bears aren't that bad. if you know where they are you can cut down a bigger tree, agro the bear and then climb up the fallen tree. If you are up high the bear can't hit you. Bears drop large hides and also the tier two large hides.
I made the mistake of trying that while standing on a large rock formation, turns out bears can climb rocks really fast. I'll have to try the tree approach.

Cutting down large trees and standing on the fallen tree work. Standing on top of impure iron or tin deposits work. I take out gray and brown bears on tin deposits.
