Nic, you're awesome! I'm just getting reacquainted with my harmonium and it looks like mine is from the same manufacturer and the model in this video; hardware, etc matches. I'm thinking about removing my coupler because it tends to jam things up and usually, I can't hear the coupled notes anyway. Maybe I just need to watch some more of your videos, just found you last night. Thanks for being here!
This was super helpful! Just received a harmonium from India and the keys, many of them were stuck. Took it apart following your instructions and found that the coupler board wasn't even attached !!! Took it out and replaced the keys and it works beautifully now.
1:14 if there's like 1 or 2 keys that feel jammed. Do you have to remove the coupler to fix it or can you take off that single key clean that fury bit on the reverse side and place it back.
2:16! I removed all my keys but one was nails in! That centre nail now it's hard to remove and nail back in omg :( has eBay done that on purpose so I can't open it up or something
On most Delhi- or Punjabi-style harmoniums, the top surface of the rear parts of the keys (usually yellow or orange in color) will have two marks scored across all of the keys, one straight across and one on a diagonal, which enable you to tell which key goes where by lining the marks up.
hi Nic..I was wondering if it's possible to add a coupler to a harmonium which didn't have one when it was built? If so what factors need to be taken into consideration? Many thanks, Qasim
+Qasim Shah - Without serious modification, probably not. The keys have to be elevated to accommodate the octave coupler, so fundamentally a harmonium that has a coupler is designed to have this mechanism included, whereas a harmonium with no coupler will not be designed to have the mechanism under the keys. To add a coupler to one of these, you'd have to rebuild the whole reedboard/key structure. In this case, you'd basically be better off to buy a new harmonium that has a coupler included. Please email if you have any other questions - olddelhimusic@gmail.com. Thanks! - Nic
I have paul and company harmonium but the coupler wont stay actrive it keeps comingout after a few mins of playing. what is the solution to keep the coupler engaged?
Arpit - Good interacting via email yesterday. In case others are unaware, I'll just note here that the coupler mechanism in a Kolkata style harmonium (like your Paul) is totally different from the mechanism on a Punjabi / Delhi style box like what is shown in this video. This video is not applicable to Kolkata style harmoniums.
Hi Paul - Thanks for the question. We make these modifications all the time. For this, you basically have two options - You can either file down the reeds a half step (this takes multiple passes to settle out properly), or you can swap reeds with an octave higher C4, D4, G4, and A4. The reason you can't swap for the same octave is because the drone reeds are filed really thin and are actually much smaller than a typical C3, D3, G3, and A3. A comparably sized standard C4... reed will fit great. - Nic
The cost varies based on the item and dimension. For a shipping quote, email me at olddelhimusic@gmail.com with the details about what you want. Please include your shipping address and I will get back to you with the cost. Thanks! -Nic
