Yeah, a couple of other people have made similar comments. I think when you look at the novels, it appears that all the actual mining is done with small surface craft, and Red Dwarf is just for transporting (and possibly processing) the ore that's mined. When Lister needed fuel for the Nova 5 in the novel he did it all with surface craft.
One thing that I loved growing up watching this show was the red dwarf itself. An intriguing design of ship! Only in recent years discovering the purpose of the ramscoop! Love these videos about the small rouge one herself, please keep them coming😁
Holly confirms it in one of the Remastered shoot distress calls. "Red Dwarf is powered by a giant ramscoop that sucks in the currents of the space and converts them into fuel. Obviously, it couldn't be Petroleum powered, otherwise we'd have to convert one of the cargo bays to store all the novelty glasses we've collected."
You know, I had a feeling somewhere in the back of my mind that one of the Remastered shows said somthing about it. Very well done for remembering where it came from! I'm impressed! 👍
I knew it was a Ramscoop designed to collect Hydrogen for fusion, having seen numerous speculative designes of this type as a kid. It was a common design back in the day. Now we have all these designs based on Alcubierre's ideas about warp drive it's somewhat unfashionable as a concept.
I always had a rough idea what it was when the series started as I had a space book as a kid with pictures of possible hydrogen fueled ships. The ships looked more like 2001's Discovery One with a scoop.
So it's essentially the same as the Bussard collectors on the Enterprise. Given its position, I would have thought it would be more equivalent to the deflector dish if we are making Star Trek comparisons. I always assumed it was some kind of forward-looking radio telescope.
Yeah, that's a fair comparison, although the deflector dish in star trek only really matters above light speed, which Red Dwarf wasn't really designed to exceed! Although, given that there's a huge asteroid stuck in the hull, it looks like Red Dwarf could so with some sort of deflector or shielding! :-)
Diring my space geek era as a teen in the 70s i trawled through books with real and imagined spaceships. I definitely remember that a library book had some drawings of a ship based on this idea. I had experimented with stop motion filming, and even dreamed about making a science fiction film based on the idea with my Super 8mm camera, and tried to make a model out of clay. I didn't exactly succeed.
With how big the Dwarfers describe it, having months long hiking vacations through pipelines and stuff im sure those poles on the scoop are considerably bigger than half a mile
@@RedDwarfNerd By the way, is there any indication of it being an actual mining ship, like heavy equipment or something like it? I can't remember the show making any real use of that "mining ship" classification. And thanks for your videos, it is always great to discover new stuff about Red Dwarf or just to hear about it ;)
It's really cool to get some details about how the ship functions, I find it funny that 'comedy sci-fi' Red Dwarf is in some areas more science based then 'serious sci-fi' often is! :-)
Very cool! I had guessed it was a magnetic ramscoop, but I based my guess on the very shaky idea that the "Jupiter Mining Corporation" literally mined Jupiter. Jupiter has no solid ground, so how do you mine stuff from it? Well, one idea is to scoop up hydrogen and helium from its very thin upper atmosphere, while remaining at orbital speeds. You need to be careful not to go too low, or drag will pull you into Jupiter. But if you're too high, the hydrogen will be too thin to gather. Mining Jupiter like this isn't actually a good idea - you'd sooner mine Uranus or Neptune since the gathered gas mix is identical and there's less of a gravity well to fight. But it's not like Red Dwarf is hard science fiction or anything, so who cares about that?
Well, Dave was in Stasis for over 3 million years. I think that the Red Dwarf itself would have been quite old prior to the radiation leak. The lore on the Wiki suggests it was one of the oldest Jupiter Mining Vessels before it had the accident so it was likely to be 200 - 300 years old. The "Diesel Decks" suggest it has some really antiquated technology aboard.
As a kid I always assumed it was for ‘scooping’ up asteroids to mine.

I will do, I have another ready and more ideas for quick vids in the works!

It's funny how Sci Fi can reflect fashionable real life Science ideas!
It was me who asked that question during the Quarantine Commentaries. 😃
Ah brilliant! I'm so glad that Rob and Co were answering these kind of questions, it really helps answer some longstanding little niggles! :-)
Love these quick fact videos!
Ah cheers, got a couple more in the works right now.

It's a really cool how much accurate science is in this fun sci fi comedy!!!
This ship terrified me , how it would take months to walk between sectors
It's fascinating to think about the insane size of that thing!
Never knew this,, great vid 🙂
Cheers lamby, really appreciate that fella! 👍👍👍

@@RedDwarfNerd Actually the deflectors are for high sublight, at warp the very nature of the warp field moves most hazards out of the way.

I agree, to me they look about one quarter the main ships length, making them about 1.5 - 2 miles long!
Red Dwarf is the best ship ever!
Totally agree... although starbug is pretty darn cool too! 😊
Always thought it was a device to "grab" or "hold" rocks before grinding, given it is supposedly a mining ship. Nice to know ^^
Yeah it does have a kind of giant crane kinda vibe, rock grabber would make alot of sense!

@@wonderkik In the book Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers Lister used mining equipment to collect ore for a drive they find on the Nova 5.
@@TC-th1ey "In the book" explains why nobody ever heard of it ;)

When ever I designe a starship I always include a ramscoop like red dwarf
That's a good choice! 👍👍👍

Shame die-cast models of this aren't as easy to come across as ones of the Enterprise!
Yeah, Red Dwarf really needs some decent merch! There are some unofficial 3d prints available, which do look amazing!
We need another season number 14 please
yeah, or a few more specials! 😊
Agreed, we just need some more Dwarf
Yeah, no worries. I'll just get the gang together for you and go make it now for you!

the scoop is for Ice Cream! :P
