Penner is definitely a villain here but he's such a logical one that I couldn't help but side with him in pretty much every situation. One of my favorite players.
I always find it SO FUNNY that Penner’s became known as a “rat” or a “snake” for doing things in the early ages that became “big moves” and just a normal part of survivor as survivor grew and went on, truly I think he was lowkey a trend setter/ahead of his time for the show, and will always be one of my favorite players ever
I still will never understand how Candice was a "hero" of this season. This video really rekindled my love of Penner, it can be so frustrating knowing he had to be a much worse player in order to relate to his tribe and have a chance to win the season.
I don't get it, either. To me, that says there are few "heroes" playing Survivor, if they had to resort to Candace. Either that, or the heroes don't want to play again. I would argue that most (if not all) of the "heroes" on HvV could have been equally cast as villains.
I love the scene of Jonathan trying to get Candice/Adam/Parvati to understand Yul has the Idol with them insisting he can't, despite them not having it. What's really underrated though, is the follow up to that scene after the Nate vote, where they still insist to Penner that Yul doesn't have the Idol, only for him to silence them by going "He LITERALLY showed me the Idol!".
Always loved Penner and his sass towards Jeff, in a fun way. Bummed he had to be medically removed in Micronesia because he really was having a good game.
Okay, he may have been a villain, but if I was stuck with several other people, who don't do anything at camp and don't even try to think strategically, I would've flipped back too. Not to mention the fact that the trash talking after auction was an absolute bullcrap. ,,Oh no I didn't try enough to win anything so I'm gonna trash Jonathan for winning". These were the main reasons why I was rooting for him watching this season for the first time. Trying and possibly failing is better than doing nothing.
Penner’s big miscalculation was choosing loyalty to Candice at the mutiny. It’s frustrating how neither she nor the alliance she jumped ship to rejoin recognized that act as loyalty. He gets painted as a flip-flopper, while she doesn’t. But they’re all rather stupid, cliquish people, failing to recognize how treating him poorly from that point on would rebound after the merge when whomever was on the bottom of the new tribe would inevitably need an ally. When Candice would return in later seasons, I was also puzzled, because her gameplay was and continued to be almost entirely undistinguished. Penner’s returns are always welcomed, even if he has proven where his social game lacks. Penner’s gameplay makes Yul’s story possible, giving Yul a real underdog narrative and then a strategic clutch move post-merge. Not to take anything away from Yul, who always had the capacity to be a great player no matter what.
The one thing I'll say in their defense is that producers are looking for material to work with. They might say five things that are nice about a player, but they'll use the one negative one that makes for good television. Penner more than anyone knows this. I'm not saying the players are actors but I'm sure they exaggerate for effect
When i rewatched Penner this season I realized how bad he was socially. The only one who truly trusted him or was happy to work with him was Yul. Mainly because Yul knew he was someone he could beat at the end. He definitely was playing the game a bit too hard and while others treated him poorly he also did a lot of that himself.
For me it feels a bit unfair to say he was awful socially, especially when everyone seemed to peg him as shady and untrustworthy before he even did anything.
Also it's kinda hard to make solid social connections when there are only 5 members in your starting tribe, and you are the only one in your 40's, while your tribemates are two sorority girls, a frat boy, and a hippie all in their 20's. Not exactly a winning hand to be dealt. Cleary the tribe was structured for someone like Parvati to flourish much easier than Penner.
I'll never understand why other candidates and the edit are so mad at Penner in this season. He always seemed to me like a logical yet still human player (even more so in his 2 next appearances), and all of this dunking on him made me empathize with him a lot more.
Sometimes, a player gets perceived as shady and deceptive before they even do anything, and it makes it near difficult to make inroads with people from day one. This definitely happened to Penner this season. Everyone on his origional tribe just chose not to trust him, not for anything he did, but just because. Yul seemed like the only player that actually made an effort to connect with him.
That's how they edited it, but apparently, it reality, it wasn't like that at all. Many other people got great items that we didn't see on the show. People being mad at him after the challenge was apparently only because Adam and Parvati were badmouthing him so much that even the Aitu members felt awkward saying anything even remotely "non-negative" about him. And yes, that last part was actually said by *the Raros* after the game. Nate and Candice basically spent a *massive* portion of their post-game interviews just apologizing for how they treated Jonathan and trying to let the audience know that *none* of what they said was true and that he (tried to be) actually a *very* good friend even *on* the show.

It's probably not a coincidence that I have a similar personality and game views as Yul, since I would love to play with a guy like Penner. Made a risky decision by sticking with Candice and seemingly was truthful in wanting top 4 of him, Candice, Adam and Parv, but for whatever reason Candice just hated him so much she would rather sabotage her and her friends and her lovers games, than listen to him for once. Pretty weird to see Parv act so dumb as well, considering what she would later grow into.
Penner is one of my top 5 favorite players. One thing to note about Cook Islands was 17 of the 20 were recruited players. I think Candice was the only major player that wasn't recruited to join the show. That may be why so many players were from California. If you're going to recruit a diverse cast of players, California is the best place to go. Cook Islands messed up with dividing the tribes by ethnicity, but the way it played out made for a great season of diverse players.

Unlucky for him, should have stayed with his original tribe. Those people in the other tribe were such lazy slackers. I love it when Jonathan finally speaks up and destroys their silly arguments. He was being their daddy and they showed him zero appreciation.
Jonathan not voting out Yul to get the idol out of his hands was a terrible move. Nate would have still went home because of the idol but Raro wouldnt have been furious at him essentially sealing his fate. He could then still decide to go either way for the next vote and not have to worry about Yul`s idol. Instead, he votes out Nate, which turns all the Raro`s against him and keeps Yul having all the power.
the problem was Raro not believing him at all + a lack of trust from Raro. Yul showed him trust despite his mutiny. Plus, he's an opportunist. He realised switching sides would allow him to survive longer. Otherwise, he was next to go. Hence, he decided to switch back to Yul's side .
Honestly penner played pretty logically. He made a big move by leaving to try and work out his plan but it didn't work out so he just tried to be useful and got a ticket to merge.
