Orcas are highly social and intelligent. They can distinguish between a seal and a human as well as different types of fish. In this area the orcas are dying from lack of fish since they rely on salmon and the stocks are seriously depleted. They are critically endangered. What a gift to see this young one up close.
Leaning over the edge and touching the orca would have been a friendly gesture that the orca presumably would understand. It’s too bad that the assumptions were that the orca had bad intentions.
Funny how people people will handle the same problem so differently. 🤔 Where one sees fear another sees excitement, one sees danger another sees adventure ! 😉😎
I love Orcas but in this video...lf were in that boat I would've felt fear and danger. There was nothing exciting about having your boat being pushed by an Orca.
I hate this woman's reactions. You were given a gift. And she reacted in the worst way. "GO AWAY!" "Maybe we should start the boat!" 💔 Stay out of the water.
I think Orca are intelligent enough to be able to recognize the undercarraiges of boats and can tell which ones go fast according to the size. This one possibly recognized the type of motor and remembered, 'oh yeah these are the ones that make big fun wakes when they go fast!' I think s/he was pushing the boat saying, 'come on let's play chase and jump in the waves!' Honestly, if they wanted to overturn it, there would have been 4-5 more whales working in tandem just like they do with seals on icebergs and you would've been overturned immediately. This was purely friendly...albeit, terrifying for us tiny humans! Orcas don't hunt humans.
@@saltyfloridaman7163 If national geographic successfully decodes their language, the implications would be interesting. Orcas could finally be taught salmon husbandry. Followed by an Orca embassy in DC.

That orca was not aggressive. It was being as gentle as it cld. It was looking for attention...to interact and play. Scary cause you dont know what a wild animal is thinking but look at it's behavior. Shame these lucky individuals let this chance pass them by. Though i understand why they were reluctant. Now i wouldnt get in the water with it but i def wld have tried to interact with it in some way. These people were really lucky for this experience.
Maybe the Orca was just bored and looking for a new friend to play with and have fun in the water without any danger to anybody, even if they jumped into the water to swim next to it.

I would talk to it too. Lol talking to an intelligent creature isn't really that crazy. Humans talk to all sorts of animals smart or dumb doesn't matter.
To come to think of it the Orca is probably smarter than she is. That's why he was pushing her away. They are very, very intelligent. He/she was probably on a mission and all that talking the woman was doing was scaring his/her meal away! 😅😆😆
I would fight every cell in my body to not touch it. Mostly because I'd hate for it to get used to humans and boats although the boat part is nearly impossible to do at this point
