I saw this and was like: why do I never see pins on my birds feathers? But now I know what they are actually doing all the time when I think they are having snuggles and giving each other massage nibbels! They are grooming each other!🥰🪶
Hello. My bird also has these types of things. Is it harmful? Should I clean them? My bird is quite fearful and shy. If I need to clean, how should I clean it?
Hello! Welcome! No, these are not harmful to your bird :) and they can be left alone, although scratching their head is a good way to bond with them. If you want to know a little more information on these I made a video for that: ua-cam.com/video/UM030DzUWrc/v-deo.html If your bird is shy, I recommend trying to spend some more time with them, even if it's just sitting near them while you're doing something else. Get them used to your presence. Slowly move your hand towards them, but stop moving the moment they look stressed out, or scared. Keep doing that every day and eventually your patience will be rewarded.
The pinfeathers are new feathers, they grow in that casing until they're ready. A bird can get to pinfeathers pretty much anywhere on their body apart from the head, so usually another bird will help. Pet birds have humans to help them though.
Usually budgies have 2 very large molts twice a year: once when their summer feathers come, and once when their winter plumage comes. It's a glorious mixture of dust, little down feathers floating around everywhere, with pinfeathers galore! But on occasion pinfeathers will pop up randomly to replace old feathers that dropped, so I probably do this once a month or so :) and only when the birds are kind enough to let me.
