Factoring in all that information about how hard it is to fly, how far it is to drive, and how cheap that is in comparison to everything as well as how nice the whole thing just seems... the people who invented this bus service and design are GENIUSES and deserve to rake in the cash.

My wife has used Vonlane twice to get to Dallas from our home in the Houston area, for some work training she needed to attend. I dropped her off and picked her up at that Hyatt in downtown Houston each time. She loved the bus rides. Not having to deal with airports and airplanes for such a short trip is a big deal, and not having to drive I-45 by herself was great too.

The issue is I don’t think the state government cares enough about us to even truly get things going with high speed rail but yes we really need it. I’m just happy San Antonio international is finally expanding enough to make my work travel out of here more bearable but damn I’d love to just take rail to IAH and fly out of there since I use United Airlines the most. My saving grace is the fact that United uses SAT as a “hublet” which I learned was a thing a month ago lol

The problem with rial is of course that it requires a land corridor. Not a deal breaker, BUT it means you have to PAY market rates for the "right of way" or cause much angst by invoking "eminent domain"...

Vonlane was very nice. Maybe not quite a private jet level, but far nicer than the Greyhound. Seems like a peaceful way to get between the two cities, not a lot of other options other than flying (or using your own vehicle).

Life long Texan here born and raised and still currently living here and way back in the early 2000s I studied law and legal reasons are the reason why that high speed rail between Dallas and Houston will never happen. The main one is called eminent domain and how it's legally applied and interpreted between the federal, state, and even the different Texas counties is all different. Lastly I would add I have family friends who have taken this service more than once and they all speak highly of it so I might try this one out one day.

Add to that an 8 day road trip from Vegas to the Grand Canyon, to Sedona, thru the Grand Staicase-Escalante National Monument, to Zion and up to Bryce before heading back to Vegas to fly back to Huntsville, AL. All three of those trip were in 2020 and early 2021. I am immuno compromised and diabetic, mom had major intestinal surgery in late Feb of 2020 and is diabetic as well. Southwest was AMAZING on both trips out and back. On the second trip, they had just started allowing the middle seat to be purchased again, but they let us buy a third seat and reimbursed us both ways because the flights were not booked 100%. I never felt safer, health wise than I did on those COVID trips... No one tried to smash up against us, anywhere. The National Parks and Sedona were at, maybe, 20% of their normal usage, and it was SPECTACULAR not having the hordes of crushing tourists all up your backside, as is the case before and after...
I started watching during the pandemic because of our travels...

As someone who took Vonlane countless times between Dallas and Austin in high school and college (divorced parents so usually every other weekend and then college/uni in Atx ) I can say it’s really way easier than driving yourself and flying.
Meal wise you didn’t miss out on much- they do salads, wraps, and sandwiches.
At some point in the beginning I think it did actually go to downtown Dallas- but most people in Dallas live in the suburbs, especially north side. So not many of the riders like dealing with the unexpected traffic.
As far as a train- I honestly don’t even know if many would use that option in Texas- it’s kind of a pride thing to drive.

$99 is pretty cheap and cheaper if it is only one person. Gas, wear and tear and time with your own vehicle would cost the same or more if you were to go by yourself. I could see if you had to make more stops than just downtown but otherwise, to go from city to city it is pretty cheap. @@remogatron1010

That's really interesting that you say Love Field is "nowhere near" Downtown Dallas. From my perspective, I've always considered Love Field to be "practically downtown." I was shocked when I just googled it and saw that Love Field is 7 miles from downtown! I guess I've just had a couple decades getting used to Texas distances.

YES loved this video! I took the exact route you did from Htown to dallas back in April 2023! My friend and I stayed downtown htown for a concert and needed a ride to catch the next concert in Dallas. We were not sure whether to book a flight or a bus given flying for about 30 minutes was just a hassle and super expensive compared to a bus! Fortunately I pitched the Vonlane last minute when I was doing some research and thank goodness! Neither of us wanted to get on a Greyhound lol 😅
We took the 10:30am trip and we got a meal besides all the snacks. It was cold lunches, I believe I got some sort of a turkey sandwich and I enjoyed it! If I remember correctly, there was a chicken wrap option as well which my friend took. Overall, both of us did not want to fly nor take a grubby bus but Vonlane was definitely the best choice for us. Clean, provided a meal, snacks, drinks free wifi! For a short 3 hour trip it was perfect !

When I lived in Houston I used this service. It was great especially when I had to go to Austin for work. For those unaware driving to Austin from Houston sucks majorly. As the highway into town abruptly becomes a road with a bunch of red lights quite a distance away from the city. At least it did when I lived there.

I wish they would use more double decker style busses. The top should be the ultimate lounge area. That way they can spread the seats into big sofa style sleepers and have a great view of the roads & stars at night with an glass roof top.
I always wanted to take a bus from Seattle to PDX back in my early military days. But there really was only one option at the time and that was the Airport. After 911, I never really bothered.
Amtrack Starlight express was fun. But it really is just more convenient to just drive.

I love bus travel but good busses are hard to find. They are mostly local service buses that take you a few hours in multiple directions. Greyhound is in a tough spot as they have to take everybody and can't go luxurious. I'll never forget being on a Greyhound for a cross country run and at one point I think it was an immigration agent boards the bus and walks around and leaves. The luxurious bus you were on was fantastic and I would ride it in a heartbeat. Really nice.

When you really start getting longer distances buses I think trains mostly should replace them. Unless it's a very small destination of course. But between large cities in Texas there should absolutely be a quick and modern train service instead.

I've taken the route between Dallas & Houston about a thousand times (I work in Houston, family lives in Dallas, I try and go home most weekends).
    - Flying is okay (the best option is Love Field to Hobby, since they're both closer to downtown in each city). Every once in a while, Southwest has $49 tickets between the two cities, which is hard to beat.
    - Greyhound is a nightmare. Megabus works okay (I've never been delayed by them), but it's a little annoying that Megabus just picks up/drops off in a parking lot in downtown Houston rather than a bus station (arriving to that area after sunset is always a little terrifying). However, tickets are dirt cheap (you can sometimes get $5-10 tickets on either Greyhound or Megabus).
    - After all these years, I've realized that driving myself is always my best option. The trip ends up being around $10 in gas (I get 40 mpg in my VW), 3.5 hrs from Dallas to Houston, and I don't have to worry about getting rides to/from the stations. Also the benefits of stopping where/when I want to and having the privacy of my own car.

Such a shame that's the case, as it's the least environmental. I'm not knocking you, I ended up doing something similar to visit family. So car it was

If it were just me, I sometimes would take the Vonlane. Otherwise, I do this trip for the same reasons via my used Lexus that gets 30 MPG. We've taken Vonlane as a couple when we are not going to be spending much time in the northern part of Dallas and the Uber costs wont rack up. You will see lots of lawyers on Vonlane since they can work during the trip without the hassles of flying. It's also great for older folks who don't like to drive a long distance or who no longer drive (and for whom air travel is burdensome).
