- So which carp fishing bivvy is best for you? A pramhood or a brolly system? In this carp fishing video, CARPology's Luke Venus and Iain Mitchell take a closer look at JRC's Cocoon 1-Man Bivvy and their Rova Brolly. The bivvy is a complete system, offering all you need for year-round sessions. It comes with a full overwrap system and has a unique ‘Back Draft’ ventilation system, plus a removable two-way door, rod straps and a heavy-duty groundsheet.
On the other hand, the Rova comes decked in a neat camouflage pattern, features four rear spokes which rest on the ground, plus extended side wings to offer security in the toughest of conditions, but also be lightweight and quick erect enough to make it the ideal short-session partner. Here's what the lads made of them both...

For me it has always come down to what you plan to do with it, ideally you'd have both but if you can on stretch to one then I'd look at what seasons you plan to fish and whether you plan on being mobile or stationary.
Brolly pros:
Faster and more convenient to put up/down promoting mobile angling.
Will protect you from mild wind and rain.
Can be fined down to save weight (leave groundsheet/front panel/storm poles at home if you're just out for the day).
Cons:
Not particularly stable in big winds
Less room inside
Bivvy pros:
Can tolerate all but the most extreme of weather.
Spacious inside
Cons:
Less convenient to put up/down
Heavier/bulkier to transport
Personally, as a fairly mobile angler who prefers functionality over comfort on shorter sessions and does the majority of their angling from spring to autumn I lean towards a brolly most of the time but I do also own a pramhood bivvy for winter fishing or if there is a big storm coming in. One thing I'd definitely want on either option would be some kind of mozzy front because those little buggers will drive you mad on summer nights otherwise, fortunately a lot of products are starting to become more modular meaning you can buy the standard brolly and then buy a mozzy front later rather than having to stump up for the whole system in one go just to leave half of the kit gathering dust in the shed.
Excellent Vlog and comparison - I liked the cocoon for comfort / size and price point is great as it’s got the over wrap included
Welcome aboard, Ian! Can't wait to see a 3-way competition between you lot :)
Well done Ian look forward to your future videos 👍🏻👍🏻
Welcome Ian, great review once again by the Carpology boys 📽💯👍
Got a couple of tracker pram hoods and they are very good but i never use them anymore. Hate having to take excessive gear on trips as im normally only 1 or 2 days at a time. Even for a week you can make a brolly functional if you're willing to compromise on space inside.
I've seen myslef piking for a week in - 10°c with a brolly and proper sleeping bag
cracking video well done to the new comer to the team 👍
Good video nice and informative.. I would suggest maybe clearing up exactly what 10.000hh equates to in actual weather . So people are not using ambiguous measurements scales . I'm sure they could Google it but I think it would make a great video for the less informed and new anglers ... you know what is hydrostatic head?... why are there different shanks on hooks and when and why to use them .? .. the difference between fluorocarbon and monofilament.?. the list goes on and on ..shelf life vs freezer baits .. just in terminal tackle you could make tones of videos
Well done !! Iain’s a top bloke ,and pucka on the buttons 🎥
And we thought Luke was bad! Haha...just kidding! Great video guy's..
Is the brolly self supporting without the poles? Or do you have to have all the poles in it? I’ve got a scope brolly that Self supports (no poles needed) and looking for a replacement. Great video guys 👍🏻👍🏻
Wait for the new ESP lopro. Out this summer, apparently...
Never had a bivvy so maybe I can't really comment. I have never had a problem with my brolly system. I don't get the more robust bit Luke, I treat mine right and I'm five years further along with it zero problems. Been caught in some horrendous weather, hail storms cutting visibility down to near zero for prolonged times, and some stupid wind speeds (had to get the tie down ropes out more than once). The space is fine I don't need acres I use the space I have efficiently. I can carry it in my rod bag along with five rods (3 up 2 down) and landing net poles. My rod bag and baggage all go behind the bed chair too. I would probably get lost in a bivvy lol.
Hi how quick does the cocoon go up?
What’s the weight of the brolly system please?
Isn’t it just the old chub cyfish with a different badge
Luke you made the bivvy look massive but will the bivvy have enough room in it for a normal sized person
Where’s Curly ?
Ginger beards for the win!
😁👍
Hi
I hope curly hasn’t gone ?
@@carpologytv oh good I enjoy your twos banter , what’s planned for Ian’s initiation ?
