    I thought this was probably the best video to comment on but have you done a video or talked a little bit about how you check the books you pick up/receive or how you identify issues with them (what you do when you find them with mould, booklice, etc)? I've not found one yet and had a bit of a search but no luck (though I did find your Wizard of Oz video with 'bookworm' weirdly, but that was a cool one to watch along the way). Elsewhere there are lots of videos from pest controllers and such but just wondering how a bookseller manages that. Not a sexy subject, I know, but I've just encountered my first bug in a box of vintage books I received and now I'm all set for burning down the apartment and everything else within a 10 mile radius!

    What a challenging pick ! Kind of a fantasy to be turned loose in a house just stacked with good books. Bummer that you didn't find more of what you were looking for but it did look like you found some cool stuff. Thanks for the video, Phil ... really enjoyed it. oldnndway

      I realize I kind of rushed going there on my end and wasn't set up properly, like making sure I had another person to help. I've just known from the past that I've missed out on things like this before when I didn't jump on it quick, so I was rushed myself a bit. But it's okay, overall I did okay but not great. I forgot to show that I found a first edition of the grinch that stole christmas so that was a good find too! Thanks for watching!

    Great video. Did you see the auction a couple weeks back in Scranton, PA? They were dispersing the remnants from the Scranton library's holdings. Around 3,000 books total. I'm not sure if anyone locally (NE Ohio) attended. I had a previous engagement or I would have gone. I've been trying to vacuum up all the Civil War titles I can lay my hands on. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos.

    I am flabbergasted by not only the number of books in the horder house, but by the absolutely disgusting condition of them. You have more intestinal fortitude than I, that's for sure. I would not have lasted ten minutes in that mess. Booktube appreciates your sacrifice! I'm glad you found some good stuff there, but really they should have been paying you to haul it away.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  Рік тому +3

      Hahaha glad you appreciate it! Yeah I usually don't get into things like this, with no help it was an impossibility to get through and the air was not good. It was fun to a point. They wanted me to take them all, NO FREAKIN WAY. Thanks for watching!

  • @kgsuniquerareandantiquebooks

    Nice finds. I really love digging through book hoards like that, but the back-breaking isn't always worth it.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely, in all honesty gotta take the L on this one in terms of the final result, I really was expecting to haul at least an SUV load but it became very unrealistic as I got into it. Took a gamble, usually I am rightfully apprehensive on many of these and handle it differently or not at all, but this one had appeal... I guess I treated it like it was some of the past woman I've entertained and it wasn't my brain doin the thinkin. Thanks for watching Ken!

    Looks like paradise to me amongst all those book boxes and stacks, however, 2things come to mind. First spiders, so that’s a nope for me and second, seeing you holding your car keys when you talk about washing your hands Phil, can you imagine misplacing the keys in this joint…..just saying😜😜🤪🤪

    I have Danse Macabre by Stephen King. Bought it and read it about 30 years ago, and in it King gives a recommended reading list. I went out to several used bookstores at the time and.purchased as many paperbacks as I could find on the list. Still have them.

    I love those kind of picks. Going back years ago, I picked through a house--packed--and I mean every wall in the house from the top to the basement was loaded with ONLY pocket size paperbacks. The house was in Marine Park Brooklyn. When I arrived there were two ladies picking through. The books were selling for 25-cents. I removed about 20-banker size boxes from that place. I wish I'd picked through the house that you just did. I would have turn it upside down. You know better than I, but I fear you may have left gems behind. Hopefully not. God only knows, how much more, Lovecraft, and occult books, were buried deep in piles of boxes. Anyhow, I hope you scored enough books to cover the cost of the trip. I aways enjoy these kind of videos. 😊

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  Рік тому

      That's awesome, sounds like a heck of a score! I couldn't take the smell anymore, the basements conditions were terrible, I really needed help for the size of the pick. I went through a lot of material for 6 hours straight. I just was worn to the bone, 5 hours there and 6 hours of picking. I had to get back home to take care of my parents' animals and that was weighing on me while I was there. Looking back now I should have probably sucked it up and went back. Oh well, they'll be another pick around the corner!

    There are times I sit here in my apartment thinking "this place is so cluttered!" and then I watch a video like this. Nope, I'm doing good. I'd be wanting to wear gloves and masks... maybe a hazmat suit??
    You picked up so many cool things! Definitely still a market for horror, etc. Guillermo Del Toro also brought out a Netflix horror series "A Cabinet of Curiosities" last year which included adaptations of Lovecraft's work, so I wouldn't be surprised if that brought him to the attention of those that may not have encountered his work before (even if the series itself didn't quite hit the mark for many).

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  Рік тому +1

      Haha yeah I know I'm the same! This house definitely topped out in clutter! I should have had a mask and gloves, it was rough.
      Definitely happy with the horror picks, overall pretty solid material to sell!
      Thanks for watching!

      Thanks for not taking offense, I really was curious 😅. Working in the medical field, it’s not uncommon to see that (when patient takes their hat/cap off when being roomed). Interesting how they go from looking 30 with a hat to 50s without. Nothing wrong with 50, it’s just the difference in appearance that’s surprising. Nice to know horror books are a thing! Do you have fun rummaging through collections of books like this when you have to think of the financial side of it or does that ruin it for ya?

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  Рік тому +2

      I have fun when I'm finding exciting material. The good finds were in the first couple hours, then it dried up. It was a physical impossibilty to get through them all. The finanacial side definitely starts to take more precedence than it used to, especially with an employee now, sometimes I can't remember if she's working for me or if I'm working for her! The conditions became so terrible however it wasn't fun anymore, breathing in that crap was going to my head. I wouldn't say money aspect necessarily takes away the fun, not to sound too corny but it's still kinda "magical" still an adventure, when that stops I'll stop the business because there are far easier ways to make money. - thanks for watching man, hope you've been well!

    Off topic, If you have or come across a sub $100 New Directions Siddhartha in the slipcase i am in the market for one. Actually in the market for any interesting affordable editions of Siddhartha or Steppenwolf for that matter. I see them online but I'd rather wait and find one in the wild or from a seller i can trust. ✌️

    Poor older(vulnerable)lady. Little did she know when she decided to have this book-trader into her home, that she,her home,lifestyle(which is nobody's business)& book archive, would be subjected to the judgmental, dismissive, bad-mouthing, reductive attitude evident in the video from trader & viewer alike! Shameful. Badly done, 'Mr', badly done!

    • @thebookpeddler

      🤣 You obviously didn't watch the video, the original owner died and left the burden on others to sort out, I came in and prevented all of it from being destroyed and salvaged what could be to rehome it. Exploitation? The original owner was never named nor their face shown, my channel gives a behind the scenes look into what every book dealer around the world encounters at some point in their career. Maybe you should write to the tv show "Hoarders" and express your heartfelt moral superiority to them. So shut your judgmental, shameful foolish mouth "angieb" you're a moron with too much time on your hands to flap your arrogant gums that got it wrong, get off my channel loser, no ones cares about your opinion, especially me
