Thank you very much for the video. I recently brought a harmonium from India from a very reputable shop. Within weeks of use, the keys started sticking. I did realize that due to the humidity and the temperature changes the wood was contracting or expanding. But I did not know how to fix it and felt frustrated and somewhat cheated by the vendor. But thanks to you, I can fix this issue easily.
Thanks, Ashish! Glad to help. Keep in touch, and for a slightly more trouble-free experience, be sure to check out olddelhimusic.com. We've been doing this importing thing for a while now, and we're pretty expert in not only getting the best stuff but also definitely taking care of all of this refinement stuff you are working out now. AND the best part is if you don't like something we send you, you can return it... Thanks again! -Nic
Thank you so much! just bought a second hand harmonium with a quite sticky key F - did not dare to open this instrument, but your video has encouraged me 😇
Thank you so much! I got mine today by mail order and had one stuck one. Couldn't get the key out, my design is different inside than yours....but I was able to file the sides by sticking an emery board between the keys.
Fantastic video once again but same question similar to coupler video. If I have a sticky key will removing the coupler make the sticky key go or is coupler not effecting the sticky key. The sandpaper seems like to be the best tip and that pin in the centre
Remove all keys and then assess the movement of the lever that turns on the coupling mechanism. I am assuming it needs bent a little so it can rest in an appropriate position. Good luck!
I got a bhava harmonium from old delhi music and have like 4 sticky keys. It was in storage so maybe got hot. Im afraid to do the repair Woukd an instrument shop be able to repaie it without charging an arm and leg?
Sorry to hear this. Leaving an instrument (of any sort) in the heat will definitely cause things to shift. We unfortunately can’t do anything to prevent that. The good news is that between the advice we have available here and resources like The Harmonium Handbook, you should (at a minimum) be able to fix the sticky keys without much trouble. That being said, you could have bigger issues like a cracked reed board and the only thing you are noticing is the keys that are being pushed together… start by fixing the keys and look for cracks underneath on the key bed as you are working on them. Good luck!
I am having a different problem one of the key is not fully closing the holes so when coupler is on I hear sound without keypress, this does not happen when coupler is off? any help.
Octave couplers can be quite problematic and difficult to fix. If your key is only sticking with the octave coupler on, then something is out of alignment in the coupler, likely the front wire under the key in question. See this other video about what an octave coupler does and how to access its working parts. ua-cam.com/video/mBCc95D2070/v-deo.html
I generally prefer / use a dry silicone lubricant to prevent squeaks, but only if nothing else works. What you do / use depends on what you are trying to lubricate. Overall, you will not typically need to lubricate much on a harmonium.
Thanks so much had a couple of sticky keys on my brand new harmonium which happened at the onset of monsoon due to the extra humidity and couldn’t even get a repair guy due to lockdown. Followed these instructions and did it myself and it worked perfectly! Thank you and all you guys who share your knowledge freely on the internet on this and (pretty much) every topic under the sun!! Love light peace!! You may check out my channel on ua-cam.com/users/sanjivshah

Many thanks for this video, could u pls also confirm what sort of sandpaper you used? Regards
Typically 150-220 grit are safe. I would not recommend anything with a lower grit.
Great video 👍

How do you fix / reenforce a coupler that’s wont stay steady?
Remove all keys and then assess the movement of the lever that turns on the coupling mechanism. I am assuming it needs bent a little so it can rest in an appropriate position. Good luck!

How can I fix the black broken keys
What kind of numerical grit is medium? 400?
Medium grit is more like 120-180 grit. 220 grit and above is fine.

Harmonium mein ras dalna kya hota hai aur yeh kaise dala jata hai?
for me the problem is a loose pin where can I buy a set of pins? can anyone help?
The pins are just cut nails. You can buy small trim nails like this at any hardware store. Cut them off with a wire cutter tool.
Thank you
