It's both a good thing and a bad thing, I try to be a little bit more intentional and higher energy these days. I've been teaching kids so long I recognize that it's important to try and keep things moving
Amazing tutorial bro. Was able to pick the strumming and chords from your cover videos but I came here because I’m curious, and your tutorial is absolutely amazing. The way you play it is so badass. Keep it up bro
Great tutorial! ignore the stupid hate because this really helped me. my band is playing this song for the school talent show and I'm playing lead so this was a life saver!
Great tutorial - the best one I saw on UA-cam for this song. (Most of the others don't seem to realize that you need to tune the guitar to a G chord.) Now the next step for me is learning play AND sing it! ;-) I can't seem to get the knack of using the slide on my pinky. I play much better with it on my ring finger .... which is fine, except then I need to do the power chord with my index and middle fingers, which is not ideal, but works well enough.
+Linda_Guitar Playing with the slide on your pinky is definitely harder to learn but, if you can push through its so worth it! I do it for the reason you mentioned and also because you can fret notes BEHIND the slide and totally change the chord from just major to all different kinds of chords. To see what I mean, look up Sonny Landreth and watch how he plays. One last thing - try a smaller diameter slide, it will make it easier to hold on your finger. Cheers! ~ Luke
This was the best tutorial i could find for this song, and i love it. For some reason the 4th note doesn't sound right, though, like it should have been down at the other end of the fret board, have to mess with it when i get home to my guitar
What other bad ass slide songs do you know? Love this tutorial man, this is the only one that actually sounds like the real song! The slide really adds the right feel
I have been searching and searching for this. There are DOZENS of people teaching how to play this song in standard tuning. I mean, it is obviously in open tuning. all these standard tuning tutorials on youtube are way off.
Well... I hate to say it but, I'm not so sure the original isn't in standard tuning 😬. Now as a solo guitar piece, it's WAY better in open G! There's no comparison, especially when playing with a slide. But again, when I listen to the recording or watch live videos of Cage the Elephant, I hear a lot of unexplainable dissonance if he's paying in open G, but it fits if he's in standard. Just playing devil's advocate. But thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it!
I just got myself a slide in for this song. Are you supposed to fret with the slide? or fret with a fretting I’d get and rest the slide of the strings behind that fret?
You fret with the slide You don't use the frets at all. If you use the frets, it will sound the same as if you weren't even using a slide. Many players will set up a guitar with high action (a big gap between the fretboard and the strings) just to make playing slide easier. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Luke Walstead thanks for answering man. To explain, I’m trying to play this song, but fretting with the slide makes it buzzing sound when I press down with the slide.
Luke Walstead I do actually got another question. Do you know how to play back stabbing Betty off this album as well? there’s barely any tabs for it, and for tabs that do exist, it just doesn’t sound right. After bending the two notes, there’s a little four note thing before repeating, and I can’t find a tab where those notes sound accurate. Wondering you knew. Thanks!
Ok, for the buzzing issue: you want to have just enough pressure to not buzz against the slide but not enough to touch the frets. Using heavier gauge strings can help a ton! They won't be pushed into the frets as easily due to the higher tension. Also, if you lay your fingers on the strings behind the slide (in-between where you're fretting with the slide and the nut) you can mute a lot of unpleasant buzzing, overtones and just general nosiness. You'll get a much cleaner and focused sound! It's going to take some work to figure everything out, but if you stick with it you'll master it pretty quickly!
As for Back Stabbing Betty, I don't personally know how to play it but I've also never tried to learn it. Let me take a look this week and see what I can come up with for you. If you want a more direct way to contact me, go through the contract email on my website or message me through my Facebook page. (Links to both in the video description)
You might need to adjust your action so that the strings are farther away from the fretboard. You can also try heavier strings as they will resist being pushed into the frets better than light gauge strings. One or both of those solutions combined with a calm and gentle hand moment (so you get exactly the right pressure) and a little patience will get you the sound you want.
I'm picturing him smashing his slide into his guitar neck with an actual like framing hammer... Because otherwise, how the heck would that happen!???!?
@@LukeWalstead I'm not sure tbh. My best guess is that it was what cracked or structurally compromised somehow and he didn't notice beforehand. He got 4 stitches though lol
+Samuel Gonzalez hahaha nah man, it's only tuned down to a D (both E strings actually) and that's not usually enough to be a issue. I did grab the wrong tuner once and kept tightening it but couldn't tell why it wasn't changing pitch... until my B string snapped and hit my cheek! 😝 Cheers
Oh dude, I cant tell you how many times ive waited to find a legit tutorial of this song. Thanks man
You're welcome, glad I could help.

ive heard do you need a hightened nut to play slider guitar on an acoustic
Not necessarily. I don't use a heightened nut but, they will make things a bit easier in general

Do you really need a slide to play it can you just do it without it ?
Yep! You can't get the sound without it.
I had that same Peavey Musician Amp
Lol, it's my dad's from college
Bro killed his parrot
He was delicious 😁
How big is the slide? I have been wanting to learn how to play this song for a while, great video and tutorial :)
Thank you! It's just the neck of a normal sized wine bottle. I cut it off with a tile saw and some sandpaper to clean up the edges.
LMAO Budgerigar 1. Luke Walstead PWND!
🤣😂😂🤣🤣
When I play this one I tune my big string up to g just a though
Is that the only tuning modification you use?
@@LukeWalstead yes
Interesting... 🤔
Is this not just open G tuning?
It IS open G tuning!
Slide tutorial? I can’t get it to not buzz or fret.

What guitar is that the silver one
That's a Fender FR48 steel Resonator.
+Luke Walstead thanks bud gotta pick one up
man... r u ever afraid of just popping a string while tuning it up after the vid, since u lik tuned ur high E string all the way down to G....
