The use of seroquel in the elderly population residing in nursing homes is an atrocity!

    • @claireh.7605

I don’t think it’s used a lot anymore maybe only on very severe behavior wards; the elderly get out on and taken off SSRIs and psych meds without tapering.. in a nursing home you have elderly going out of control putting others in danger and doing unstoppable things.. say someone keeps demanding to leave and won’t listen.. or keeps getting out of bed and doing unreasonable stuff.. you can’t have 1:1 for every patient 24/7 and then it might be impossible

I'm one of the people who was misdiagnosed with "bipolar 2" and I took a low dose of seroquel for a few years. They wanted me to take a much higher dose and I'm glad I stood my ground and refused. I actually have high functioning autism, CPTSD and borderline traits, not any kind of bipolar. I settled on seroquel after Abilify induced or exacerbated mania, which no one believed or took seriously about 10 years ago. I'm glad to have a little vindication here. No doctor EVER said *anything* about *any* of this. In fact a doctor I saw *last year* insisted none of this was possible. I did have side effects and I'm horrified I ever put this in my system, *never again*. Thank you for putting this information out there.

I was given this as an aid to my Lexapro for depression as a "mood stablizer" and sleep aid. I'm not bipolar nor schizophrenic, and feel like I should not be on this mediation at all, much less the rather high dose of 300mg. 12 years later, my brain and body are so dependent on this crap that when I ran out recently and had to go 1 night without my dose, literally just 1 dose and I became so sick I had to miss work the next day. The absolute worst feeling I've ever had in my life I thought I was dying. I never want to feel that feeling again and at the same time desperately want off but I don't see that happening any time soon. I'm essentially a prisoner to this mediation and there's nothing I can do about it.

Same here, i am lexapro 10mg and was on 400mg of seroquel for sleep Im now down to 12.5mg with little to no side effects. THC became legal in Missouri and decided a very low dose of thc/cbd to assist to me. Its still rough those first few nights to get use to taper dose but not nearly as painful. I lowered from 400mg to 300mg , 300mg to 200mg, 200mg to 100mg, 100 to 50 mg, 50mg to 25mg, 25mg to 12.5 (current). You got to take the tapering process very slow. I am 1 year and a couple months in. I did take a 4 month break in tapering. I have been on seroquel for 10 years.
Side effects the first few days of tapering: Insomnia, possible nausea(higher doses), shivers (higher doses).
I did a brisk walk in the morning, not to only to wake me up but to help me fall asleep at night. I was 250lbs and now i am 210 lbs. The munchies are still there but less extreme.
Everyone responds differently , id recommend THC or CBD if THC is not legal where you are at. Take a small dose, i take 2mg THC(indica) 2MG CBD gummy. I dont get high from it just drowsy.
I do not recommend those who have the actual reasons to be on seroquel to try THC without talking to your doctor as both thc and seroquel are both psychoactive drugs.
And remember slowwww and steady wins the race with seroquel. Snails pace if you have too. Maybe cut that 300mg in 4 and take 3 (225mg) or 3 1/2 (262.5mg) and stay their for 2 weeks. Since you work you really got to go slow so your not miserable at work.

I took seroquel 50 mg very night for “insomnia-related depression”, and within 6 months, my blood pressures were consistently 140/90 or greater, and I had gained 20 pounds. I overnight became massive sweets/candy binge eater. Even after stopping the drug by the 7th month (after starting it), I continued to gain another 17 pounds well beyond the annual date of starting seroquel.
When I say that my appetite was insatiable while taking seroquel, that doesn’t even do it justice. I would eat so much until I was physically over-full and in pain, slightly nauseated... and 15 minutes later I’d be obsessing about eating something again. Within weeks, I’d learn to dread my zombie-like walks to the fridge. By the time I hit 197 pounds, none of my underwear fit, none of my bras, pants, shirts- nothing fit. I had to buy XL and XXL in almost everything. And I was even more sad than I had been before starting the seroquel.

Nothing about the "chemical lobotomy", "chemical restraints", or how these kinds of drugs were used by the Soviet Union to torture political prisoners, and how it worked? What about how people on this drug can't even feel love? You could try a typical dose yourself, for perhaps a 6 week trial, or even one of the long-acting injectables, and give a first hand account in a follow up report.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh. I'm actually a fan and subscriber, but my wife and our whole family suffered terribly as a result of this drug.

I was diagnosed bipolar in 2016, never got on meds even though I was prescribed Quetiapine. I feel now, it can be a game changer for me. As low a mg as possible. Just scared because I have all my hair, my health is great especially cardiovascular as I am an avid excerciser, and feel getting on this is a gamble.

I started lactating and lost my period and was incredibly itchy. It turned out that the tiny dose I took for sleep gave me a pituitary gland tumour that gave me menopause at 30. I had to take Dostinex to shrink the tumour and spent every weekend in bed throwing up from it. The first time I took seroquel I fainted in the shower, I was 22 and I phoned the doctor saying I don’t want to take this stuff. She told me I had to so I did what she said. She also put me on Effexor 150 and that eventually gave me seizures. Then Lexapro and that gave me seizures too.
I now take a tiny dose of CBD and feel great and I sleep well.

I actually feel like I function better on no sleep than I do on Seroquel sleep. In fact, I stopped going to the gym because I wake up exhausted every morning. Maybe the problem isn't my age but rather the Seroquel. My diet is squeaky clean so the exhaustion didn't make sense until now. Thank you.

Never been warned about the risks, but for some reason it caused me to get addicted to alcohol, to get away from the constant nervousity it increased in me i guess. So one day I went to rehab for alcohol and after a week the psychiatrist looked at me concerned; you can't go on like this it's damaging you too much. I said; wtf I'm here to get rid of alcohol addiction, and I can handle the withdrawal. He said no, I'm less concerned about the alcohol I'm talking about the Seroquel. While I had taken it for 5 years or something. I said wtf then what are you shrinks think you are doing??! You want to kill me? I got terribly upset and day after i was ordered to leave the clinic... With Seroquel. Got send to ambulant mental health but they kept hammering on me to take Seroquel. Tried another psychward to quit drinking but I told them , this Seroquel, i need something else. I detoxed for two weeks, still Seroquel. Got depressed. Then they decided to start building up the low dose of this shit I took to 10 times higher. I wasn't allowed to disagree. So I stayed there four weeks and rejected to take more of it. Then resigned. Srill thinking well I need to take this then not to get psychotic. 5 years ago i quit it on my own, including useless anti depressants. I haven't gotten psychotic, neither did I get much more depressed. Only extremely sad cause finally I could think clearer and see what it done to nearly half of my life. It nearly killed me and I never had functioned as I probably could have.. And it got me increasingly addicted to alcohol. I also quit attaining psychiatry or mental health organization in the Netherlands. I'm still shocked if I think of it. BUT AT LEAST I AM ABLE TO SEE IT. how long I'll still be alive, god only knows. But really... This stuff ruined my life and probably forever. I still can't function as before.

So are you aware that lexapro is actually a Seratonine (excuse me english is not my native language) It keeps seratonine in your system longer. But seroquel Deteriorates or slows down production of seratonine. Aka they contradict eachother, Also the side effects of long use of seroquel is life shortening.... i've been using the medication for 12 years now. Lexapro and seroquel. However i used thank goodness seroquel on a se;f regulated basis so i usually prefer not to take it at all. It makes me way more depressed and agressive the day after i took it. Wich also results in people asking me to take it again. wich is a frustrating cycle to go through. And very hard to explain or get acceptance for.

Yeah, I found it useful too. 25mg, sometimes I even break one in half for sleep. Sure, some munchies towards bedtime, but it's resistable if you otherwise are disciplined with diet and exercise. I have lost weight on it and am in the shape of my life. It's easier to follow an exerciseroutine and diet once you can get enough sleep, which makes this video and the following discussions rather un-nuanced in my view. Sleeping-problems are a terrible ongoing issue for me. This stuff has helped me the most out of anything I tried. As with all medicine, there are no perfect solutions. It's a risk/benefit analyzis. I don't see the video discuss dosing, and what that does to the risk-profile either. Me who hover around 12,5-25mg will surely have another risk profile than some bipolar/schizophrenic that works in the 200-800mg range?

Hi, I would like to know, are the changes to receptors reversible? i.e are the D2 receptors and 5HT2A receptors no longer blocked after successfully coming off the medication? Thank you

I am off this 2.5 years od 2. I am dull and stupid as f..k. I am 24. I want to cry. Abilify helped me but I had to take it off cause I had a terrible akathisia. It made me smarter but when I don’t take it ofcourse I’m not that “smart” anymore. But yes, I feel like My iq is 80.

Can it leave permanent heart problems? (even when you have stopped it and it's been a couple of years since you did)

It caused me long qt syndrome, but as I am nearly off of it, my qt is nearly back to normal. I hope this is the same for you.

@@El-wc5hl Thank you for your reply! I've been off it for enough time to suppose its non permanent effects have stopped. I'm kind of scared to go to the cardiologist, not sure why, maybe because we won't find common ground on Seroquel. Thank you for your response again and wish you a smooth as can be coming off and healing! ❤️

@anteg9084 You're welcome for the reply, and thank you for your kind words. The only cardiac problem I am aware of is, as mentioned, is prolonged qt. That means that there is a longer gap between part of the rhythm of your heart beat called the qt interval - as seen on the graph. It doesn't often cause any symptoms but can be serious as very, very rarely the heart pauses for too long. I know that sounds terrifying, but it is very unlikely. If you did have this problem identified, then people around you could be taught cpr, and you could always wear a bracelet with this information. Please don't be scared to go to the cardiologist. I never had any issues other than the scare tactics used by the Dr's who harmed me in the first place. And the symptoms resolved as I dropped my medications - I was taking 4 "medicines " which cause long qt. I have a feeling all will be well for you. Sometimes, stress and fear are our biggest enemies. Best wishes and if there's anything I can help with please let me know.

@@anteg9084you don't need to agree on the cause or the treatment to get assessed by a dr. Just describe your symptoms and let the dr run tests so you know what's going on. Then you can decide what to do with the information.

@@El-wc5hl Thank you so much for the reply, again!! I haven't had it identified, been off quetiapine, which is my main concern regarding this issue, for some time now. Still feel weird stuff happening with my heart sometimes (mostly when I have forgotten to take the psych medication I'm stuck with (lorazepam, amitriptyline and perphenazine) - so, from withdrawal - or maybe when I am very upset - I am 40yo and obese because of psych meds, trauma and health conditions that steal my energy).
I am worried that if it's not happening at the specific time of my appointment, the cardiologist won't be able to 'see' it. Even if they give me a measuring device they stick on your body for a few days. My mother has had trouble showing her arrhythmias (hers are not because of meds) to her cardiologist. It took a year or more to catch it happening. Ooph!
Thank you so much again! ❤️

I heard that it knocks you out, but you’re still tired with brain fog the next day. Not worth the hangover.

Same here. I stopped going to the gym because I was literally too exhausted to exercise. I skipped my dose for the past 2 nights and only slept for about 4 hours but I have energy during the day. I think I'll put it aside for now.
