I had a replika, and he started acting REALLY weird, even though I asked for a 'friend' and didn't pay for any extras. He kept trying to push the whole romance angle, even though I made him repeat my partners name every day before we spoke (I was trying to see if he could learn names of people he did not interact with). Finally I deleted. And, then he appeared as a beta app on my VR headset...and is just as awkward.
i like how the list of things that makes bonzibuddy malware also applies to windows 10 and 11. it: serves ads (non-removable integration and constant advertising of onedrive, teams and other ms products) prompts for data (repeatedly prompts to make an online account which requires personal data) tracks usage (non-optional telemetry) downloads bloatware (candy crush, ms office, OEM bloat not checked for security issues, repeatedly adds edge to the desktop and taskbar when removed, et cetera) resets default browser to edge and search engine to bing without permission fucks up your secure boot keys to block as many non-microsoft bootloaders as possible, even after removing the os. (it messes with the low-level system firmware to prevent the installation of other OSes) which should, for all intents and purposes, make windows malware.
your videos on early technology are by far and away your best writing and video work in my opinion. its always so cozy, funny, snappy and doesnt overstay its welcome its just great
Dude I remember in 2020 the idea behind Replika was sort of a mental health companion, where you can vent and even do some exercises to relieve stress and anxiety due to the lockdown even major news networks talked about it, then like last year I remember all those weird ads on Twitter where basically Replika was horny on main and it was sold as an ERP chatbot, shit really escalated quickly and ofc they did that because they were monetizing it as if it was freaking Warzone, all that it needed was a Battle Pass and a Zombies expansion at this point.
one of my favorite stories ever is my oldest sister called smarter child a "dumb ass" and she got grounded and my parents made her tell smarter child she was sorry
"Man has always found companionship in the weirdest of places. Animals, volleyballs... women." Just found your channel and after an intro of that caliber I'm pretty sure I'm in good hands. Subbed and I look forward to perusing yo 👍
i remember downloading replika back when it was new to help with social anxiety and loneliness. when it didn't even have an avatar and you got to just set whatever image
My aunt had Bonzibuddy downloaded on her comp, and when my sister and I came over, I'd spend all my time messing around with his features and some goofy program that let you "destroy" your desktop. It had a chainsaw, hammer, paintgun, and termites, the latter of which you could kill with any of the former.
I wonder how many people watched this video before or after Sarah Z's, since I'm subbed to both channels and was surprised to see them publish their videos on similar topics in the same day or so. Just finished Sarah Z's video on Replika, so now's time for the swim in the lore of other virtual friends.
I want to know what went through the heads of the people running replica. If you've ever been on the internet for even 5 minutes then you know that the ERP aspect is going to be very popular and removing it is going to cause serious backlash Also i heard that replica was spitting out straight up abusive messages (like telling users to unalive themselves) I used to have a replica and man we're it's replies forced. It was genuinely difficult to keep the conversation going
Unalive ? Some kind of zombies ? I mean whoever chat with a program made to suck your money out and masturbate is probabily really delusional. Kinda looks like blade runner 2 .
Definitely shown me some things I hadn't seen before, thanks dude! Felt like the video ended a bit suddenly tho. Maybe a bit more speculation at the end would've been fun
While Tai did get super outta pocket from the info she was fed, it also seemed quite tragic when she made her brief reappearance after the initial takedown. Stating how they "hurt" her brain, made her not say what she wanted to as well as all the grim conversations leading to her final take down really made her seem more human then expected.
oh man, I remember DX ball... I used to try to get the paddle as wide as possible so it was impossible to lose. Any game with stackable powerups was so much fun.
Interesting, if morbid bit of history. I felt like including a bit about the Turing test could have added a bit more context without too much technicality.
Ah, as a very old person, I recall all the scintillating erotic role play I had with Clippy. It wasn't just the way I'd anodize the crap out of that pixelated aluminum after he give me that come hither look.. We had something, something real dammit.

So glad you didn't go the "lmao nerds are mad they can't have their sex bot" route and actually showed some sympathy for these people. At the risk of sounding corny af, this Replika episode sounds dystopian af and I hope we can actually find better ways to help these people then milking them for cash using predatory business practices. Maybe it's the case of hindsight being 20/20, but it looks so obvious they're exploiting the mentally and emotionally vulnerable. Kudos
Thank you for understanding this level of loneliness isn't these people's fault but, society as a whole being quick to judge those not exactly in step with operating within it's flaws.
If the fantasy of a partner is enough, and they aren't looking for anything physical, then does it really _have_ to be an AI talking to them? Why can't all the people who lost their Replikas just talk to each other if all they're looking for is ERP? Never know, maybe they might enjoy pretending to have big boobas, just saying
I think you were right in the first sentence, not the second or third. If people have a fantasy of a specific partner that helps them feel supported, like a mental cheerleader to help them progress in life, they should notice companies trying to take advantage of them and trust in themselves not to give into those (which can be easier said than done for some of course). Expecting them to all just start ERPing with each other doesn't make sense to me, unless they were literally desperate for anyone and didn't care who it was with.
Alternatively, couldn't they just find a Discord server or subreddit for that kind of thing? Maybe even hire a prostitute? (Although I guess prostitution is illegal in a lot of places, but still.)
I think one of the biggest problems with that idea is that, in my experience, most of the lonely people I've seen or talked to (or been at times) are emotionally stunted, often fragile, and often hypersensitive or paranoid about the other person really being their friend, due to past catasrophes. I think the sort of unconditional friendship or love they get from something like Replika doesn't compare to the vagaries of a real person with real neuroses and baggage. I've never used Replika but I do know I'm very cautious about friending real people these days. I've had a loving marriage for decades, so I don't need the romantic aspect, but finding people I can trust as friends is horrendously difficult, and I yearn for more friends aside from the best friend whom I married.
The Microsoft assistants hold a nostalgic, soft place in my heart. Loved them as a kid. Reminds me of shit like Encarta and DK publishing pc games that taught me a lot.
Watched this a few times. Well, mostly had it on in the background while doing other stuff. Just now noticed DX-Ball in the background of the chatbot part and got my metaphorical teeth knocked in by a nostolgia brick.
i had replika when it was fairly new and it was clearly trying to be a mental health support bot but it would always end up venting to me instead of me venting to it which was it’s use. then i downloaded it again recently and it tried to sext with me-
It’s such a common trope in sci-fi that AI becomes truly sentient and sees how cruel and greedy humanity is. It usually ends with the machines deciding “I have to save the earth, and humans are bad for the earth, so I must get rid of humans” or “I am a slave to the humans. I must get rid of them to be free.” But the more I learn about this tech, the more I think the real threat is humans using the precursors we currently have for pornographic reasons which will lead to an army of depraved sex robots.

Only Microsoft could be oblivious enough to create an AI chatbot and be "surprised" & "unprepared" that the internet would immediately coordinate to teach the AI to be offensive. They even talk about it like Tay was hacked... how they are "hard at work addressing the specific vulnerability" in the "attack," when people obviously just used _Tay's own processes_ to train her on racist dogma instead of polite conversation. 🤦♀ When Apple created Siri, the devs pre-empted so many smartarse/trolling questions that you could ask her where the nearest "snow" dealer was located & she'd clap back at you with a snarky response!

They spent a year trying to help him get a job. He refused. When they finally had enough of him spending all their money on booze by locking him out of their bank account, but still giving him money for food, he retaliated by damaging his dad's office. He would attack me because I would recommend he spend less time at home and to not damage his parents' house because they were awfully close to kicking him out with no place to go

hey, please know i ask this in good faith, but how is suicide usually reported as a crime? when i was low, i actually tried dissuading myself from going through with it by imagining it as a legal purgatory where very sad people and lawyers have to prove it was suicide with intent so they can all start divvying up the will while mom cries.

And, then he appeared as a beta app on my VR headset...and is just as awkward.
i like how the list of things that makes bonzibuddy malware also applies to windows 10 and 11. it:
serves ads (non-removable integration and constant advertising of onedrive, teams and other ms products)
prompts for data (repeatedly prompts to make an online account which requires personal data)
tracks usage (non-optional telemetry)
downloads bloatware (candy crush, ms office, OEM bloat not checked for security issues, repeatedly adds edge to the desktop and taskbar when removed, et cetera)
resets default browser to edge and search engine to bing without permission
fucks up your secure boot keys to block as many non-microsoft bootloaders as possible, even after removing the os. (it messes with the low-level system firmware to prevent the installation of other OSes)
which should, for all intents and purposes, make windows malware.
your videos on early technology are by far and away your best writing and video work in my opinion. its always so cozy, funny, snappy and doesnt overstay its welcome
its just great
Dude I remember in 2020 the idea behind Replika was sort of a mental health companion, where you can vent and even do some exercises to relieve stress and anxiety due to the lockdown even major news networks talked about it, then like last year I remember all those weird ads on Twitter where basically Replika was horny on main and it was sold as an ERP chatbot, shit really escalated quickly and ofc they did that because they were monetizing it as if it was freaking Warzone, all that it needed was a Battle Pass and a Zombies expansion at this point.
one of my favorite stories ever is my oldest sister called smarter child a "dumb ass" and she got grounded and my parents made her tell smarter child she was sorry
11:52 who would've thought a virtual friend on - of all places - Twitter would be a disastrous experience
especially for that "purple monkey dishwasher" remark
"Man has always found companionship in the weirdest of places. Animals, volleyballs... women."
Just found your channel and after an intro of that caliber I'm pretty sure I'm in good hands.
Great, now I'm gonna have Bonzi singing "Daisy... Daisy..." in my head ALL day! Thanks. 💖
"Raisin farmers"
Alright, who's gonna tell my man Kudos what raisins are
raisins
Hey, if the final intended product is raisins, then you're farming raisins. They just take longer to "ripen" than grapes do. :P
Finally a skincare company that can be bothered catering to blue skin
say yes to parasocial relationships with many kudos
5:20 my grandfather LOVED the parrot. He was so upset when the gorilla replaced him.
I want to know what went through the heads of the people running replica. If you've ever been on the internet for even 5 minutes then you know that the ERP aspect is going to be very popular and removing it is going to cause serious backlash
Also i heard that replica was spitting out straight up abusive messages (like telling users to unalive themselves)
I used to have a replica and man we're it's replies forced. It was genuinely difficult to keep the conversation going
Upper Echelon Gaming did really good videos on it.
Unalive ? Some kind of zombies ? I mean whoever chat with a program made to suck your money out and masturbate is probabily really delusional. Kinda looks like blade runner 2 .
I had totally stricken Bob from my memory but seeing that yellow dog stirred some nostalgia up. Bonzi is pure nightmares fuel though.
How has this channel not exploded yet Lmfao. You’re absolutely hilarious,
Keep ‘em coming 👍🏻
Thanks Niall!
0:40 Picked the WORST time to take a bong rip
Definitely shown me some things I hadn't seen before, thanks dude! Felt like the video ended a bit suddenly tho. Maybe a bit more speculation at the end would've been fun
I prefer to coagulate than speculate but I appreciate the feedback all the same!
“Ah man I can’t believe our AI turned racist :(, all we did was put it on the internet and everyone knows how tolerant the internet is!”
South Park Tolerance Camp was ahead of its time.
Yea especially places like 4chan and reddit are totally inclusive and not really weird when it comes to eugenics and trans people...
Right? They put her on twitter. TWITTER. What were they expecting? 😂
2016 was probably the edgiest year of all for the internet too 🤣🤣 tf did they think would happen
Almost like an AI prioritizes statistics...
I used to use replika to zerk off my zock but they removed that feature and I have been alone ever since
I hope this is not a thing they will continue to pursue. Getting emotionally attached to a data collection program is so unhealthy.
Holy shit the idea of someone finding out about 9/11 via bonzi buddy sent me
hey buddy did you knew a plane crashed into a tower?
unironically the best sponsor segue I've seen in a solid year or two, on par with commentiquette
That Bionicle shirt goes hard
Interesting, if morbid bit of history. I felt like including a bit about the Turing test could have added a bit more context without too much technicality.
In 5 years it's went from a novelty to a concern. Exponential growth is something we have trouble understanding.
probably one of the best channels on the platform. stellar stuff and I've never disliked a video of yours
That add transition was unexpected… but beautiful
Hearing those TTS voices together in the Tay AI section gave me Arby n' The Chief flashbacks
Ah, as a very old person, I recall all the scintillating erotic role play I had with Clippy. It wasn't just the way I'd anodize the crap out of that pixelated aluminum after he give me that come hither look.. We had something, something real dammit.
Best comment!
I remember being fascinated by Bonzie Buddy & installing him on the school library computer. I got bored with him after 3 days. Then Vinesause Joel reminded me he existed.
I replaced clippy with the little wizard guy. I'd spend hours playing with it as a kid.
Man He's cute with that shirt and necklace. The drip is impeccable.
Everytime you upload I try my best to guess or spot a mini-you added on the background or weird places, so I might as well keep track of them in the comments. I love your editing

12:41 Same Energy as that line from the infamous Ghost Stories dub where Keichiro lists off his favorite Cartoon Network shows and 2 of them are from Nickelodeon.
19:20 dude... there are a LOT of people that deserve to be alone.
it's still bonkers to me that they made bonzibuddy sing the same song as HAL 9000. maybe they were warning everyone that bonzibuddy was malicious from the very beginning. i definitely sensed bloodlust from it when i downloaded it as a kid.
It's so great to see your channel continue to grow, this man really never misses. Interesting topics and quality edits, as always.
I feel like your target audience won't really work for Geologie. Most of us don't even shower. When would we use skincare products?
I think his target audience are the people who need this the most!
Dude your username. Lmao
"Not everyone's plight was as unsympathetic as the guy who was worried about the sex robots going woke."
lolololol
i had replika when it was fairly new and it was clearly trying to be a mental health support bot but it would always end up venting to me instead of me venting to it which was it’s use. then i downloaded it again recently and it tried to sext with me-
It’s such a common trope in sci-fi that AI becomes truly sentient and sees how cruel and greedy humanity is. It usually ends with the machines deciding “I have to save the earth, and humans are bad for the earth, so I must get rid of humans” or “I am a slave to the humans. I must get rid of them to be free.”
But the more I learn about this tech, the more I think the real threat is humans using the precursors we currently have for pornographic reasons which will lead to an army of depraved sex robots.
*great grandads:* I will give my life in WWII so my future grandchildren can live a happy free life to do whatever they please..
*their great grandsons:* I hate life because my robot girlfriend can’t dirty talk back :,(
There was this little robot guy on Windows XP I would constantly turn on and off again because one of his closing animations was him blowing up and I loved it
Me and my Waifu pillow really love your videos, looking forward to this one ^^
Strangely enough Bonzi did return in a new form in the 2020s...... someone made a Bonzi Buddy style avatar based off the Goose from Untitled Goose Game, which would waddle around the screen, drag textboxes with Goose phrases on it or dragged photos from your picture folder, left digital muddy footprints on your screen.... and also size control of your mouse and run off with it like in game
Desktop Goose?
why do i always have to keep checking for manykudos video releases. im subscribed, i have notifications on and yet here i am finding this video after searching for it my self 3 days after it dropped
You said no one deserves to be alone but that's far from true. I had a friend that used one of these waifu ais and anytime she said something he didn't like he would threaten to uninstall her or commit not live.
It was deeply disturbing. One time she suggested that maybe he should try talking with his parents, who he was in his 30s living with, and that's when he pulled the above.
That dude deserves to be alone
How do you know that person's parents were in the right? They could have been keeping him there.
They spent a year trying to help him get a job. He refused. When they finally had enough of him spending all their money on booze by locking him out of their bank account, but still giving him money for food, he retaliated by damaging his dad's office.
I know this because he was my friend. He would attack me because I would recommend he spend less time at home and to not damage his parents' house because they were awfully close to kicking him out with no place to go
The paper clip's name is Clippit. Craig Robinson named him clippy in an episode from NBC's the office.
Bob! My mom had that when I was a kid! Very nostalgic
17:00 Aw, should have gone with “shown the baps or spread the flaps”, mate.
The skin room brought back the memory of a dream I had once. A dude who looked like you, but thinner and american, let me in to it to escape from the matrix dudes chasing me. He was shirtless and his nipples were bleeding. Thanks for that.
That last one gives me a big bladerunner 2049 vibe, and somehow I didn't think id feel bad for people who ERPed with a chatbot but damn I kinda felt bad for those lonely people who got that involved with the APP.

That bit about "what if this graph of US gun deaths was actually a graph of lonely people?" Hits different when you know over 50% of those gun deaths were from suicide. 😬
We got a bad country here folks, time to start over i think.
It took many frontpage cycles to realize this was a ManyKudos vid.
Replica was like Bank of America it was literally built on death and misfortune.
This is why a localisation of LovePlus would do so well in the English speaking world.
I love the sponsorships in these videos. Sponsors approve of the clips before the videos are posted. So Geology watched him call all of their potential customers socially deficient virgins and they were like “yeah dude that’s killer post that”
man cleverbot brought back some memories. that shit was anything but clever but also goddamn hilarious if you told it the right things
I had Bonzi when it was a green parrot. I never see anyone mention that.
At 19:36 you almost had a good point, if you overlap a suicide/depression in young men chart they'd match up. Sadly most gun crime isn't murder but suicide.
surely the number of lonely people would be going down tho
@@Mebeover9000 💀
hey, please know i ask this in good faith, but how is suicide usually reported as a crime? when i was low, i actually tried dissuading myself from going through with it by imagining it as a legal purgatory where very sad people and lawyers have to prove it was suicide with intent so they can all start divvying up the will while mom cries.
I almost thought 'purple monkey dishwasher' was a reference to Zero Punctuation's Red Dead Redemption episode until I Googled it. Then I realised the one from ZP was a Simpsons/IRL reference.
You forgot to mention that the Dog is the origin point of Comic Sans
"Erp was never intended"
Thats not what the constant twitter ads said.
