Was looking whether there's other happy audiologists here 😂 Its my favourite when people come back with a big smile telling me they can hear birds or something they haven't heard in years.
I used to suffer from a mild form of hear loss and tinitus, so this gave me a bit hope and lots of feelings of happiness for Jess! Trust me, it is so weird and sad to be in a position of a person who out of nowhere stops hearing normal sound while some are super loud and makes you crazy..... I was scared, had to stay in the hopital for 12 days... I had doctors telling me that if there is no change in 6 days, I am doomed. I feel so happy to be able to hear sounds now as I used to! I had very little support. I have a huge respect for doctors, for all people loosing hearing or sight. It is truely scary and for them necessary to have people who support them more than anything else in the whole world. Thank you for your work! It is higly appreciated ❤️😊
This reminds me of my daughter when she got her first pair of glasses @ 5 yrs old. She was amazed at the details in the trees and the bark and all if that.
A colleague got new hearing aids recently and it made her realise just how bad her hearing loss had got. She came out of the office once (I was on reception) and asked what the people in the next room were going with the door. They had just opened and closed it normally but it was so much louder than she was used to she thought they had slammed it.
I'm not a regular viewer: but I wonder, why she didn't get hearing aids sooner? Doesn't insurance cover them in the UK? I'm not meaning to be disrespectful.
@Jules Herbert Also the Rubik's cube (made entirely of plastic) makes "a wooden sound", but somehow she hears that there is an unmoving part in the middle?? I only know that because I took one apart once.
Definitely. To me it just sounds like a Plastic-y shuffling noise, but because I'm hearing and am familiar with that sound, I'd probably recognise it. Jessica doesn't have that experience.
11:48 It's so interesting to me how when she's trying to figure out what some of the sounds are, she's making movements with her hands that are almost identical to the ones Claudia is making. It's like she remembers the motions that accompany the sounds before she remembers what they are and doing the movements helps her make the connection? Man, brains are so cool!
This has the same energy as kids getting glasses for the first time and realizing that trees have individual leaves and I love it! (Speaking as a member of the four eyed crew 🤓)
lmao i remember when i first got my glasses, the thing that struck me most was a clock in the shop that had accents in a dull yellow and blurry edges i thought were probably rounded but once i put my glasses on it turned golden with sharp edges i couldn't stop looking at it from over the glasses and then through them to compare and spot the differences. i wasn't a fan of the headache i caught within the rest of the day tho :|
"Is there anything else I'm forgetting that I'm stressed about?" - This pretty much sums the year up, I think! Looking forward to your Vlogmas videos and kudos on the intro, so festive!
I started a 2020 journal (just me writing down everything happening) several months ago and I didn’t even make it all the way through March before lowkey giving up
I am recovering some functionality after seven years of being severely disabled and I gotta say, HARD RELATE on the novelty factor of such little things that healthy people take for granted! You are perfect even without your hearing but I am excited that you get to experience new sounds, especially those of Christmas.
Can we talk about how Jessica is better at describing sounds than most hearing people? Like there is no way I would be able to describe the sound a Rubick’s cube makes to someone who has never heard it before.
Having grown up with 60% hearing loss and regaining a lot of it after an operation as a child and going through a similar experience again when getting hearing aids as an adult, I can say that when you get a sudden step up in hearing ability you actively hear more than 'normal' hearing people for a while until you adjust. This is because your brain needs to learn from all the new sound it can now hear, which sounds are 'normal background' that don't need to be noticed too much. Before that happens it triggers all new sounds as 'high alert full attention hear this' processing. I actually was told by the Dr to not wear my hearing aids in louder setting like by a road until my brain had re-trained some background noise out so I didn't get overwhelmed and scared. I also understand Jess's terror at the slightly louder sounds. I was terrified to flush the loo for months after the operation as a child because of how loud and scary it sounded. I would literally run to the other end of the house to make the sound as quiet as possible! Congratulations Jess on your new hearing abilities, it is so magical to hear new things xx
@@growley333 me and my mum were talking about this the other day. When she first got her hearing aids fitted she could hear people talking across the room as if they were talking right behind her

Americans almost never associate a body problem with stress and go right to, "If I am having a strange bodily issue I must be very ill or dying", but then again, medical bills are a thing in the US, so nothing gets done in a lot of cases anyway, so you just anticipate dropping dead or adding to your massively crushing debt you probably have by that point. These new hearing aids are amazing. It's almost like you're not deaf anymore with them functioning properly.
@Hellena Rose I see your point, but in my experience it's usually insurance trying to wiggle out of having to pay the doctors more than it is the doctors refusing to take it. They just want to get paid, they don't actually care whether the money came from you or the insurance company. As for the anxiety inhaler, do you happen to remember what the medicine it had was? There are actually a few inhalant medications that have been shown to be effective at treating anxiety, so it was most likely one of those.
In my case it depends on the problem. If it correlates exactly with my stress level, I assume it's just stress. If it persists even when I'm less stressed, that's when I generally assume there's some underlying problem. Like my irritable bowel syndrome, which my primary doctor insisted was just stress, and would go away in six months or less, every time I brought it up for the two years that it went untreated! :D Then I got fed up with asking her about it and made appointments with several specialists without a recommendation from from my primary care doctor (which meant insurance wouldn't cover it) to find out why the left side of my lower abdomen was swollen and distended with pain in the swollen area off and on. Now I have some medications that seem to be helping some, but I'm still not sure if that's actually my only problem... Is this related to stress - probably! But even if you know something's caused or worsened by stress, after a certain point and a certain level of pain, you should still seek help. And if something really freaky happens out the blue, go see a doctor, obviously. Examples of really freaky: a large lump that doesn't go away (possibly cancer - happened to my mom,) severe abdominal pain after being struck in the stomach by a rogue basketball, followed by nausea that doesn't go away (turned out to be appendicitis - happened to me,) difficulty breathing after being stuck in the chest by another rogue basketball (turned out to be a cracked sternum - also happened to me,) sudden loss of sensation in limbs despite being able to move them, accompanied by aching joints, nausea, chills, and abdominal pain (no one figured out what that one was, but they gave me pain killers at the hospital, did some bloodwork, and monitored my vitals, until I started to recover after about six hours, so they just told me to come back if it happened again)
I'm so impressed with the way Jessica describes sounds, it's so interesting. I never have to think about how a tin can, tinsel or tape sound, I just hear and think, oh, it's *that* thing, inmedietely. Loving the video!
Honestly the fact that we are merely able to celebrate Christmas this year is incredible. That you are even able to do 12 days of vlogmas is above and beyond. I am personally just thankful
I’m so excited for your new hearing aids! I remember when I finally got glasses as a child (I was veryyyy near sighted and we didn’t realize until I bombed a vision test at school haha) discovering all these new colors in the trees and other far away things that I couldn’t see before. It was a really magical experience so I can only imagine how exciting this is for you! Also looking forward to whatever videos you’re able to post this month 🥰 please do not put yourself under too much pressure to release them, we know how rough this year has been
I’ve followed your channel for several years, watching you deal with the impact of severe hearing loss, all with a cheery outlook. What a wonderful gift these soooper doooper hearing aids are to yourself, and even to your fans - i am tearing up here with joy, seeing you hearing the world again. You made my day!!!!!!!
I feel a bit emotional just knowing that Jessica can hear more things! She can hear her wife, and a candle and I'm just so gosh darn happy! Merry Christmas!
You know how we know these hearing aids are good? She's so, so much louder than usual 😅 It means she can actually hear own voice better than she could before and her brain's loving it.
When we were watching your old videos I left the Vlogmas videos for December. So we are watching this years Vlogmas but also Vlogmas of holiday's past. Take care of yourself this Holiday season! We all could use a lovely break this holiday season.
So thankful for Jessica right now. My anxiety was so bad this evening, and just seeing Jessica and Claudia being their wholesome selves put a smile on my face and literally made me physically calm down from my anxious mood. Thanks so much Jessica ❣
This made me feel very happy for you while crying at the same time for my sister. She was born profoundly deaf, with just a little sound perception in one ear. She grew up wearing hearing aids but none as advanced as yours. She’s been gone for six years now…how joyous an aid like yours would have been for her. Congratulations, Jess.
as someone who's part deaf, this made me feel whole.. the way Jessica describes sounds is amazing, looking forward to the rest of vlogmas. also look at Claudia rocking that paper crown!
This was a lot of fun! My bunny was hanging out on my desk while I was watching and he also found some of those sounds very startling. He gave me quite a cranky look.
I used to suffer from tinitus and mild hesr loss. I feel so happy for Jess that she got this hearing aid!!! I remember being so desperate thinking nothing and nobody can help me. Also seeing this lovely couple loving and supporting each other is heart-warming and it is giving me hope... I am hetero but still, love is love! ☺️❤️❤️❤️ I am looking forfard to see their baby this year!!!!! Lots of love to you ladies and all of you here ❤️😚😊
My dad was late 30s when he first got hearing aids after a lifetime of being hard of hearing and losing even more hearing after an accident nearly ten years before. He asked me once what that noise was, so I showed him there was a plane in the sky. He couldn't believe that it was noise pollution-he thought I was pulling his leg! It's really cool to get to see someone experience these things for the first time (or even the first time in a long time)
Those are amazing hearing aids! Being able to discern dimension like the fact that you can tell the tinsel was open to the air rather than contained and hearing such soft sounds like a candle...that's amazing!
I am truly blown away by how much Jessica can hear!! She couldn't understand people without lipreading before and now she can hear Claudia with a blindfold on! I'm so incredibly glad you were able to get these hearing aids and I hope you continue to discover more wonderful sounds! Lots of love! xxx
This is the year I've finally accepted I'm disabled! My conditions have slowly gotten worse until I can't hide it anymore. I've also gotten an assistance dog this year so learning to be visible in public. Embracing the disabled identity and community, mostly online as remote island living is difficult when you're different.
Good for you! My dad is "blind" (most aren't 100% blind) and he's been making me pick up the slack for decades...kind of annoying, like when someone asks you to translate everything someone else says
Jess, you did SO WELL with your guessing! Great job! During the Korean War, my Dad was in the U. S. Army, sitting in a tank in Germany (out of the warzone at the time but things were still not the best in Germany). Tanks are LOUD today but things were so much worse in the 1950's just from the perspective of poor to no protection. Just running the engine at idle was bad. It was a Diesel engine that took a V-8 Gasoline engine in order to START the Diesel! To save weight on the tank, nice things such as mufflers were dropped. LOUD! Anyway, Dad eventually needed hearing aids. With the really bad relationship between the United States Military and the Veterans (who were no longer active) alongside a powerless Veterans Administration, Dad did not get the help he needed for decades. When he FINALLY got Hearing Aids for the first time, he was doing something else with his life which required him to carry a pistol. So, one difficult and stressful day shortly after he got his first pair of hearing aids, he walked into his apartment and was trying to wind down. He heard something behind him, spun around quickly at the same time as he drew his pistol (he thought there was an intruder, which could easily have happened because of his line of work at the time). He did not pull the trigger but he very nearly shot his brand-new refrigerator because he had never heard it click on before. I laughed a good long time after he told me that story. But it does bring things into perspective for many people. There are so many things that so many of us take for granted... I have always had TERRIBLE vision and it only gets worse as I age (along with everything else about me). There was ONE time in my life when I was able to see something that my big brother could not see. There was a high haze on a day in the autumn and a jet was flying overhead. With the light conditions and the haze, everybody could hear the jet just fine but nobody could see it because it was so high up. I had just received a new pair of glasses which had magnets attached, for a special set of sunglasses that could attach to the magnets; the sunglasses were polarized. That is how I was the only person in the yard that day who could actually see that jet. I pointed directly at it to show where it was but nobody else could, they thought I was joking. Luv ya! Can't wait to see more! Merry Christmas to you both!
I'm just over here all happy for her being able to hear more sounds now. And quite impressed at her accurate guesses and descriptions of the sounds. Reminds me of how certain common items or not so common ones are used to create sound effects for movies. I just learned that stereotypical dolphin sound from Flipper and many cartoons and such is actually the laugh of a kookaburra but played sped up.
Discovering new sounds is so exciting! I remember when I first got my cochlear implant how happy I was to have sound sometimes actually hurt. It may seem weird, but that was a real sign that the implant was working. it was great discovering all of the nuances of sounds that I had heard before. Birds, music etc had far more complexity than I heard before.
My mom has always had a hearing impairment. When she was young she got hearing aids, but back then the tech was very basic and didn't really help with the type of deafness that she had. They were so uncomfortable that she refused to wear them, and learned to read lips to compensate for her hearing impairment. Fast forward 45 years and she started losing her eyesight, and we finally convinced her to give hearing aids another chance. After picking up her hearing aids, my cousin and I took her out for lunch on the way home. She excused herself to use the facilities while we waited to be seated, and came out just as they started to lead us to a table. In what she though was a whisper (more like a stage whisper) she said with incredulity, "Did you know it makes noise when you pee?!" We were passing two tables of diners who had the misfortune to hear this mid-meal. One lovely lady had just taken a sip of wine, which she unceremoniously spewed across the table at her unfortunate dining companion, the other table tried to pretend they hadn't heard, but the looks on their faces said it all. I will never stop sharing this story. :D
You'd love the heck out of music school. You get credit for basically doing just that...with a piano or voice and such. Then several years spent on "why..." music is what it is.

@Hellena Rose because not proven and American health care insurance is a joke in general
YAY!! Vlogmas with the Kellgren-Fozards is finally here!
I am personally just thankful
the way Jessica visualises sounds so well despite being deaf is fascinating to me. I love it
The joy in Jessica’s face as she can hear new things is amazing!!!
God, 2020 has been the worst. I'm glad I found you guys. It's nice to spend 20 minutes with you two not feeling the suck.
Also looking forward to whatever videos you’re able to post this month 🥰 please do not put yourself under too much pressure to release them, we know how rough this year has been
Does this mean we all know now what's that family matter? Haha.. Congratulations!!!!
Whether it’s 12 or 2 or 24 videos, I’m just happy to spend some time with you. Happy Vlogmas everybody!
And you! :)
Vlogmas is here! Sidenote: could you do a tutorial on your hairstyle for this video? It’s so pretty!
I need to see Jess reacting to ASMR videos with these new hearing aids!
I feel a bit emotional just knowing that Jessica can hear more things! She can hear her wife, and a candle and I'm just so gosh darn happy! Merry Christmas!
Really hope the private thing resolves in an okay way! Sending lots of love to both of you.
idk if u saw but her wife is pregnant
👶
The 'Aww i love you too baby' just made me squeal. You two are relationship goals!
Oh, poor Jessica when the match was struck! I loved how you described the tinsel and the Rubik’s cube. This video was wonderful!
I’m here after the baby video! Congratulations to you both!
You know how we know these hearing aids are good? She's so, so much louder than usual 😅 It means she can actually hear own voice better than she could before and her brain's loving it.
Coming back to this after the pregnancy announcement is interesting. I thought originally they were talking about an adoption journey
When we were watching your old videos I left the Vlogmas videos for December. So we are watching this years Vlogmas but also Vlogmas of holiday's past. Take care of yourself this Holiday season! We all could use a lovely break this holiday season.
this is the cutest flipping thing I've ever seen. Y'all are simply too much.
So thankful for Jessica right now. My anxiety was so bad this evening, and just seeing Jessica and Claudia being their wholesome selves put a smile on my face and literally made me physically calm down from my anxious mood. Thanks so much Jessica ❣
This is the most wholesome
I'm also so excited she'll hear their baby😭💖
This made me feel very happy for you while crying at the same time for my sister. She was born profoundly deaf, with just a little sound perception in one ear. She grew up wearing hearing aids but none as advanced as yours. She’s been gone for six years now…how joyous an aid like yours would have been for her. Congratulations, Jess.
as someone who's part deaf, this made me feel whole.. the way Jessica describes sounds is amazing, looking forward to the rest of vlogmas. also look at Claudia rocking that paper crown!
Words cannot describe how much I appreciate the volume lowering when screams happen. You're saving some of your listeners a lot of stress ❤
Lots of love to you ladies and all of you here ❤️😚😊
oml y’all are so adorable!!! 😭
It's really cool to get to see someone experience these things for the first time (or even the first time in a long time)
Claudia gently brushing back Jessica’s hair is everything. I hope the private issue/thing gets better!
Those are amazing hearing aids! Being able to discern dimension like the fact that you can tell the tinsel was open to the air rather than contained and hearing such soft sounds like a candle...that's amazing!
Coming back to watch them talk about how there sometime happening in the background of their life now that we know it’s a baby 🥲🥲🥰
I am truly blown away by how much Jessica can hear!! She couldn't understand people without lipreading before and now she can hear Claudia with a blindfold on! I'm so incredibly glad you were able to get these hearing aids and I hope you continue to discover more wonderful sounds! Lots of love! xxx
How wonderful to get better hearing! Except for matches! So happy for you!
The 12 vlogs of Christmas my true love gave to meeeee ❤️🎄
This is the year I've finally accepted I'm disabled! My conditions have slowly gotten worse until I can't hide it anymore. I've also gotten an assistance dog this year so learning to be visible in public. Embracing the disabled identity and community, mostly online as remote island living is difficult when you're different.
*sending hugs*
*the sound of my wife eating a boiled sweet*
I'm just over here all happy for her being able to hear more sounds now. And quite impressed at her accurate guesses and descriptions of the sounds. Reminds me of how certain common items or not so common ones are used to create sound effects for movies. I just learned that stereotypical dolphin sound from Flipper and many cartoons and such is actually the laugh of a kookaburra but played sped up.
After binge-watching all of your old Vlogmases, I can finally watch one live and kinda feel lika a part of it all😍
Taking care of yourself is very important and should come first! Very glad you recognize that and are giving yourself what you need
The rubik's cube was truly impressive.
I love how she moves her hands to mimic the sound
This was fascinating, the way she described sounds was so thorough, but baffling. It had me questioning how I heard everything 😂
I’m sorry there’s been family things going on! I hope you two will be adding to your family soon, too! I know pre-pandemic that was a hope of yours!
I remember when I got my first digital hearing aids I heard all sorts of things and spent weeks trying to identify what they were
You'd love the heck out of music school. You get credit for basically doing just that...with a piano or voice and such.
Then several years spent on "why..." music is what it is.
Jessica describes sounds so well, specially considering the fact that she's deaf lol shes a super human indeed
In the comics, Hawkeye the Marvel superhero was deaf and wore hearing aids. Yours seem very cool and high tech like for a superhero
This is my favorite UA-cam video for this whole year. Watching Jessica hear made my heart happy.
I cannot express how impressed I am with how accurate your hands were to moving the sounds if that makes sense
The absolute fascination of Jessica comprehending new sounds is beautiful - makes me really appreciate what I take for granted!
I'm so happy for you Jessica!! Your reactions were priceless ❤
It is the 2nd so Happy Birthday, Claudia!! May your next year be full of joy and blessings.
