People are very very quick to judge...the guy has taken his own serve which he states he hasnt looked at for a long time and fixed it...its not like every coach has to be an amazing player..far from it..im sure he teaches his students fine. He obviously has a passion for the game and of course lots of people think tennis is easy but really have no idea what they are talking about..ive been 25years teaching all levels up to futures..if one of my coaches was this dedicated i would be happy...
Time Value Of Tennis thats bo problem..i just cant stand when people criticize without knowing much about tennis in the 1st place!..keep up the good work chaps!
Good tip. Whether the tip works or not, I can see the before and after serve power, your final serve hit the back fence on the way up, the other didn't even hit the fence.
Great channel guys! What helped me a lot was learning to throw a football. The ball will tell you if you are doing it right or wrong. Oh, you can do a video on it!
thats why you need to practice throwing things when you are a little kid. I was constantly throwing rocks here and there when I was a kid so it came naturaly in tennis, you just couldnt throw anything far enough with your elbow close to the body. Lots of these mistakes come from non-existent childhood activities.
This is a truly deep comment for me, mostly played soccer. i understand ball contact and spins that my legs were trained to do but trying to implement that to my arms (with a racquet) ain't as easy as my head thinks.
Some people just don't understand the meaning of "progress"... He have showed some improvement, not the final result. Think abt it, before bad criticizing...
+Andre Lima TENNIS Entirely correct comment. It is really utterly sad to see people being so quick to criticize and judge. The author of the video demonstrated the serve before, and after, and explained thoroughly what he has done in order to achieve a very noticeable improvement. Clear, concise, giving a fix for (with the method and methodical approach, which is very important) for one of the hardest problems on serve for many players. He has to be appreciated for this video, and for readily acknowledging he is still working on improving this, in his earlier comment here.
Time Value Of Tennis THK U 4 DA VID!!! Free lessons... Who wouldn't possibly appreciate... Take a look on my channel - @SpeakOnTENNIS. I have created some subtitles in ENGLISH for the first videos... C YA FELLA!
yay nay Yes. Open mind... It's FREE LESSONS! Must use the brain to process, understand the purpose and then feel grateful for such content... Hey, take a look on my channel - SPEAK ON TENNIS. I guess for the 1st 3 vids I have generated English subtitles. Soon I make some content in English. Hope u enjoy... Thx for ur feedback.
There is another huge problem with your serve that you seem to miss: You are bending/flexing your elbow during the racket drop which ideally should not bend more than 90 degrees. You are dropping the racket by doing that but in fact the external shoulder rotation with a 90 degree elbow should cause the racket drop. Compare your serve with the other main guy's serve in this channel(sorry can't remember his name) or any other pro player's serve.
Yucel Guldali thanks for your comment! I know about that problem but it’s hard for me to improve it. I suffered a shoulder dislocation a year ago so my shoulder mobility is lower than most people, something that makes harder for me to keep the elbow in that particular angle so my body adjusts that way to avoid the pain. You are right about your observation, that’s a good point.
You just can't please some folks. Get that embedded in your action and it will put pace on but also take the net out of the equation too. Try a tad higher ball toss also. This will give you a little added time to get use to the correction. Nice vid, thanx.
Tossing ball higher doesn't mean u gonna reach it with "full stretching". I guess that every time u say "toss it higher" u need to reinforce that extending your body and arm is elementary otherwise someone can guess that just by tossing higher isolatedely will fix it.
Andre , its merely a time assist. Toss a little or a lot , so you can fit in the new action more easily. You can keep doing what you do of course and we'll all see you after you've caught up !
Spiros Pitsinis thanks for your comment! I would only use his motion to focus on improving the trophy position, but once I improve it I would do the full motion. The problem of his motion is that he doesn’t have much rhythm, so I personally don’t like it but it works for him.
What do you mean by "ads"? Check on the difference on the elbow position compared with the body, in the second one the elbow stays further away and higher.
good video. thanks. I was glad to find that I don't do that with my elbow. haha! … P.S. - omfg I LOVE that color of court. Maaaaan! … I wish we had all kinds of different court color combinations here at our parks. Like, why do they always have to be the same one or two color combos! GAWD!
ray edmondson thanks for your comment! I would definitely recommend you Solynco Hyper G strings, those are my favorites for this racket. In case you decide to try them, I would put a lower tension than the one you put right now since the strings are a little bit stiffer. Hope you like them!
I'm sorry, but your elbow is still dropping below shoulder level on the "proper" serve, though not as much. I will video myself and see how I do it. Thanks for the tip.
transklutz you are totally right, I didn’t do it perfectly yet, I’m still working on the progressions to make it perfect. Even without doing it perfectly, the difference in power was huge. Thanks for your comment!
I think the key is to keep the upper portion of the arm (racket holding arm) in line with the shoulders and throwing arm, and to not move your upper arm closer to your body. It is correct technique if your elbow drops below shoulder level, but you don't want your elbow to drop below the line drawn between your shoulders too much.
its not nearly as bad. before it looked like he was *trying* to tuck his elbow in, like he had been taught somewhere along the line that that was a *step*. Afterwards, the elbow may have come in a little, but it was just natural. or at least more natural. IMHO. … P.S. - is that really what 120 mph looks like?? O_o No offense but that looks more like 100 mph. IDK though. Never used a speed gun on my serve.
It goes below shoulder level for sure, but the correction is that the elbow is now not dropping too far below the line drawn between the shoulders when in the trophy position. That is the key.
The reason your elbow drop is because you're not reaching back with your elbow enough. You should try opening up your chest more, pulling your elbow behind the back. Right now, the starting position of your elbow is in line with the direction of your serve. If you watch top players, they reach further back with their elbow (and that's exactly the same for the smash in badminton).
I completely agree with you, the only problem I have regarding that is that I have a limited shoulder mobility due to an old injury that won't allow me to stretch my shoulder further back without pain, so my body reacts doing that motion, even tho is not right. Thanks for your comment!
That's basic and common in serve ,you did not discover America. Correct also your toss (more to the left ) and grip (more backhand - more rotation). These things happens when working with bad coach, who does not know and see.
He dislocated his shoulder a while back so serving a prob. I'd suggest he did toss the ball to the right more. So as to not jar and annoy his rotata cuff. The "Elbow advice" is right though.
a tennis coach who doesn’t use video to self analyze a problem is a bad one. this explains why your problem you are talking about here is so elementary. someone having that serious elbow drop problem and don’t feel it is helpless anyway. a beginner shouldn’t teach another beginner. i hope you have a real job. tennis don’t need another useless coach. there are too many already.
I would not call "beginner" to someone that played on the highest level of college tennis in Spain, or that taught nationally ranked players. I use video analysis with my students, but I don't have time to use it for myself. I do have a real job, I'm a full time tennis coach with students of all levels that improve immensely with my help. Next time think a little more before you write this kind of uniformed comment, while you are checking my videos I'll keep improving my serve so I'm not a "beginner" anymore ;)
Cor blimey ! You make comments like that , get corrected , and STILL no apology. I bet your both american ? I wonder if Nadal spoke to you , I bet you would'nt comment like that you morons.

Great video. Simple and to the point.
Good tip. Whether the tip works or not, I can see the before and after serve power, your final serve hit the back fence on the way up, the other didn't even hit the fence.
This is a great lesson. Thank you for breaking it down to simple parts.

Excellent!
very good tips!
I should do a serve video. I’m a bit nutty myself when it comes to serving.
So many experts on here

Yes you must slow mo video your serve the action is so fast it can be difficult to see the mechanical problem.
its not about the elbow, its about the head of the racquet, once you know it has to be the furthest possible you will raise your elbow
nice video man!

Whats your opinion about nicolas jarrys serving style. I mean the fact that he is holding the raquet up from the begining
Spiros Pitsinis thanks for your comment! I would only use his motion to focus on improving the trophy position, but once I improve it I would do the full motion. The problem of his motion is that he doesn’t have much rhythm, so I personally don’t like it but it works for him.
To me, pros who do this were taught this since they were young, and haven't changed.
All these people commenting like they coaching the next Federer, lol
Good tip about half serve but no way you are doing 100+ mph serves lol
Its more like 60 to 90 now
I cant see the differences. I cant see after serve because of the ads.
What do you mean by "ads"? Check on the difference on the elbow position compared with the body, in the second one the elbow stays further away and higher.
You have to practice, practice, practice. Rome or a serve change, was'nt built in a day !
