    OM did a great job, it is a true Pro lens. For OM and M43 in general, it makes the lens line up very professional. For enthusiasts like myself, it makes me appreciate my 60mm more.

    Must admit I'm a bit disappointed today! I'm sure this lens will be fantastic if you're a macro specialist but today's release was so over-hyped that I'd hoped something else would be announced at the same time. Apart from potentially a couple of telephoto zooms, the lens roadmap now shows no new development - when will we get new versions of the f1.8 primes or more f1.4 lenses? What about a Pen F mk ii, or a slightly cheaper body that uses the new stacked sensor from the OM1? It seems that OM system want to concentrate solely on niche areas (wildlife/macro) and neglect every other genre...

      That's what i thought too, it's all about expensive nature photography. Besides the hype, the lens is not that special if you consider the following: If you use e.g. the Canon RF 100mm Macro on an APS-C body, you still get 160mm equivalent, which is close to the Olympus. However, i don't know how the maximum imaging scale (1,4:1) changes with a smaller sensor. The price for the Canon RF in my country is 220.-- euro lower than the Olympus. Ok, teleconverter is special but they cost another fortune.

    • @mico7292

      Totally agree with that, it's a disappointment for the future and I think it's not in line with the spirit and past success of the micro 4/3.

    Cracking informative video: Thanks Jimmy. I ordered mine yesterday. It will be the equivalent of my FF Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro lens, which also worked with my Sigma TC14. I purchased it for my Nikon D500 and used a dumb adaptor for use with my EM1.2, but that wasn't a great success. This is new OMS 90mm macro is my dream macro lens. Though my Sigma 180mm was fantastic, it was also very heavy and cost £1300 some time ago. So this OMS 90mm macro is actually better value, given it's sync IS and native 2 x magnification. It will do for me.

    Looks fantastic🥂 I'd love to see some portraiture and street shots.
    Does the magnification include the m4/3 crop? Spec sheets can be a bit inconsistent on this.
    The Sigma 70mm SLR macro takes TCs, too, as does the 105mm (in L-mount, not E-mount)
    I'm very interested (for macro and tele), but that price means that I'd be waiting for a while for price drops and promotions.
    A comparison of the results with both the TCs would be welcome - normally I'd avoid 2x, but for a prime it's a different story.

      300 mm f4 is a sweat spot in wild photography, you can definitely shoot butterflies, snakes, and birds or even a deer, ANYTHING.. is like all in one. You can keep x1.4 tele for better macro shots and it's fine. I think 60 mm macro is for more product photography than macro nature shots but still good stuff for everyday macro except 300 mm f4. But 90 mm is for... yeah? for who?.. you think twice after a while.. it's a specific product... untill you are a literally macro maniac and you have have your own spider collection at home then maybe, or you shoot only mushrooms in forest, then maybe.. for every day.. that's obviously too much of need.

    With a macro lens, the longer the focal length, the further you can be away from the subject, which aids the DoF i.e. you actually have a DoF.
    And alleviates shadows from the camera.
    The longest film SLR I have is the Auto Chinon MC 55-225mm f/3.5-4.5 Macro (at the long end) but that only goes down to 1:2 (half size), but can take the Kiron 2X TC. Chinon would often out-Asahi Pentax on the glassware, and add macro to their equivalent lenses. Obviously it is all manual on a PK-MFT adapter and has to be bolted to something very solid in use, which does not help when your subject is crawling about on a plant. A macro-flash or diffuser snoot is the normal thing for more light. You might pick one up for under 30 quid although they're not around in great numbers. And has none of the advantages of the new all-singing all-dancing OM System M.Zuiko 90mm Macro f3.5 IS PRO which I do see as a specialist professional lens due to its cost (& the TC too), it would have to pay for its keep.

  • @keithholland4322
    @keithholland4322 Рік тому

    WOW! What a lens! This lens absolutely runs circles around every other macro lens on the market from any manufacturer if you ask me! And I haven't even used it yet! Being able to use teleconverters makes this lens extremely versatile, not only because of the increased magnification, but also because it provides extra reach. With a Nikon 200mm f/4 macro, for instance, you can put it on a crop sensor camera body and effectively have a 300mm macro lens, but with an MC-20, this lens becomes a 360mm full frame equivalent lens, making it even easier to take photos of subjects such as butterflies, for instance. While I have a 60mm macro lens, I usually use the 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro with the MC-20 for taking photos of butterflies, dragonflies, and other flying insects because such insects don't usually allow a person to get close enough with a 60mm macro lens. This lens has the versatility of being able to take those types of photos and also being able to get extreme magnification because of its S Macro mode and its teleconverter compatibility.
    By the way, if you want to find insects and other creepy crawlies during the winter, try looking under some rotten logs. You might be surprised at the quantity and variety you find.

    • @christianmayrhofer4178
      @christianmayrhofer4178 Рік тому

      I doubt that the image quality with the mc20 converter is still really good, besides there is a strong light loss and the ISO has to go up. Teleconverter compatible may be a nice selling point at first glance, but whether it is usable in practice remains to be seen. Disturbing insects in their winter quarters doesn't seem very intelligent or animal-friendly to me, by the way.

    • @keithholland4322
      @keithholland4322 Рік тому

      @@christianmayrhofer4178 With macro photography, you don't usually have to go beyond base ISO no matter how much you stop down because you can just turn up the power on the flash. At some point you encounter diffraction, but it's usually not too bad until you get up to about f/16 on an MFT sensor. I usually try not to go beyond f/11, but f/14 is usable. With the 2x teleconverter, you're at f/7 in normal mode and f/10 in S mode, so that's not bad at all. I've taken lots of landscape and macro photos with such apertures.
      Oh, and I've used the MC-20 quite a bit. In fact, I've used it with the 40-150 f/2.8 for most of my wildlife photography. The image quality is outstanding! I was shocked at how much sharper my images were with the 40-150 and MC-20 than with the Panasonic 100-300 that I had been using! Usually 2x teleconverters significantly degrade image quality, but not the MC-20. They usually also reduce focus speed and accuracy, especially on SLRs, but I haven't found that to be the case with the MC-20. Maybe that's just because the AF on my E-M1 Mark II leaves a lot to be desired regardless! lol But I find it to be very fast and accurate for just about anything besides birds in flight. Perched birds, snakes, frogs, and most mammals are no problem at all. At any rate, the MC-20 shouldn't reduce image quality or focus speed and accuracy for macro photography.
      And I put the insects back where they came from when I'm done, by the way.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  Рік тому

      Any camera body is not restricted by f number. That's the lens itself. The smaller the number, the bigger the aperture (more light will go into the camera sensor). But it will also mean larger size in general. A f3.5 lens will be a f3.5 lens for any camera, regardless of format or brand. So this lens is a f3.5 and will operate within the given range that the lens offer (largest f3.5 all the way down to f22).

      The lens is too expensive and delivers 2:1 which i understood. Consider: A 100mm FF Macro can be used on an APS-C body (Canon crop x1.6). Many forget this and already the advantage of the high price Olympus shrinks.

    • @RobShootPhotos
      @RobShootPhotos Рік тому +1

      @@christianmayrhofer4178 The $1,300 Canon RF 100mm lens, it is a 1.4:1 magnification lens and with the Canon RF crop sensor of 1.6x, does give you 2:1 full frame equivalent. However, the $550 Olympus 60mm 1:1 give you 2:1 full frame equivalent. Much cheaper and smaller setup than Canon. This 90mm gives you 2:1 and with the 2x crop sensor of a 43rds sensor gives you 4:1 in full frame equivalent without adding extension tubes or teleconverters.
      If Canon actually made their 100mm a 2:1 instead of a 1.4:1, likely it would be as expensive as this OM-SYSTEM lens or even more expensive. Just a thought.

    It's so expensive, it would be cheaper to buy a used Canon 100mm f2.8 IS L AND a Nikon 200mm f4 Micro. The extension tubes I have for my 100mm L lens cost like 15 bucks and give electronic aperture control, AF, and IS. I don't know if it will get me to 4:1, but it gets close enough for me to realize that AF is useless at such high magnifications. The Canon 100mm f2.8 IS L is not very much bigger than this, less than half the price, has no flaws, and can be adapted to any mirrorless camera available today, including full frame sensors. Its f2.8 too. If I had my time back, I don't know if I'd even buy the L lens again, a manual focus 100mm macro would be a lot cheaper, and all 100mm macro lenses are super sharp, unless they're broken or something. But with the L lens, I use it a lot on full frame as a portrait lens or walk around telephoto, where the AF actually is very useful, and it takes such beautiful pictures, I think I'll keep it. This Olympus lens though, it would be a lot cheaper to buy a dedicated macro lens, and a nice dedicated portrait lens, than to get this. It costs more than I paid for my L lens AND my first Canon full frame camera put together. I actually can't think of any other macro lens that I know of that costs in the thousands of dollars, this really is the most expensive way that exists of getting macro photos on an Olympus camera, or any camera outside of the truly exotic.
    I'm sure its a great lens, I actually love it, unfortunately, its more expensive than any other similar option ever, and will only ever work on Olympus or Panasonic cameras. At least when I buy an EF lens or a manual focus dslr lens, I know I'll be able to keep using it for years and years on a variety of different cameras. If I want an AF macro for mft I'll get the Olympus 60mm, its f2.8, a better focal length for hand held walking around macro shooting, and costs in the hundreds of dollars, in line with similar options throughout history. If I'm shooting macro at 180mm equivalent and magnification greater than 1:1, I'm most likely going to be indoors and using lights, the camera's going to be on a tripod, and can more easily get the focus I want by hand than automatically. In such a situation, if I had this lens, it wouldn't be doing a lot more for me than any old Pentax you find on ebay or at a garage sale. Sure you can also use it as a general tele lens out walking around, but again, its actually cheaper to pick almost any combination of a telephoto lens and a macro lens than it would be to buy this. Its also in the price range that you can consider other brands macro lenses AND a camera instead of this, which seems like a bad strategy to me. I think it should be 699US, but I'm a cheapskate, they could probably charge 799 or even 899, but the current pricing is ridiculous.

    Oh my. Another one fell for the "4 times" trap. This is a 2:1 90 mm lens. Period.
    I have no idea why OM thinks it works best for them to mislead customers.
    Oh, by the way: if you crop into the final picture, you can make it a 8:1 macro lens! Amazing, isn't it?! You heard it here first.

    • @chrispatmore8944
      @chrispatmore8944 Рік тому

      Exactly. If it's 1:1 it doesn't matter the sensor size, it just fills more of the frame on M4/3. This whole equating lens focal lengths and D0F with 35mm sensors is a pointless exercise, and is for marketing departments and other folks that don't understand the maths and physics of cameras and lenses.

    I know you are an ambassador, and you have to basically do paid advertisements for OM System, but some of your statements are highly misleading, and could even get you in legal troubles in some countries (I know that you can hide behind UA-cam and the big internet, but this doesn’t make it any better).
    You need an example? “Feels mechanical”. Maybe next time you would have the decency to mention that the clutch is just by wire, but it has a nice feeling nonetheless? Unfortunately there are many other sleezy examples in this ~20 minutes clip.
    A little bit shame on you! Follow your passion, not the money. This video makes me slightly sad.

    Buying macro lens for 1500 dollars like there are no other cheaper macro lenses on the market :D quite ridiculous. Full frame gives you much much better image quality than any micro four thirds tiny sensor. And I use micro four thirds daily, don't get me wrong (also as my full frame). But the prices of some lenses are absolutely ridiculous for what it can do.
