Your videos kept popping up on my feed, after 2-4 videos you earned a sub, I like your rather subtle personality, and realistic products every person could buy.
Coil splits are a nice touch but I've yet to hear better than like 80% coil split tones that truly capture single coil tone. I do thoroughly enjoy my epiphone les paul standard pro that have splits that can get me that "almost" single coil tone but it's again it's not more than like 65% there

Max, You coulda went with a single-coil sized GFS "Lil Killer" Humbucker for the neck pickup! That would have spared the body "surgery" and still had your HH sound pallet.

Single coil sized humbuckers don't sound the same as a true humbucker. Aside from a vintage strat, I wouldnt use those on a bicycle. And yes, I'm also the authority.

On my Strat, I swapped the single coils for stacked humbuckers. I'd suggest cream or black knobs, as the white knobs are too bright. Push/push for coil splitting is more practical. I have individual tone controls for my two pickups. No need for a middle pickup - they just get in the way. 😎

For about $300 you end up with a very nice guitar that plays and sounds great. I put a pair of the GFS gold foils & wiring kit in a Harley Benton pro-series Tele and it plays and sounds like a guitar costing 3x what I have invested. Great stuff !!

  • @christopherhorton4634

That's a pretty close single coil tone on the neck. Like, really close. So for a little more than 200 bucks, you have a killer guitar that does a little bit of everything! Not bad!

Max another thought, if you didn't want to do the routing, a Dimarzio p90 sized humbucker like a pair of super distortion maybe if you like to shred it in seriously high gain. Just a thought Max, I like your videos, you make any guitar sound really good no matter what the budget of the guitar.

I purposely waited to view this until I had time to really understand all you did in this mod. Thank you for mentioning all you did about the problems with making the modifications to the body to accept the neck humbucker. I was always curious if the output jack came with the Kwik-Plug wiring harness. Since you didn't mention having to solder anything other than the ground wire, the Kwik-Plug system definitely has my attention for a modification I would like to make to my 2018 Player Strat (from SSS to SSH with Push-Pull on the bridge pickup). Great video, as always, and please keep them coming!!!

I love Guitar Fetish pickups. I have an old early 2000's Epiphone Student Les Paul bolt-on that I got used with bad wiring, so I slapped a Dream 180 and Dream 90 in the bridge and neck, respectively, along with a Seymour Duncan Blackouts Preamp, and I have been in love with the tone ever since. I have always been more of an Ibanez/B.C.Rich/Jackson/Fender kinda guy, to the point I've never even owned a 24 & 3/4" scale length guitar. I grew up playing my dad's fat strat and tele, and my first guitar was a GIO RG. Regardless, low to medium output, vintage voiced pickups with an active preamp just sounds monstrous. I threw the same Seymour Duncan preamp in an Ibanez with INF1 and INF2 pickups and now it just sounds like EMG 81/60, lol.

Dude, after saying that you had to route out the neck pickup on the body you were supposed to pull out the sword and say it didn't take long! I liked the pickups especially when playing clean but at one point the neck pickup sounded a little muddy while playing dirty. I think you had to solder the wires to the output jack, am I wrong? PS I would be careful to suggest the Harley Benton neck will fit the GFS body without some adjustments. I don't think either one is the Fender standard. Great video keep experimenting. I bought a set of single coil size hot rails after watching one of your earlier videos. Hope to install them next week using a GFS 3 toggle pickguard instead of the 5 way switch.

And I suspect if my Strat had a humbucker in the bridge I would probably never use the middle pickup at all since I'm not crazy about the neck/middle combo.

I went one better, I fitted a Seymour Duncan Everything Axe loaded pickguard with coil split and the Gilmour mod for the neck. Also fitted a set of Gotoh locking tuners. An absolute TRANSFORMATION!. The guitar is bloody grouse! All up owes me about $600. But the versatility and playability is incredible. Spoiler alert, I had to dremel out the cavity deeper to take the push pull tone pots. Oh, and I shielded with copper tape. Well worth it. Fender can piss off, not gunna pay theirs or Gibsons inflated prices. For LP I have Agiles, that are exceptional.

Coil Split is different than Coil Tap. VAH pups are Coil Tap not Coil Split. So rather than all the copper wraps being used only half are when tapped. In effect lowing the output etc. Coil Split is where the two North and South poles have one disabled making strat single style sound and well as hum etc. How do I know? I just bought two VEH and discovered this when approaching connecting a 5 way Alpha switch. :-)
