engine lubricant and fuel additives would go swelling or shrinking them?

To be honest with you I don't have an answer on chlorinated paraffins - I don't really know enough about them. Polyether Amines look like they would have similar polarity to an AN - a little more polar than paraffinic base oils but a little less than an ester. So I suspect they'd be relatively inert when it comes to seal swell.
