So that's how it goes. Great lesson, and much simpler than I thought. That was the great Earl Slick on the opening riff, and the wonderful Carlos Alamor doing the rhythm parts.

Literally the best guitar tutorial I've seen. No babying us with strumming pattern up up down b.s. or explaining chords instead of just showing it on the screen. Nice.

Great song, explained well! Just gotta get my groove on now...
Nice breakdown -thank you.
Nice thanks love this David song and I got the slick 50s comming next week I can’t wait
Thank you!
Bowie's guitar arrangements are amazing in his songs. Really golden. Thanks for doing this song, I've wanted to play it for years.
I believe it was Earl Slick who came up with the lick. Bowie gave a lot of freedom to his session musicians to come up with their own stuff then he would adjust if needed.
@@bernbsy Yep Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar.
He had the good fortune of having guys like Nile Rodgers, Earl Slick, and Carlos Alomar playing with him.
thumbs up great lesson Ben thank you, Bowie is one of my favorite artists to play on guitar
Great tutorial! Man, that switch from A to A# diminished is so hard. It’s killing my fingers and brain, haha

Спасибо.
Thanks for uploading :) Yeah this A#dim sounds awkward to my ear... I play that part D G A F# A F7 B . Sounds in phase when I play along ;-)
I think this guy David, is way better than most and thank him for sharing i copped a few riffs. But the turn around via Carlos Alomar's video talking about this song shows D Bm D Bm G C A to F# on the 9th fret[not A#dim ]then B, then he plays the E7#9 on the 13th fret best i could tell thanks you again !! I definitely heard the A# until I watched Carlos
that sequence is ...D Bm D Bm G C A Bb(dim) Bm A9 (12th fret with no augmented 9th) then back to the Fsharp/E section. as far as my ears tell me. you say tomato I say tomayto.
Dang, I was just getting good at the A#dim. Ha.I'll have to check it out. I tried it just based on what you wrote, but it's obvious I got it wrong.
You're right. What David has done wrong is put up the fingering for an Adim instead of an A#dim - just move everything up a semitone to the 6th fret. Regardless, as you say, it's an F# anyway. Watching what Carlos plays I'd say it's D Bm D Bm G C A7 F# Bm7 E7#9
Wow Thanks Ben I'm a bass player but I always wanted to know the chords to this Bowie song. You make me very happy with these clear lessons👍🤘

super cool thx just sounds like that last chord of the complex break is on 14th fret what do you think?
sweet SG btw I was just using my sg for this song too just got a les paul classic with the p90s do think the p90s are better for this song?
very good tutorial, if you already know how to play, you will get all the information you need, thank you!

For me, just the right pace to keep that groove and feel while learning the nuances. Not for note for note chord players, get up to speed on the rhythm otherwise the funk goes cold, that’s why this song is the earworm it is.

the beginning was epic !
looks like the frets for the A# diminished here are written as A diminished. Everything needs to move up half a step, or one fret.

Okay, I recorded the first lick you hear on the record and slowed it way down to hear what is being played. The first hammer on chord is right, then on the "and a" he plays the C# twice quickly (he actually kind of muffs the first C# but I think it's intended to be picked twice) then the open E string then the hammer on to the Bb, open D back to the Bb. Listen how he does the second hammer on the F# chord too since it's different than the first before he goes to the descending lick. I think the descending lick is right. So he's not really strumming through the pattern but picking it but listen to the record for the phrasing and timing.

@@EpicGuitarInstruction Just saw Earl Slick play the riff and he strums it, so pick your poison, either pick it or strum it they both work. The album version is definitely picked.
Great info and tips, your feel is really good for the song and I really gained from listening to your rhythm. I have a few versions of the chorus chords from various sources and all seem ok but not quite right. Hence why I checked you out. So I still feel he chorus chords a bit of a mystery? So I had a listen to the original and I think they might be D to Bm twice then G to C ..... Am to A#dim .... Bm and actually finishing off with a high E dim (working down from the 15th fret with a top G note then a C# and an A# and an E on gtr with an E bass). Your chords sound close enough and I always thought it sounded like an E#9 Jimi Hendrix myself. Maybe you don’t agree ? but of all the versions on here yours is fab ta I learned a lot.

that lst chord should be a B7#9 after the b which is a Bm7

Great lesson on a cool song. For the last outro riff is there a chord at higher pitch missing?

@@EpicGuitarInstruction Thanks man. I think the missing chord in outro is 12th fret on high E and B strings or at least it sounds good to me. Will check 'er out.
right on Jeff - thank u for watching - u rock! Have a great day! -David Taub, Next Level Guitar Inc. & EGI
👊
Thanks, this is great, can't believe I couldn't figure out that turnaround chord (the E7#9). To all reading, you can also play it with the more common "Hendrix" shape of x7678x. And are you sure the chord before it is a B major? Sounds like another Bm7 to me?
Definitely a Bm chord of some kind IMHO. But apart from that this is a very good guide.
Btw the guitarists credited on the album sleeve notes are Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick, and Bowie himself. There isn't a track-by-track breakdown of the credits but presumably on Golden Years Alomar played the funky part on the left channel in stereo, Slick played the Hendrixy part on the right, and I think I can hear Bowie's acoustic in the background, especially in the chorus.
are you Marty Shwartz
They're both great!
i thought this was him at first lol
Who wants to know??
Nice. Want to sell that guitar? :D
Listening to the song I can't help but notice that the opening of the song is played on a Clavinet, not a guitar, and that the Clavi features throughout the song. Voicing-wise it does sound like a guitar riff though. Did they use a guitar-synth or something?
Earl Slick came up with and played this riff on a telecaster. Light overdrive in the bridge pickup position. It has that snappy attack that could be likened to a clav, I suppose, but it's def
a guitar riff.
You look like a guy I knew by the name of John Zinn. Any relation?
