From an European perspective - it's a frequent symbol in my honest opinion in European churches. It's not an "anti-christian" symbol of anything of the sort.
Fascinating! I remember being in Florence and also saw numerous stars of David on different churches. Found it quite strange. But this one definitely sticks out.
Just went down the rabbit hole of Neo Gothic Revival + Santa Croce Basilica's storied history. Found a photo of at least one more Star of David in the interior marble. Niccolo Matas has his own wikipedia page, which is also handy. Love how you find these incredibly interesting characters in Jewish history. IMHO Matas is just a super talented, ambitious, pioneering architect enjoying the freedom of not being ghettoized. During the same period in Germany, weren't Jews making their mark throughout larger society, academically + otherwise? Facciamo un bell'applauso Niccolo Matas 👏
in the ken burns documentary of da vinci they state that this church where he worked with the 14 year old francisco melzi had a church that you talk about but the church is totally diffferent than the one you describe in florence. It is stated in the documentary that he left florence and returned to milan where he settled in the parish church which looks entirely different than the one in florence you talk about. Which is the correct depiction, yours or the ken burns version?
Europe is full of churches with the star of David in the mosaic artwork. Palma de Mallorca has a fantastic cathedral, financed and built by the crypto jews in Palma.
I HAD A DREAM OF STAR OF DAVID FROM G-D AND BK TO MY JEWISH ROOTS ✡! I GOT IT TATTOO ON MY CHEEK!! I ENDED UP WITH CHABAD AND IT WAS SABBATH AND THE NIGHT OF LEADERSHIP CELEBRATION OF REBBE !!
@@Nudnik1 the “New Testament” is a document written mostly by Jews for the greater glory of Judaism, not the Judaism of the Jews who would pervert Yehueh’s words for their selfish aims but those who obey His Torah. Santa croce means the holly cross...was he a converted jew that believed in the holiyness of the cross ? Even Nicolas is a christian name..
Perhaps he was a Messianic Jew.
An extra reason for kohanim to not go inside that church.

Too late! However according to Hebrews 8:8 one cannot be covered by the New Covenant unless one becomes a Jew, like Ruth.
