Every time I see anything about Barry Lyndon, I'm reminded of the movie about Napoleon Kubrick wanted to make, but never came about. One of those masterpieces we will never get to see.
‘Force of Evil’ sounds wonderfully malevolent, I really love, ‘Kiss Me Deadly’. ‘Contempt’ sounds absolutely awesome, and you know how I feel about SSOS and Barry Lyndon. Wait. Now I just want to watch the Scorsese film. Thanks, James. A Personal Journey, here I come!
Great video! I like the way you addressed the fandom thing without getting pulled down into it. Barry Lyndon always feels like a stroll through an amazing gallery to me. Your commentary pushed a few of my "need to see one day" movies to the top of my list.
All that Jazz is the only Musical I have seen SEVERAL times. I watched it in the theatre in 1980 and I was amazed by it. Kiss me deadly is really good. Barry Lyndon should be seen on the screen. Fort Apache and Stagecoach are great.

Interesting , well thought out list, James. All The Jazz was a masterpiece and I don’t use that word loosely. Barry Lyndon somewhat slow but visually stunning with his use of natural lighting. It’s such a shame it took Stanley Kubrick so long to make movies after The Shining , and that he died relatively young. Both The Shining and A Clockwork Orange are in my own top 20 of all time☮️👍🏻
@@geekinwithJamesHancock actually musicals is a genre I don’t care for but I have 7 I like, this is one and another Bob Fosse ‘Cabaret’ is another. West Side story was my number one, despite flaws like the Maria singing voice stand in. I consider Spielberg’s remake unnecessary. If I were half my age, I might fall into the same trap, but hopefully I successfully persuaded some folks to watch 'A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies'.
I think Marty and Thelma cut "Goodfellas" to the same beat as "Barry Lyndon," I will die in that hill.
They both have that classic arc of the rise and fall of an opportunist.
THIS is the first time I hear about 'Force of Evil.' Sounds great, and I'll be including it in my watchlist this Noirvember. Thanks, James!
Nice, Force of Evil will be a perfect addition to any Noirvember lineup

Sad but true. Jack Nicholson could have been great in the role.
When my mom entered the room and I was reading a comic I would toss it out and grab a Playboy. It was easier to explain.
lol, exactly!

Nice! A Personal Journey is well worth watching over and over again.
Fantastic essay/video. Love these top 10 lists & great topic. Well done.
Thanks, Jacob! This was a blast to put together and long overdue.

Very cool! If my rant leads to anyone watching something cool for the first time, then mission accomplished.

There may be a link between my crippling stuttering problem and my excessive consumption of caffeine.

I saw Johnny Guitar recently and I looooooved it. I know you didn't include that but it's a fave of Scorcese's as well.

All That Jazz is just one of a kind. I could watch musicals day and night if they made more movies like it.

The Scarlet Empress is definitely my favorite Sternberg film. So sensual and shameless. Amazing gothic architecture and black comedy.

Have you seen any Satyajit ray films. Martin is big fan of his work.
Glad you said that about Marvel and Kevin Feige. It's like Z or milleniells don't recognize anything before the Matrix
