Scorsese’s my guy, always has been since I happened to catch ‘Taxi Driver’ 42 years ago as a young adolescent going through his own period of alienation at the time.
Scorsese’s the rare director in which ALL of his films are winners and reward the viewer in some way or another, but here is my personal cream of the crop:
1. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
3. The Age of Innocence
4. Goodfellas
5. After Hours
6. Mean Streets
7. The King of Comedy
8. New York Stories
9. Silence
10. The Last Temptation of Christ
And for anyone whose puzzled by ‘The Age of Innocence’ cracking my top 3, it’s apparent they’ve never bothered revisiting it AT LEAST a couple more times and then some - it’s an underrated gem and one of Scorsese’s most sublime achievements.
Many films, even great ones, suffer diminishing returns after repeated viewings - but with that one, it’s exactly the opposite.
I've had the novel for Age of Innocence sitting on my bedside bookshelf for about 5 years and I keep telling myself I'm going to crack it open one day. Big fan of the flick.
It is well worth the read, my friend. You’ll see what a masterful (and unpretentious) job Jay Cocks and Marty did in streamlining Edith Wharton’s narrative while also retaining its blood and guts (casting Pfeiffer and Day-Lewis didn’t hurt either).
No love for the departed?
I got love for all his films. And although I don’t consider ‘The Departed’ top tier Scorsese, given his whole body of work, it’s a pulsating firecracker of a movie that I’m pleased won him a much overdue Oscar.
The Age of innocence was such a big
Departure of style for him and it turned out well. Glad to see you omitted Gangs Of New York, overlong and formulaic and The Departed. Let’s see how many famous actors I can put In movie and Kill them off
Because of that podcast we did, James, I have really come to appreciate The Color of Money. It's one of Scorsese's most subtle films, one that has to be seen more than once. And Paul Newman should have won the first of his three Best Actor Oscars for The Hustler.
Nice! Thrilled to hear you're getting into the flick. Still blows my mind that The Verdict didn't win any Oscars at all.
Martin Scorsese is my Yoda. On the corner of Prince and Mulberry St used to be a lunch counter called “Buffas” owned by Scorsese’s fellow alter boy at the original St. Patrick’s in Little Italy.
Taxi Driver remains one of the most definitive films about America. I love how Cybil Shepard’a life in politics parallels the filth in Travis Bickle’s life
It makes me sad just how few landmarks from Taxi Driver are still standing. I've heard that the phone and hallway where he makes that painful phone call to Cybill is one of the few that is more or less intact.
He goes about making films with a great flair for storytelling and unique camera work. Honestly, when you mentioned Hugo, I almost believed you because in a way, it showed how much he loves film and how it has impacted his life. Great list, man. Goodfellas - there can only be one!
I only saw Hugo once but the part that I remember liking was everything to do with the filmmaking of Georges Méliès.
Bit of 'useless' trivia - my late father used to laugh EXACTLY like Martin Scorsese - or Martin laughs EXACTLY like my late father. Same should jig, same actual sounding laugh. Freaks me out in a good way when ever I see Martin laughing x
Time for a side by side comparison on Twitter.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock I think so James! x
My top 10
10. Last Temptation of Christ
9. Casino
8. Wolf of Wallstreet
7. The Departed
6. The Irishman
5. Cape Fear
4. Aviator
3. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
1. Goodfellas
Wonderful list, James. I couldn't agree more with the selection. Although I have to say that I have not yet seen "Life Lessons" and that I have not yet seen enough times "The Color of Money". All of them pure jewels, drama, violence, comedy and always with a first class musical taste. There is nothing more comforting than a director who loves and knows the medium in which he works and who expresses it with as much intelligence and passion as he does in each of his films. This list is life, the life of one of the greatest film directors of all time. Thank you very much for this pleasant time.
Glad you enjoyed it, Mario! And I totally agree. Scorsese is one of those rare directors where every frame of film is imbued with an undying love for cinema as an art form.

3. The Wolf Of Wall Street
4. Raging Bull
5. Taxi Driver

7.) No Direction Home
8.) After Hours
9.) Bringing Out the Dead
10.) The Color of Money
Excellent list. No Direction Home saved me from one of the most soul-crushing hangovers that I've ever experienced. Watched it in one fell swoop.
What I love about your channel is that everytime I watch, I learn.. 💚🇬🇧🌱 love Scorsese but didn't realize color of money was his work? F'in loved that movie, wore out my dad's VHS & made me want to be a great pool player... I'm writing this as I watch & if good fellas isn't number one I disagree...x great work James...
😁Goodfellas #1💚🇬🇧🌱
@@marca5883 Always. Perfect film that I can watch anytime.
Love the retrospective James. Great way to burn some time listening to your reasoned and expert takes on things. Indeed this list may not age well, as despite his age Marty seems very sharp based on the Killers Q+A at Cannes. Many more works to come we can hope!
I would love nothing more than to feel compelled to rewrite my list after seeing Killers of the Flower Moon. I'll be first in line.
Fantastic video! Huge fan of yours and Scorsese’s. Thank you for reminding me of the ones I haven’t seen yet. We will react to them because of you…
Nice! Let me know what you think of any fresh discoveries that you make.
I definitely will, thank you for responding, that made my week. Being a guy from Rockland County I gotta support a fellow New Yorker.
If I can ask, do you write stuff down to say, or is it all off the top of your head. I wonder only cause it would help me.
1. Goodfellas
2. Casino
3. Raging Bull
4. Wolf of Wall Street
5. The Last Waltz
6. Taxi Driver
7. Shutter Island
8. The Departed
9. The Irishman
10. Bringing Out the Dead
Keep up the great work sir!
Much obliged Johnny! My itch to get some Scorsese chatter going got well and thoroughly scratched and I look forward to diving into his latest flick in the Fall. I imagine it will excite a lot of debate amongst his fans.
@geekinwithJamesHancock I too cannot wait for Flower Moon! Looks awesome thus far
Your list is great. I like that you didn't go with all the typical ones
Great list. I somehow haven't seen After Hours. That'll change tonight! Thanks!
Nice! Let me know what you think.
@Geekin' with James Hancock watched it with my wife last night. She called it a fever dream from which she thought he'd awake in the end. I actually thought it'd be more unhinged altho it did remind me of sort of a compilation of my decade of living in center city Philly during my 20s and partying hard while trying to be a white collar young "professional" 😁 And while I've never been able to figure out whether I think Arquette is hot or whether she looks too much like a characture of someone who is hot, I definitely think Fiorentino is smoking hot, so that was a nice surprise.
Great video. Please consider doing the same video for Stanley Kubrick.
I'm building up the courage to do so. He's one of my all time faves and I don't want to drop the ball.
I think a very fair list. Great top 10 video on one of the masters & legends of the industry.
Thanks, Jacob! I could have easily done a top 20 but I wanted to keep it down to the essentials.
1. Raging Bull
2. The Departed
3. Goodfellas
4. Taxi Driver
5. The Aviator
6. Age of Innocence
7. Casino
8. The Wolf of Wall Street
9. The King of Comedy
10. Mean Streets
Excellent list!
Goodfellas is infinitely quotable. Perfect #1 choice.
One of those movies where I lost track of how many times I've seen it a looooong time ago.
Raging Bull all day
Great list. I also see you have Scorsese's biography "Martin" by George R.R. 😅
Little did GRRM has been writing biographies of Marty all this time.
Top 5 Marty for me:
1. Goodfellas
2. Casino/Raging Bull
3. Bringing Out the Dead
4. Taxi Driver
5. The Aviator/GoNY
Honorable mentions: Silence, Hugo and Mean Streets
Solid list! With your honorable mentions and your ties at #3 and #5, might as well flesh this out into an official top 10.
Please do more top 10s!
Thanks, Jack! That is definitely the plan.
You and I should connect. We had many a similar experience(s), ala The Color of Money, in our teens and 20s. I get it... I do. Life is fun, and cinema even more so. Especially, Scorsese's first 25 years.
My top ten:
1) Raging Bull
2) Goodfellas
3) Taxi Driver
4) The Last Temptation of Christ
5) Life Lessons
6) Mean Streets
7) The Last Waltz
8) After Hours
9) Cape Fear
10) The King of Comedy
PS: My dad was Van Morrisson's road manager through the early 70s, and heard stories growing up that would make your hair curl. Likewise, in my film school years, I got to be buddies with the son of Jonathan Taplin, and even featured, specifically, his left ear in my first short film. Mazel Tov, man, Love all your videos.
Thanks, Jesse! I wish I still had some hair left that could be curled but I'm jealous as hell that you've had a front row seat for those stories shared by your dad. Sounds like a youtube video screaming to be made.
The Departed and The Wolf of Wall Street are my top 2
Those are definitely the two from the 21st century that I've seen the greatest number of times.
Might have to re-rank after Killers of the Flower Moon, which looks awesome and is definitely a best picture contender.
I'll be first in line.
I don't know what my Top 10 would be but the top 2 are Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Two of the greatest movies ever made that get to the dark heart of the human condition.
Goodfellas could be easily my favorite movie ever. But I love Color of money so much.
"hey Spider that cast is bigger than your fcking head" 😆
That line is fucking hysterical.
James, you and I are the exact same age, so I completely understand and share your, uhm..."profound feelings" for Rosanna Arquette. But I'd like to nominate her role as Gabrielle in Cronenberg's 'Crash' as her absolute hottest. And don't even get me started about Deborah Kara Unger as Catherine in that movie. And WOW...can't forget to include Holly Hunter as Dr. Remington, as well. Holy crap, that's one hell of a trifecta of gorgeous women! And all in one of the very best 90s movies, too. Yes, I realize that I have some issues I need to work out lol. I swear I'm not a sociopath who get's off on car accidents haha 🤷♂👀😂
Right there with you. I showered some love on it in a recent video: ua-cam.com/video/frFZbjSLj40/v-deo.html
James, I agree with your rankings, I’m watching and mumbling to myself that Goodfellas better be #1. I was not disappointed. Different channels make different lists, but The Copacabana scene is the Best tracking shot of all time.🎉
Agreed. Pure movie watching bliss.
No The Departed which is odd to me
@@geekinwithJamesHancockthanks. In actually got to see it before it hit the big screen, in a slightly ‘abridged’ version. Back then, a friend and neighbor worked at a company that had to do with film processing, in Manhattan. He was prohibited from doing such things but brought home a VCR with a copy that had a ‘placard’ that said ‘opening credits’ and then after ‘closing credit’ and he told a small group of us you MUST see this ‘Scorsese film’ . Needless to to say, had to see it the first week it was released in theaters. I’ve seen it countless times since then☮️🖖
@@kdizzle901 the departed is a movie chock full of famous actors who excessively use words that be bleeped in basic cable and practively everyone dies. Sloppy filmmaking
My Top 5 Scorsese Films :
5. Raging Bull (1980)
4. Casino (1995)
3. The King of Comedy (1983)
2. Taxi Driver (1976)
1. GoodFellas (1990)
I just watched today the doco about Donna Summer - I love music bios. ANY artistic bios. Actually I'll give any doco a try even about car racing or wrestling!
1. Goodfellas
2. The Departed
3. Casino
1 Raging Bull
2 Taxi Driver
3 Silence
4 The Wolf of Wall Street
5 Goodfellas
6 Casino
7 The Last Waltz
8 The Departed
9 The King of Comedy
10 Mean Streets
Excellent list!
Goodfellas and KoC at the top, and a 23-way tie for third place.
One of those rare directors where if I ranked #20-#11 the list would still be pretty damn good.
interesting picks for 10-5, i still need to see a few of his films but scorsese is a top 3 director for me. Casino is actually probably my favorite of his but Goodfellas is close. I'm really not that religious at all but Silence is a fantastic movie too
The King of Comedy so low on the list, but at least you got the good ones above it, except The Last Waltz it doesn't belong imo rrmhrghr. I never saw The Color of Money until recently, was surprised how good it was. Goodfellas #1 is correct.
After Hours is also great. I watched it with my mom recently and afterward I said something about this being the second time I've seen it, and she said "you've seen that before and chose to watch it again!?"
Lol, your mom's response is classic. Mine would probably say the same thing.
The Departed isn’t even in ur honorable mentions?! That’s wild
Seen it many times but because it's so famous I decided to use my honorable mentions to give some shout outs to some of his more obscure work.
On another note...i caught the first couple of episodes of citadel the other day & wow! What a mess! Amazing how they could go so wrong with such a budget? Heads gotta roll for that surely? 💚🇬🇧🌱
I'm embarrassed to admit... I've only seen about 10 of his movies. In recent years I finally checked out Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. I liked Taxi Driver. Raging Bull I was unable to get into. I've tried on a couple of occasions and I get about 30 minutes in before I've had enough. Aviator was another one that caused me to drop out after a period of time (it may be good if I toughed it out). Cape Fear didn't do it for me (I'm probably the only one to say this but some serious overacting on Dinero's part), but it was a while ago when I watched it, but I remember being confused that there was a buzz about it, because it seemed like a much lessor version of others movies I've seen in this realm. I thoroughly enjoyed obviously Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed (this is the one that made me realize just how good of an actor Dicaprio is, he was a great actor before that, that's just when I noticed is all), Shutter Island, Wolf of Wall Street (this is a top 3 of mine in no particular order). The Irishman was better than expected. And that's all I've seen.
Have you seen DiCaprio in Gangs of New York? Which was directed by Scorsese.
@@tonychase9376 - I've only ever watched parts of that movie. It's been among my to watch movies for a while, but I never seem to get around to it. I've heard mixed things about it though.
Good list. Id only put silence on here and the Irishman because it's probably my fav crime movie he's made
Dynamite movie. Caught it at the New York Film Festival with the cast in attendance.
I'll definitely have to go watch taxi driver again, it was a watch once movie for me at the time so may have missed a bunch💚🇬🇧🌱
Well worth revisiting multiple times.
Yep - stopping at 1995 is just fine
I always see his new stuff but it's the old stuff that I watch on repeat.
The character and atmosphere in GONY is goat.
1. Taxi Driver
2. Goodfellas
3. Raging Bull
4. Mean Streets
5. The Last Waltz
6. The Departed
7. Shutter Island
8. The Irishman
No #9 and #10?
The Departed is my favorite film of his
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Casino
Goodfellas
King of Comedy in that order
Love the Top Ten
Marty is a great director
Strangely enough King of Comedy is brilliant
I hated it when I first watched but after long time I decided to rewatch that ending is an absolute banger ( I was pulling for Pupkin at the end with that fantastic ending line )
Color of Money is good until it isn’t I thought Scorsese pulled the rug from under the audience with that anti climax
Goodfellas has that Punk Rock Energy it’s a nuclear bomb that propels forward even ends with the Quick Cut to Sid Viscous My Way 😂😂
P.s.
Wise Guys is actually a bit more funnier than you give it credit for Frank "The Fixer" Acavano) "Let me waste 'em, Mr. Costelo."
(Dan Hedaya) "Do we really hurt them by killing them?"
(Frank Vincent) "It's a good start."
😂😂😂
I need to revisit Wise Guys. When it comes to De Palma I much prefer flicks like Dressed to Kill, Body Double, Carrie, Scarface, etc. but I'm always willing to give his movies a second chance.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock definitely worthy of a second look it’s hilarious
I love Cape Fear and Aviator, they'd make my top 10. Color of Money is one of my least favorites unfortunately..
No worries at all! With a career as vast as Scorsese's, there's room for a wide variety of top 10 lists.
New York, New York is underrated.
while i do think goodfellas is his top movie, for me becuase i grew up in a strict religious household the last temptation of christ just hit differently for me then his other films
I've watched Last Temptation of Christ a few times. I'm thrilled that Scorsese got to make his passion project but apart from the crucifixion scene it doesn't hit me as hard as some of his more visceral films.
On The King of comedy, For us oldies who used to watch Jerry Lewis movies growing up, to see him in this role was very shocking. A stroke of genius in the casting and Jerry did exceptionally well. Also I think Joker 2019 was more a homage to this movie than to Taxi Driver.
Sadly Jerry Lewis doesn't get nearly as much love as he deserves. One of the funniest people that ever walked the earth.
So very true on Jerry Lewis
Gangs of New York, The Departed, Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, and The Irish Man (perhaps Flowers as well, but I have yet to see it) would knock out many on this list for me, clearly James is not a big fan of DiCaprio era Scorsese.
Can you do a top 10 of Michael Bay, the greatest director of all time. Pearl Harbour is the greatest historical movie of all time and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen is the greatest movie of all time. He makes Scorcese look like an amateur
Thank God you didn't list Gangs. 🤮 But No love for Cage BOTDed or Cape Fear. After Hours though masterpiece watching Marty shoot the spotlight 😂.
Casino still my Fave Marty and Bobby D. My first time seeing a BJ scene. Pesci and Stone for the win.
Well Cape Fear was my first Marty flick in the theater although I did not yet know about him by name. But for that, I'll always be sentimental about it. And year that BJ scene in Casino is hysterically funny.
I really wish he didn’t make the departed because it’s just a poor remake of the Chinese film the infernal affairs.
And since he did make the departed he didn’t even make the second movie. Those of us who love the infernal affairs also think the second movie is equally as good as the first. So the fact that Scorsese made the departed but didn’t bother to make a second remake of the infernal affairs 2 is just very disappointing.
Anyways goodfellas is my fav of his movies. Can just watch that movie over and over and not get tired of it.
I caught The Departed before Infernal Affairs so I had a different experience but I totally get the antagonism toward Hollywood remakes of international films. Luckily the Infernal Affairs trilogy has built up quite a fan base over the years.
The Departed? Wolf of Wallstreet?
Those are definitely the two from the 21st century that I've seen the greatest number of times.
1. Gangs of New York
2. The departed
3. Goodfellas
4. Taxi driver
5. Casino
6. Age of innocence
7. Irishman
8. Shutter island
9. Mean streets
10. Raging bull
Good stuff! I've never heard someone say Gangs of New York is their favorite but I'm thrilled to see it has so much staying power.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock I’d be honored to be able to discuss this with you. You should do some sort of a podcast. Either way I dig what you have going on. Great content.
