Hi everyone! This has been a fun video! This is going to make you question everything but I'm gonna let you in on a little secret... A CAM and B CAM vary from the GH6 and S5ii on each shot. That means on Shots 1-11, A CAM could be the GH6 or the S5ii, same for B CAM for each individual shot. More details in the reveal video on Feb 2!
Ok, another relief. Thanks for clarifying. I felt like I was losing it a bit assuming they stayed the same. Not sure why I thought that’s what you said.
I think the only thing that can make the difference is the S5ii's autofocus.
I was sure of it. Can't wait to see the reveal video, I must buy the S5 II tomorrow !
@@dnbarg same... I was constantly changing my decision watching them, now I realise why. Colour science, softness, auto focus I feel I would get over 50% right, but they're waaaay closer than I expected. I am assuming the softer toner and image are the GH6 being a GH5/S5 user... I think full frame gives it away by being clinically sharp. Could be wrong though, this can also depend heavily on the lens used!
Yeah you could see you'd swapped them out instantly to be fair. I even shouted it out loud haha!
Surprisingly, the samples are much more similar than first thought. Since I own the GH6 and know how it behaves. I say A cam is the S5 II and B cam is the GH6. The highlights and shadows make the difference visible. But I must was it once again, the GH6 really doing great! Also i like the color science of the GH6 better 😊
You pointed out the very important item: color. I didn't have S5 ii. I ever used S5. I don't loke the color. I much more prefer the color of gh5ii. Did anyone has the same feeling with me?

It's really interesting how different VLog resolves on each of them. While both are shooting in V-Log, A Cam is outputting higher contrast and saturation which you can see when the LUT is applied. B cam has less.
Couldn't figure it out until shot 9. The bokeh on A cam showed a shallower depth of field, which hinted full frame, the S5 ii; and B cam is the GH6.
Well that's a little relief for me. Just 3 month ago I've bought a GH6 plus two lenses. Mostly for video. I've never thought there would be a phase-AF in the near future. And then only a few weeks later the S5-II hit the market. Gosh, I was really pissed.
dont worry, i still will choose a gh6 over s5ii because gh6 has better frame rates and more lens choices

I was SURE there will be a phaseAF series coming soon, jus logical from a product management POV.
As the GH6 is out and companies always (mostly) place new technology from top-to-down, I assumed phasAF will come in S series FIRST.
I was not sure if I wanted a S5 more (I really, really want the FF look) but a Q4 2022 S5 w/o PDAF will drop in value soooo low that it is too risky from a finance POV.
S5 in Nov.2022 in GER: 1350€, body only

Switching from Canon to Pana Lumix S5 II and 2 bodies, would you recommend 2x S5 II and also with Sigma 60-600mm for Tele or 1x S5II and 1x GH6 with 100-400mm as Tele and for video and photo?
I can tell that the S5 II because of the full frame has more separation on the image. The gh6 since is mft, has a more compressed image. In the closer shots, I think that the S5 II performed better because of the full frame look. Outside shots were really close. So it don’t bother me to use any of them. If I’m wrong please let me know so I can buy the correct one. Btw, did you tried the S5 II X? It is worth the extra money for the features? Also are S5 II video features better than gh6? Thanks!

I love this. Just goes to show that getting the latest and greatest isn't the be all and end all (says the man who bought the S5II on day of release). Sometimes I thought S5II was B and sometimes A. I think B though.
Both looks very good and similar. All time I thought that A cam is S5 II, but then in low light I thought that A cam is GH6 😄
I use the GH6 and definitely think it was the A cam. Worse low light than the S5II, but better stabilization. I am chomping at the bit for the GH6II with PDAF, after seeing the performance of the S5II. I have a huge collection of M43 lenses and don't want to have to purchase all new glass.
S5II is A, GH6 is B because of the light pulsing during the talking head, and the DOF is shallower for A in the closeup
Hey Caleb, great game! I love it! To me cam A is the S5 and cam b is the GH6. The depth of field helped me to find out ^^
Couldn't really tell the difference - so in the real world would I need the better stab of the GH6 or the phase detect and lowlight of the S52
I think A is S5-II. It looks like you didn't set the aperture of the S5-II exactly 2 stops smaller to get the same DOF and at 4:05 the background is much more blurry. Also the S5-II is told to have the better IBIS when walking and IBIS of cam A looks better in the walking shots.
I bet A for GH6 and B for S5II because of little more saturation in red and less rolling shutter in corridor... But of course, I can be wrong : both are amazing
A is Lumix Gh6 and B is Lumic s5 mark II.
Dude! You are in my town! Wileys, the old courthouse, the Orpheum, the sculptures. Nice to know someone else here shoots m43. Now there are TWO of us.
Cam A is slightly sharper, slightly vibrant colors and slightly more bokeh. I’m going to say it is the S5ii.
But they are so close that’s it’s not a big deal. Without them being side by side either would be good enough.
Both cameras are really close, with is pretty compelling for the GH6. My money is on the A-cam being the S5ii and the B cam is GH6. A cam consistently had a shallower depth of field (which is consistent of full-frame), a little more magentas...which I've seen as a trait of the S5ii from many other video footage, and better IBIS during the walking shots. The autofocus wasn't remarkably different, but that just goes to show how much Panasonic has done with DFD. It's remarkable. The reliability of the PDAF is really the main reason I'm choosing to S5ii over the GH6. Both are phenomenal cameras. I can't wait for the GH7 to hit with PDAF so I can update my MFT body. I have both MFT and L-mount systems, so I truly believe there is benefits to both. Panny-boi for the win!
In film A Cam and B Cam are exactly the same. They don't mix and match.

I agree with your observations.
I believe the A cam is the S5II based on the DOF and the great stabilization.
The smaller the sensor the better the IS
A cam is the GH6, the smaller sensor allows it to have better stabilization.
I'm a GH6 owner but it was very difficult for me to recognize the right camera, I think A cam is a GH6 and B cam is a S5MII
I think the B CAM is the GH6 and the A CAM should be the new S5ii. Am I right?

Both look great, loving my GH6 need some. M43 Lens now.
Shot 5 B is sharp as so I'm assuming S5 coz m43 struggles in the dark alledgely. In practice though I've found mine to be surprisingly very good.
They are very close but the give aways are clear in the outdoor shots and the shots with people in them. That one shot going down the hallway has me beat. The S5ii has more dynamic range, and gh6 has a warmer color cast, so you can tell outdoors. Indoors it’s a bit of a cheat, but physically MFT is half the focal range and zoomed in, so the perspective distortion on people and objects is that of a wider focal length. The ones where the guys head is wider is the GH6, where his head is more narrow and where the objects on the table seem closer together, are the S5ii.

In the very beggining we can see the AF hunting of the Camera B (GH6)coming from your backlight.
Does the gh5 and the s5 ii use the same lenses
some you can tell by bokeh, most you can tell by sharpness and the fact the S5II has a strong Magenta/reddish push especially in skin tones(S5II), also can tell in low light. You could argue the GH6 has the more out of camera cinematic look by looking a lil less digital in not being as sharp or having any particular overly strong color. At least to me.
I think A = S5II. But I tend to prefer many of the images from camera the GH6, camera B! Both great though.
Cam A is Lumix S5II: video has a bit more crisp, colours have a bit more punch, and video A shows a little bit more detail than Video B. I know how close the quality of my GH6 is in comparison with my S1 and S5. Quality-wise the GH6 is certainly not as good as its FF siblings at high ISO but its features are fare more advanced. 🙂
B cam had slight pulsing in the background due to the pdaf, tho it really wasn't that noticable

S5ii is cooler and more magenta, also new algorithm gives S5ii better image stability, as GH6 owner I hope GH6 can get firmware updates to match that.
The only difference i noticed:
(in the low light B is way better = big sensor = s ii).
(in the ibis test A more stable than B = MFT = gh6).
+ i think B is a bit wider than A this confirms that B is ff sensor! 😅
I believe that’s incorrect. Full frame has increased shallow depth of field, which would be camera A.
B cam GH6 unless you deliberately made the S5ii aperture lower? the close-up shot of the face in the cafe gave it away.
Since both cams have the same size Micro 4/3 sensor, shouldn't they both have the same crop factor and, therefore, use the same focal length lens? Why 25mm for the GH6 and 50mm for the GH5? I can tell the image is the same size for both in the footage, but I guess I don't know why.
Never mind. I completely misinterpreted the video: it's S5ii vs. GH6 (full-frame vs. Micro 4/3). I get it now.
No CMOS streaking in 3:58? Clearly that means none of this was recorded with the GH6! /s
The focus pulsing of camera B made it quite obvious which is which though (he says prior to watching the big reveal...)
Edit: Oh, it's not the same order in each shot.... oh well...

Controlled lighting can make any camera look great. Low light is the m43 issue. Film again with zero studio lights and I'll tell you which is S5II
I would like to think "A" is GH6, "B" is S5ii. Mostly because "A" does not do well in low light. I am baffled by the instances where "A" is a bit blurry? However, "A" also has better depth of field, so it should be the S5ii. "B" shows signs of focus hunting typical of the GH6. "A" is also quite a bit sharper than "B". Interesting. (hadn't read your comment until a moment ago) ... since A/B is swapped on different shots, wherever A is sharper and more in focus, presumably that's the S5ii, and all the low light issues etc. are the GH6.
Both the same with A Cam slightly darker and one of the face close shot with portrait blur background while B Cam all clear.
To me A cam has better environment atmosphere with depth feeling
A cam is the GH6, the reds seems to be a bit more intense - like on mine.
I've never used the g6 but here is why I think the s5 is cam B, aliasing it has no low pass filter also washed out colors in bright light and more vibrant in low. Gh6 cam A more detailed from oversampling and full frame usage, colors more saturated much like my G95 was and poor low light. but yes a good match and negligible differences.
Could you do a cinematic test where you color grade the footage

I think A Cam was the GH6 and B Cam S5 II. I think A cam look a little more stable and a little more noisy.
As a gh6 user I think A cam is gh6 because it has more sharper image because of size of mft. Also its worse in low light. I like my gh6 because it is really a power house for use long times but s5ii image is really better in some aspects
It immediately shows up that B cam is GH6. Let me wait till the end :D I thought that way because of the bokeh and not being directly focused on the eye properly. Lets see lets see i'm in the 2nd min now :)
Couldn’t really tell, which says a lot, but not watching on a giant tv. Another creator I watch often compares an inexpensive Sony zVe10 to much more expensive cameras (of various brands, but more often other Sony) and again, you can’t really tell on UA-cam until he hits really low light. Otherwise, I find the APSC often the one I prefer when watching, but both are so close and good enough.
A cam : S5 2, B Cam: Gh6
I will go with Cam A = GH6. Remarkably, both are very good.

I am impressed by the landscapes of youtubers from the northern hemisphere. Here in Brazil it saddens me to buy a GH6 for the price of 3 there, but the beautiful landscapes here make up for this sadness, this white monochrome forced to use a small aperture that did not use the autofocus to the extreme. But cam B is at Gh6.
I feel much better about buying gh6 with 4k 120 fps a month ago

wrong geometry and soft look is GH6.
I think A cam is GH6 and B cam is S5 II. The GH6 is more yellow and green than the S5 II. And we can see the difference in low light : A cam is more noisy than B cam.
Guess I won't be "upgrading" lol. My GH6 is still competing and performing just fine.

S5Ii is brighter , but using a speed booster , gh6 got a S5Ii killer. Haha
I think the Camera A is the S5 mark II. I would say, it looks like my S5: colors are great but not so good as it were on my mft camera, the inclination of the tower is much higher and typical for the kit lens. I can see more details in shadows in the camera B but more information in highlights in the camera A what corresponds with my experience „S5 vs. G9“ .
What surprises me is that the IBIS of S5 mark 2 seems to be superior; I thought the GH6 must be better!..
A and B vary, it is not always the same camera, it's pretty obvious, the colors are different from each shot.
Funny - Lots of comments about sharpness then the “cinematic vloggers” will turn down the sharpness for that “cinematic” look, I’m looking to buy a gh6 coming up from a g85 - I just hope they don’t bring out a new version with better AF but rather a firmware update - I have a lot of MFT glass so going FF is hard but I prefer small compact light gear so the MFT GH6 still makes better sense for my use

0:09 there's the answer. S5ii is on your right so it's A Cam. Also the ibis is much better and you have more bokeh so definitely A Cam is S5ii. If I'm wrong I owe you a pizza next time you come to Spain :D
Interesting.... And the proof that, if you are just entering the filmmaking world, you don't need the last super duper camera. I'd say that Lumix S5ii was on the right. And GH6 on the left... Base on better stabilization in the corridor shot and better quality in low light situation.... But for the wide shot with natural daylight it's the same image. Should I just keep my GH5 and give back the S5ii i just bought ?! (it's a real doubt that I have... not just base on this video.)

I see subtle differences but one is not better than the other on my monitor (4K).

I'm going off balance, you start with S5ii = Cam A and always end up with S5ii Cam A but in the middle, in certain situations against the light, you swapped the cameras. S5 pinker leather and a slight extra micro detail.... maybe I've got it all wrong...😂🤣

This was fun...but literally splitting hairs here.
I should probably be watching this on my 65 inch TV but trying to peep on my phone...so I'm taking a different approach, as a camera person, I'd say cam B performed better. Crisper, cleaner, better skin tones...all marginally but that's just my 2 cents.
Just found this. I'm gonna guess that the GH6 was as follows: 1-B; 2-B; 3-A; 4-A; 5-A; 6-A; 7-A; 8-B; 9-B; 10-B; 11-A. All that said, it was very close and any differences were quite subtle.
OK, I just found your results video. Wow! was I ever wrong. Four out of eleven is a pretty poor showing. I was trying to key on sharpness and DOF. Apparently, I should have been looking for colour. What this tells me is that these cameras are even closer than I thought, and frankly, that a good thing for the smaller and cheaper m43rds model. Cool!

LOL, genius comparison. To anyone considering the s5 cams don’t forget that you’re getting the inferior IPB compression and crippled recording modes compared to the GH6. You can mitigate that with an Atomos but factor in weight, an additional point of failure , and costs. Pick your poison wisely. Panasonic created the ultimate devil’s threesome. 😅 💦
