I moved to Malaysia 8 years ago after marrying a local. Electric $35 a month with air con and big freezer. Very clean water free from a bore. Have a local Aeon mall and Lotus for groceries etc. Alcohol is expensive compared to cost of living but you can’t have it all! Lived in Thailand before here and would never go back there to live, holidays yes, as we live close to the border.
Malaysia has millions of foreigners who choose to be here as foreign workers as well as expatriates. Every person's income can be adjusted to their needs and goals for coming here. The situation can be better if a person can quickly be adapted to the culture, food and climate of the country. I hope you will continue to enjoy the comfort of life that our country could offer.

I am from NYC where EVERYTHING is super expensive, when you said that your rent ranges from $400-500 I was flabbergasted and it doesn't look like some run down, rat infested place in the ghetto where you hear gunshot every five second. Still not close to retiring but I am living a more spiritual life. Love your fashion sense, hope that you're enjoying your retirement!
Thanks for sharing your experience living in Malaysia. My current goal is to retire in 9 years, but my retirement income will have me in poverty here in the US, so I may consider other countries. It's good to know that Malaysia is a viable location, and that I can get by as an English only speaker.

I made the mistake of getting a massive apartment when I first moved to KL. what you don’t realise is that you have to cool it with aircon and it’s an unnecessary expense. So I went from 1400 sqft to 700 sqft. Not only did I save on aircon, I saved on rent, which went from 3000 RM to 1800 RM. The facilities were even better in the smaller condo.

Hi Andrew, It depends on the value of the currency for a country. If seen now, $1 is equivalent to RM4.46. If your income is $2000 per month it is equivalent to RM8921.6. That's big enough. While the gross income for an employee in Malaysia is the lowest is RM1500 per month equivalent to $336.26. Of course it has a big difference. Among the reasons why Americans especially choose to retire in Malaysia is because of the very low cost of living.

Malaysia is an oil producing country. So electricity and transport and food and fuel are subsidized. Water is a no brainer, we are a tropical country. As you know, it pours here.
That's is something we should not take for granted.. rain water is only as good as the harvesting and if we keep our water catchment in good state.. the recent flood flash cases should serve as a reminder to that.. oil will eventually run out but thank god not anytime soon.. and if world oil shortages is bad enough, wait till we run out of fresh water..
A wise advise on how we need to sustain healthily the availabe natural God given resources in this country and not to take these for granted. Thank you again Andrew and may your advise be heeded by other Malaysians.
Thank you sir for your video. I’m currently staying in Thailand, but I feel a bit isolated because of the language barrier. I’m planning a trip to Malaysia and found your video very helpful.
God bless you Andrew.. wish you great health.... You inspired me... I'm 51 now and really planning to move to Malaysia... Thanks for the valuable details 👍

Hi Andrew, Glad to hear you are happy in Malaysia. I see you only have about 300 subscribers but you have more than 80 comments, this is incredible! I'm offering remote accounting support to small business in the US through a platform, I can feel the living cost there! I hope you continue enjoyed your stay in Malaysia and show more good videos.
yes it depends on how much you willing to pay if im a very budgetted retiree, i probably would spend RM500 on a small to medium condo room, which i can use the gym and swimming pool RM1500 is sufficient to eat well like most mamak and chinese hawker stall including groceries RM30 if share broadboard with the other tenant rm40 for phone 4g n call RM120 is enough for all vespa/ scooter expenses inclusive petrol, insurance, road tax rm200 health expenses if any RM200 for entertainment like movie, park, basic shopping, cloth and gadgets RM50 electric and water if uses less aircond RM60 contigency like donation, lost documents RM2700 which is about USD650 a month only
I’m an Australian living in Bangkok. It sounds like the costs are pretty much comparable. Somethings are cheaper, some more compared to Malaysia. Alcohol is cheaper here, rents similar and street food probably also comparable.
You should try AIA health insurance. Covers till you are 100 yrs old. The premium remains the same based on the age you purchase it. I purchased mine when I was 52 yrs old and paid less than RM400 per month. It also covers life insurance and an investment policy. I was fortunate that for health coverage, the max claim per year is RM1 mil and there is no life limit. If you have any of the 33 life threatening illnesses, they have a lump sum pay out and you need not have to pay for the monthly payment after that. You could try looking into that
@@andrewtaylor4558 regarding the stricter MM2H requirements, I believe it was changed when we have a hybrid govt here comprising many different parties. Hopefully after the election soon, a new solid government might revert to the earlier much expat-friendly version! Lets pray for that to happen.
Compliments on a nice job with this video. I appreciate the straightforward, no nonsense delivery. My wife and I are going to be in KL the month of October. Will be looking for an apartment in that city for a longer stay, 6 months to a year to start. Do you have any pointers on how to find one similar to yours? I'll be watching your other videos in case you've already covered that.
@@cocoanib If you want to be close to KLCC, you will most likely have to pay RM 3,000 or more per month. I’m 3.5 kilometres from KLCC in Ampang and the prices are much lower. I’ll be doing an apartment tour soon so stay tuned!
Andrew Taylor right, living in Malaysia you can enjoy good quality stuff with low cost. Of course not at all, for good medical you need to pay more for good doctor & good medication. Thanks Andrew for sharing with us. 👍🙏
thank you for the great info! glad i came across your video as i am in the process of deciding where to retire next year and am contemplating about Malaysia, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines - have you made any videos on how you chose Malaysia over other south east Asian countries?
True, I have similar problems although I am local. I'm tired of getting furniture for the unfurnished. Currently, I live in a furnished unit but I need to earn something and need to go to a new place soon.
Wow I have freind retired to Philippines He texted me a few days ago 92 octane is 76 pesos or about 1.40 us a liter 3 times more than Malaysia I've shared Andrews video with him On the benefits of Malaysia
Thanks Andrew , very interesting to hear of your comfortable and fascinating life style in wonderful Malaysia -- a country I have had the good fortune to have visited several times . Am I right in thinking ex-pat /retirement visas have recently become a bit more difficult and costly to obtain ? Good health .
Yes, it is much harder at the moment to get a long term visitors visa. I’m doing a video on that this week tough so stay tuned! Thanks so much for your comments!
I’m Thai-American married with American, now we thinking about retiring over there more than Thailand bc I think Thailand getting more expensive more it used to be. Thank you for your video.
Thank you, I am new to your channel and I certainly enjoyed getting a better insight into your life in KL as an expat. I am looking forward to watching your other videos as partner and myself have visited KL many times but only stayed for a matter of weeks at a time. I must say that I am some what envious of you as I doubt we would meet the criteria to retire there myself. Thanks again for the interesting video.
Thank you for the information Andrew, very interesting. Me and my partner are from the UK but have been living in France for a few years. Now I am trying to encourage my partner for us to move to warmer climes in the Far East with Malaysia being top of the list. Hopefully we will make it.
You are charming and very straightforward, I like that. I'm shopping for a good place for my mother, who enjoys Asian culture, as I do, but has serious mobility issues -- would Malaysia or any other country (other than her native US) work out?
Thanks so much. Most areas in Malaysia are ok for mobility issues. Sidewalks are inconsistent but newer ones have handicapped cut outs. Asian in general does not always seem to consider this though. Sadly. 😞
Just subscribed to your channel. My wife and I love south-east Asia. We visited KL a few years back and loved it. We wanted to visit Panang this year but wasn't able because of the lock down. Spent 4 months in Thailand and Vietnam instead. Hoping things will be back to normal in 2023. Do you have any recommendations on good quality 2-3 month rentals in Penang?
I love Thailand and Vietnam but think life is easier in Malaysia. I think that you will LOVE Penang! I don’t know much about short term rentals but you might look into the Landmark at Tanjung Tokong. Hope you make it back here soon!

Hi Andrew! Having lived in Canada, where alcohol & cigarettes are heavily taxed, the price for alcohol in Malaysia is about what I am used to. Luckily I don't drink or smoke! I look forward to hearing more about the cost of health insurance (especially: in country vs international). While out of work a while back, I found the cost of health insurance was so expensive, and I'm not old, that I had to do without for a while! So I am concerned about the cost of insurance, and quality of care, once I am past retirement age over there. Would it be possible to compare the cost & quality of Malaysia vs Thailand and Indonesia? You said you like to ride your Vespa around Malaysia (or just KL?)...any chance you could include video of the countryside, small towns, city life & things to do that does NOT include the beach? There are way too many UA-cam videos of the beaches, but so few that show city life, the country, etc.
Thanks for the ideas for future videos! I plan on getting more into insurance. I have ordered a camera holder for my Vespa so will be taking you around more on her too! 😊
@@andrewtaylor4558 Fantastic! I like watching Vagabond Awake, and have now found your channel. Great to have additional information about Malaysia! (BTW: Any idea of what Indonesia is like in comparison to Malaysia?)

Hi Taylor, always a joy to watch ur video blog. Stay safe riding ur scooter, u know Malaysian driver not the most courteous on the road unfortunately. Good video & accurate info. Although outside of big cities like KL, the same standard can be achieved at 60-70% this given number. So if in KL it costs you $2000, outskirts will cost $1200-$1400

Social Security doesn't deduct Medicare? Medical care is one of my major concerns. I am in excellent health now and exercise everyday, but I did have a quadruple bypass 6 years ago. My meds are paid by Medicare and I only pay about $15 month in copays. I am over 75 & have lived in Vietnam, Japan, Panama and the UK. I have well visited 31others. Now, I'm considering staying in Johor Bahru while my wife of 18 months, is awaiting her US Visa. She has been working in Singapore for over 11 years. As you know, Singapore is off the charts for rents, etc. But, staying in Malaysia is cheaper than even here in Florida. This way can be together on the weekends. Any thoughts? Great info and video. Thanks
Great video. From what I understand, you cannot just "pack up and arrive" now as they have some restrictions in place for people wanting to retire - this is becoming more common in lots of countries.
Except for the fact the Malayan government keeps changing the rules, it'd be a great place. Just remember foreigners are required to pay double when visiting the zoo or other attractions.so yes, the government IS out to take advantage.

Idk if there are different prices for foreigners on mobile phone bill. Umobile could get you around $7 with capless data. However, their reception is mainly good in large cities. Larger coverage telcos cost a bit more pricing about $25 a month also with limitless data. Btw, your voice is soothing to listen to. I could listen to you talking for hours.

Thank you for your kind words. I love Malaysia!
Hi Andrew,
Glad to hear you are happy in Malaysia. I see you only have about 300 subscribers but you have more than 80 comments, this is incredible!
I'm offering remote accounting support to small business in the US through a platform, I can feel the living cost there! I hope you continue enjoyed your stay in Malaysia and show more good videos.
Thanks for your kind words. I have an accountant here in Malaysia, a semi-retired American CPA, but I’ll keep you in mind if I need you in the future!
yes it depends on how much you willing to pay
if im a very budgetted retiree, i probably would spend
RM500 on a small to medium condo room, which i can use the gym and swimming pool
RM1500 is sufficient to eat well like most mamak and chinese hawker stall including groceries
RM30 if share broadboard with the other tenant
rm40 for phone 4g n call
RM120 is enough for all vespa/ scooter expenses inclusive petrol, insurance, road tax
rm200 health expenses if any
RM200 for entertainment like movie, park, basic shopping, cloth and gadgets
RM50 electric and water if uses less aircond
RM60 contigency like donation, lost documents
RM2700 which is about USD650 a month only
Sounds like you have it all figured out! 😊
I just found your channel , I love it ,I’m 61 now , we are planning travel around and thx for your sharing the living costs. SUBSCRIBED
I ran across your video and its interesting to compare your expenses with where we retired, South Korea. Thanks for the video. Sub'd and liked.
Thanks. That video is a year old. Many more. 😊
Really good information Taylor. I look forward to your further videos.
Thanks! I have one coming tomorrow on Medical in Malaysia.😊
You could try looking into that
Thank you so much for the tip!
Hi Angie, can you recommend a good medical insurance broker?

Andrew, you will be more supprise if you live in east cost Malaysia 😎
terima kasih kerana memberi pandangan berguna kepada yg lain bang taylor
Andrew Taylor right, living in Malaysia you can enjoy good quality stuff with low cost. Of course not at all, for good medical you need to pay more for good doctor & good medication.
Thanks Andrew for sharing with us. 👍🙏
Stumbled on this video. Great content.
Appreciate the video!
I was hoping there would be something other than audio on prices but thank you!

So interesting to listen to your thoughts about life abroad. Thank you for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
For foreigners that could earn around USD2000-5000 per month, definitely already could have very comfortable life in Malaysia
thank you for the great info! glad i came across your video as i am in the process of deciding where to retire next year and am contemplating about Malaysia, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam and Philippines - have you made any videos on how you chose Malaysia over other south east Asian countries?
Thanks, in my “Retire at 60 in Malaysia” I go into the choice some but it was mostly that English is so widely spoken in Malaysia!
This video is my introduction to Malaysia. Very helpful. God bless.
True, I have similar problems although I am local. I'm tired of getting furniture for the unfurnished. Currently, I live in a furnished unit but I need to earn something and need to go to a new place soon.
I have already sent you an email so we will discuss more via email.

Hi Andrew , Nice Video , Thanks for taking time to cover everything so thoroughly. Ive just subscribed and hope to learn more about Malaysia !

You might qualify for Sarawak MM2H. Have you seen my video?

Sadly. 😞
Thanks Andrew for positive feedback.
Because in few years I do plan the same
Hope u enjoy your stay here in Malaysia sir...there's a lot of beautiful places to explore..the nature, wildlife etc

BTW, ur loft location is spot on strategic, nearby good hospitals, giant supermarket. Suggest u go to nearby Ampang Point for good food and maybe take us with u too.
The are many Japanese, South Korean and Middle Eastern included Iranian expartriat in Ampang Area.
Yes, I’ve noticed a large Middle Eastern population here in Ampang. Thanks for watching!
Good video & accurate info. Although outside of big cities like KL, the same standard can be achieved at 60-70% this given number. So if in KL it costs you $2000, outskirts will cost $1200-$1400
Good point, thanks!
Very good video with very relevant info. I have thought about retiring in Malaysia. Wonder how it would be like in Kota Kinabalu or Kuching. I have lived in Brunei before. Loved it there. Will watch more of your videos.

Very insightful thanks. I'm 25 so I'm far from retirement but it still helps to know what to expect there lol
Thank you for a well presented video. You're well spoken and well understood. Looking to see more vids. And keep space on your sofa if I visit. Lol
Well is depend where you living and how you spend. One thing I would said is you no need to paid much for qualities food over here.
Thanks
Yep, I declined part B so pay nothing to Medicare. I pay my meds out of pocket. Good luck to you with your plans. Sounds exciting!
I would like to visit you Taylor,.......then you can explain more .....
Great video. From what I understand, you cannot just "pack up and arrive" now as they have some restrictions in place for people wanting to retire - this is becoming more common in lots of countries.
No, you can’t just pack up and arrive unless you are just on vacation. 😊
What is a good site to find property in KL? Airbnb I suppose is one but are there others for short term rentals?
Except for the fact the Malayan government keeps changing the rules, it'd be a great place. Just remember foreigners are required to pay double when visiting the zoo or other attractions.so yes, the government IS out to take advantage.
8:07 they say new york is the city that never sleep
Well.... They havent try KL yet.....we in kl sometimes dont sleep at all......we can clubs...... after club at 3am we went to mamak for tea and headed for futsal at 4am.......by 6am we are already up and headed for work
Lol 😂
You made a good choice, I did too but in Thailand. I worked in Lumut Malaysia , nice country indeed. Best of luck there.

By the way, you voice looks great, may I ask you what is the microphone and camera you are using ?
@@DuneKraftwerk OMG, thank you. So far my videos have all been done with an iPhone 8 with no external mics. I have purchased a new mic though. 😊
Enjoy your retirement life in Malaysia! May you blessed with long life and excellent health.
