If you want to be a close up magician then the most important thing to learn is how to approach a group of people. Whether you are performing table magic, mix and mingle magic or banquet approaching the group you wish to perform for is very important.
A lot of magicians think that the most important thing is the opening trick. While your opening trick is important it is even more important to win the audience over before you even start performing. If you do not make a good impression the best trick in the world won't make any difference - people won't be interested. After all, you only have one chance to make a first impression.
In this video Craig talks about how to approach a group at a gig. He gives clear advice and guidance on how to approach a group. He talks about what to say, why it's important and different approaches that might work for you.
If you are planning on performing close up magic professionally then this is a video that you need to watch. It really will help more than any trick you could learn. Thanks for watching and let us know what you think.

I think the biggest thing preventing me from changing from an enthusiastic hobbyist to a performer is the anxiety over making that approach to an audience. This video was, for me personally, one of the most informative and useful ones on MagicTV yet, so thanks Craig. This is one I'll definitely be watching multiple times to fully digest and take in.

Amazing stuff, as always! This is one of the key skills any magician must learn! Here in Sweden, walkaround magic amongst tables is very rare (in 20+ years of doing magic I've had three gigs like that in total), but the skill is equally valuable in ANY situation where you are not on stage but have to approcah a group spontaneously.
Thank you so much for your insight!

Excellent video Craig which I’ll watch again! Some of the best advice you’ve ever given. I find it hard to approach strangers; but after the 1st trick I’m always cool..! 👍🎩

Absolutley amazing advice I must admit I have been guilty of only performing for 2-3 peopel on a table of ten in the past. Totally agree with the book How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie. Such a good book and helps in all walks of life not just in magic. Just a suggestion maybe you could put out a video for best non magic books for magicians If not done so already.

Hey Craig, cool video and I‘m burning to watch the second part. I think that will become the best video on „The Approach“ on UA-cam. Even though J.S. Magic has some good videos on the approach too. Can‘t wait for yours

Thanks Craig for this. The timing of this video is perfect for me as I am just going through the process of trying to improve my approach to spectators. I’d only done a small handful of gigs before Covid struck but now I’m getting a few bookings and am getting quite anxious about performing again especially the approach. This wonderful video has given me much food for thought and I can honestly say I feel quite a bit more confident now. Obviously I’ll style my approach to for my character but you’ve certainly help steer me in the right direction I think. Thanks again Craig 😊👍

Hey Craig Thanks for the important information here,as well as performance and tutorial vids. What type of coin routines would you consider performing at a restaurant job. Also,if performing at a restaurant table, performing one handful of tricks, what is a good percentage mix between cards, coins, and another item(rings, etc)?

Sean Heydon goes up to a group saying "has anyone seen my hairy balls?" and hen he pulls out sponge balls covered in hair. Is that funny in Britain?

Craig, love your work and never forgot the friendly advice you once gave me BUT l have a little problem, l literally go to pieces in any small group each and every time. Its ridiculous and makes no sense. I tried all the usual things- practices, visualisation etc shame really as l really love the whole art and look on in great envy even when I see a casual pub performance. Thanks 😊( Quantum is loved in Thailand by my magic friends- work of pure genius)

I think this is interresting to show people some magic, before even they know you re a magician, this case they see real magic, as they don t even know they are fooled.

When you say "I'm not as dodgy as I look", they are probably thinking you are a panhandler. They must then be relieved to find out that you are a magician. Brilliant, just don't start out with three card monte.

You say "I'm not just some weirdo off the street..." But what if you are?? 😂 What if you are trying to approach groups to practice your tricks and you aren't getting paid, or even approaching random strangers on the street or in stores David Blaine style?

I think I saw this on a Chris Ramsay video, he suggested telling them your nephew or something loves magic and you promised him you would do magic at his birthday party can you show them to practice, they're going to say yes because they want to help you out.
