As always an excellent review and presentation. What i am wondering regarding the plus versions (of the customs and the 550) is whether the inclusion of the EMG pickups (being the main upgrade with respect to the standard HB models) is indeed a justification to choose these models, rather than buying one of the standard models and upgrading the pickups. For the custom model especially, the price difference of 150 euros is enough to buy a good set of Seymour Duncan pickups. I would really like to see a HB version of the sc-custom or sc-550 with better passive pickups. Imagine a sc-550 with a SH 59 set or even Gibson's 490.
So this is basically a clone of the LTD-1000 Deluxe. I ain't mad at it. It just explains some of different cosmetic stuff like the 3 knob layout and the pointy horn.

You can hear it!Harley Bentons are Maturing..That guitar you put together may have been a catalyst for a New Era at HB..Great review..can't wait for the next review of the 2 guitars .
Years ago, before HB, I bought a Shine/Saein bass in one of the Denmark Street shops in London (who needs to know, knows :) ) It cost me about 100 quid - back when Ibanez basses started at around 220-250. Those entry level brand-name instruments were no better. So I went for the Shine. After doing some digging, mind, it was years ago when the Internet was a fraction of its self now, I discovered that the bass was made in the factory churning out entry level models for top brands. It was also suspiciously similar to ... ehm... I'm a guitarist so the bass was just for fun, but it got me thinking. Now, HB is doing this on a massive and higher market level while reigning supreme on the entry level market. Which is excellent - you no longer need a fortune, whatever that means for you, to get a decent instrument and even on the entry level, you can have confidence that you're not buying a piece of crap. It's no longer 'a good guitar for a price'. It's a good guitar. Sure, if you're a brand snob, you'll look elsewhere. The interesting thing is that only Thomann could pull this off - being in control on the entire chain and the store. Any new guitar maker could not afford a decade of building a brand from bottom up. I find it an insteresting business model - it's extremely long-term but it does work. Now they're developing their own identity and seems they are more than competitive. I wish I was a budding guitarist now because I wouldn't have struggled with a second hand POS guitar.
I've been watchin' Harley Benton, make their way , up the improvement scale, for quite some time. Thanks, to your critiques. I own, 6 of them, and have no complaints. They were all, purchased, within the last 15 months. But I can see, many esthetic, mechanical , and electrical improvements, in the newer models. I had faith, they could do it. I think, they are on their way, to finding their place, among the upper echelon , of the guitar manufacturing elite. Hopefully, they will keep the price, affordable, and available, to the many players , out there, that are looking, for a well made, quality instrument. When I purchased ,my first one, I knew, this wasn't just another "CHEAP GUITAR". They are Amazing!. That's all ,I can say. Thanks, Henning, for doing these reviews.
