  • This video is the last run under load of a Crossley Premier 8 cylinder Vis A Vis engine on The 15 April 2010 In 1934 3 Crossley Premier 8 cylinder Vis a Vis engines driving Gwynnes Invincible water pumps where installed for land drainage, at this time it was the worlds largest pump drainage station. In 1951 a 4th engine was installed, the other 3 engines have been replaced with electric motors and a modern Allen diesel engine. The Crossley engine is rated at 1500hp at 215 RPM coupled to a David Brown gearbox reduced down to 93 RPM, the water pumps can displace 1057 Tons of water per minute with a static head of 9 feet. The intention is to remove the engine and gearbox for instalation at the 'Anson Engine Museum' in a running condition.

In 1930 my father Jack Powell then living in Blaen Gwynfi, a small mining village in S.Wales was offered a job as a general labourer to work on the construction of this pumping station, He took it and was given a one way rail ticket to Kings lynn. He found lodgings With mr & mrs Plaice who lived for many years at No 9 Sluice Rd St Germans. They had two daughters. He marred one of them in 1938 - Joan Plaice. After WW2 They moved back to S.Wales where they lived for the rest of their lives.

The first time I have seen a Crossley Premiere running only photos before, I served my apprenticeship at Crossley Bros. Pottery Lane works in Manchester in the 1950's so this video was very nostalgic for me, thank you for sharing,
    Bryan

@stingraystud If you look carefully you will see the other pair of valves underneath the cylinder head, opposite side.@6.10 can just see the other cam lobe working.Exhaust went out underneath to chimney stacks on the outside of the building.
My mate used to look after Tydd pumper, and i think they had 4 or 6 cylinder versions of these monsters, sadly all gone replaced by electric and i think new Scania lumps. When he had more than 1 engine running, the sound even with ear defenders was mesmerising!

You would definately have slept easier knowing this fine piece of technology was doing its job of keeping your home from flooding.
I don't know how big the associated fuel tank was, but they should have left it running until the tank was empty, no matter how many days it took.

i could watch that run all day long, love seeing the open valve train, where is the intake or exhaust valve though, all i see is the cam lobes opening one set of valves per cylinder, dont know if it is ex or in, is it an atmospheric intake valve that opens under vacum or what? nice video

So is this a flat 8 engine? Like a really big Porsche?

Yes, a flat 8 and quite an early one by the looks of it.

Does that engine have conventional poppet valves or something different?

2 stroke, goes direct into cyl thru side ports in cyl liner

@@andrewsmart2949 It is a four stroke, the valves are placed in the cylinder head at 90º to the cylinder bore. Blackstone also used this arrangement.

@@andrewsmart2949 At 6:00 you can see the two camshaft lobes for one cylinder, one operates the inlet valve , which is on top of the cylinder head, the other lobe , in a half turn of the camshaft/one full turn of the crankshaft, the other lobe opens the exhaust valve. In this video at 4:37 you can see s similar set up ua-cam.com/video/aHSdJDcnwKU/v-deo.html This is a single cylinder Crossley with a side shaft, not the longitudinal shaft of the flat eight Crossley.

@@user-sl3hs6de5y you serously describe that as a single cyl?according to wikipedia all crossleys diesels were 2 stroke with a patetented exhaust pulse "charging" system(the valves and rods you seee moving in pic,the small village i live in called perth on the coast of western australia knows alot about crossley diesels cos we are the only people in the world to re-engineer the HST vee 8 crossley engine in the x class diesesls of WAGR(west australian govt railways),600 modifications to original design LOL,last ones used around world in 1972,wagr used till 1989 LOL
