- Roberto Duran takes on Sugar Ray Leonard in a fifteen round title fight for the WBC welterweight title of the world. A great fight.
Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Undercard bouts include:
Trevor Berbick W John Tate KO 9 10
Clyde Gray L Roger Leonard PTS 10 10
Fernand Marcotte D Eddie Melo PTS 10 10
Gaetan Hart W Cleveland Denny TKO 10 10
Excellent point. It also demonstrates how overwhelmed Leonard was at this point in the fight. A beautiful, brutal work of art by Duran with "masterful strokes" on a very large "canvas"!
Dead right! Great fighters in a great era. Duran was unreal in this battle. The intensity the two fought with is incredible.
Superb match. Two champions. 🏋️🏋️
Duran has great defense for a brawler..and that's scary.
Thats what i'm talking about ...... miss this kind of boxing
love it...now thats a fight.
My favorite fight of all time!
That was the great trainer, Ray Arcel, who gave Duran a psychological boost by touching him as he entered each round. Also, Mr. Arcel often gave Roberto a last word or two of encouragement or suggestion as he symbolically "launched" Duran into each round of battle. Duran was fortunate to have Ray Arcel & Freddie Brown in his corner; as these two older pros had more than 100 years of experience, as boxing trainers, between them. 50 years earlier Ray Arcel trained ATG Benny Leonard!
so very true, if he had stayed this way for the rest of his career instead of gaining all that weight and losing his focus, he really would have only had one loss and not only be one of the greatest lightweights of all time, but possibly one of the greatest welterweights as well
Esta fue LA batalla de la categoría peso ligero.
wow this is some crazy fight. LOVE IT! Duran is the man on this fight. Damn he is like Pacman but doesnt punch as much as Pacman. This is like Mayweather and Pacman fighting.
@jperez9805 Now THAT would be a very interesting match and i could see it being close. I haven't seen as much of Whitaker but was he as fast as mayweather? Either way that could be a really could technical fight.
@SPRINGS02 How about Floyd vs Pernell Whitaker? Hell of a chess match. Even a chance of a boring fight but for those who enjoy technical matchups this would have been very interesting.
The best fight ever
@jimpurdie i dont know about that we need to discuss that one more in detail
i've never had a chance to watch this fight. Fucking warriors man.
this fight was an absolute masterpiece by Hands of Stone! the man was truly a genius.
@samontucky Amen. Will o' the Wisp was s defensive genius. Wlifredo Bemitez in his prime was a great defensive fighter also.
the level of skill on desplay here by both fighters is beyond most boxing fans ability to see. if you can't see it youre probably not a hardcore boxing fan
(contd.) ... SRL feared Duran's power from outside and fought inside because it was his best chance at avoiding being knocked out by Duran. From middle of 2nd round forward, SRL held at every opportunity & stayed in close with Duran as his best strategy for lasting 15 rounds. Leonard's face was swollen beyond recognition next day. SRL's plane landed at Hershey, PA & SRL hospitalized there overnight over concerns of internal bleeding and poss.concussion*. * - Balto. Evening Sun - June 21, 1980
great fight
Those where some fucking good fights.
(cont.) ... and a scary guy ... especially as a lightweight ... just thinking of being in the ring with "hands of stone" ... sends chills though my body". It is obvious that " Sweet Pea " has a lot of respect for Duran and I am sure the respect is mutual. Also, RD was voted by sports writers as "Fighter of the Decade" for 70s and SRL was voted same for 80s. Both are ATGs. So is Whitaker but eclipsed by RD as ltwgt. and SRL as wtrwgt. but PW is on most top 20 ATG & p4p lists.- top 15 on some!
Golperuano,..rightfully so,..this was his ultimate peak,..at 29, and 145 lbs. Never looked better, meaner, leaner, quicker, nor 'boxed' as much, he truly wanted to and showed the world that he was the most complete fighter going at that time, and had been throughout the decade. This was his ultimate 'coming out' for the world to see him. had he been american he'd a been cherished alot sooner.
what a fight OMG
This was a fuckin war. My dad is a huge Duran fan and made me watch this fight years ago. I give Leonard props for fighting back like a champ but you can tell he didn't know what he was getting into when signing this fight.
THIS IS Y I LOvE BOXING
Duran's defense in this fight is magnificent. It was hard for Sugar Ray to land clean shots because Roberto's masterful head movement to slip punches...Hagler had the same problem against Duran.
I'm surprised that Ray didn't use more uppercuts with Duran constantly ducking down to neutralize the overhand right. Ray showed he had guts and heart but he just wasn't going to beat Duran in this kind of fight.
que peleon...estas eran verderas batallas en el cuadrilatero
MI IDOLO MANO DE PIEDRA DURAN
at 5:47 a pair of right hands were thrown that would have knocked a building down... i felt a breeze. thats scary to think anyone would have been hit there...
I LOVE IT I LOVE IT...
Duran was unbeatable in the shape he was in for this fight.
Middleweight and below have this kind of fighting still...
greatest fight ever
People use to call me Big Red, but I told them to stop it. Cause there's only one Big Red. America's favorite cinnamon gum.
now that is BOXE!
@JDezi4 Wow. How did we overlook Aaron Pryor? That guy was deceptively skilled as a boxer along with being a murderous puncher. Add him to the list of fighters that would beat Manny.
From the outset, the announcers stated that SRL was told by Dundee "not to fight backing up ... work Duran's body ... and go for an early KO". Surprise, when SRL allowed RD to punch from outside in 2nd round, Leonard got nailed hard & h/involuntary leg spacticity proved it. SRL held Duran & ignored ref''s objections & glove tapping. #rd rd flinching by SRL at every RD feint proved he feared Duran's power w/leverage. Ergo,
Announsers for this fight, blow.
@MrBoxinganalyst an actual argument, now you're talking my language. He does dart in and out and throw combination's. I still say he's a brawler(that doesn't mean he throws wild punches)just means he is better at slugging it out. Manny's punches come at awkward angles, making them hard to avoid. However i think floyd is faster than pac, and his shoulder roll will negate a lot of those punches, keep in mind floyd will probably use his foot work to keep pac off balanced and counter him all night.
@Maryjaneslave MMA is still it's infancy; Boxing has gotten substantially better in that sport. Check out Gomi vs Pulver if you want to see some quality Boxing in MMA. This fight however is the stuff of Legend! What an accomplishment by the Great Duran; leapfrogging the entire 140lbs division where so many of today's stop for quick title & taking on Leonard the best of his generation.
Arcel is on the edge of his seat.
@pildidoboxing If you think Duran had only power, again this proves your lack of boxing knowledge. Duran had very fast hands and great head movement. His fighting style didn't require side to side movement because he was a brawler. But he was an intelligent brawler with superior head movement that relentlessly attacked his opponents. If you are unaware, at the age of 37, Duran dropped the physically bigger, stronger and younger Barkley twice when won the Middleweight title. Duran is a legend.
Q boxiador mas cochino sugar sólo amarrando paso
brutal
does anyone know why duran vs pryor never happened? would of been fireworks!!
wat a fight so much heart, wil and determination all u haters dnt know wat it takes 2 stand toe 2 toe for 15 rounds
rd five ray quick off the bat with a nice left hook..ray agian doin alot of holding n stayin with counters,..good fighting by ray off the ropes,..duran with a nice right hand..duran a flurry of body shots along the ropes, and ray answers with the same,..last thirty secs of round ray clearly opens up withhand speed,..shakes up duran with a right,..and takes the round,..after 5 ,..its roberto 49-47
@TA152H01 2) soon, he was getting his aS+ WOOP. Padilla allowed SRL to use all these illigal tastics all night (big advantage for SRL hooking Duran's controlling his offence and le to star a fury while Duran's arms were still hooked) Ref. saved SRL as$ never broke them appart when SRL was rocked about 4 times. Duran was upset because SRL NAT. 147 challenged him NAT 135 ran his mouth so much and end up hanging and holding. If you know boxing SRL survive thanks to plan B opproved by the ref
@turningtide1
I don't know why Duran v. Pryor didn't occur... but, a conditioned Duran probably knocks Pryor out... especially if they would have fought in 1980 at 140 pounds.
7:52 , Damn what a body shot by SRL
he also said pacman would knock down marquez down 6 times in their third fight. He said khan would dominate and knockout danny garcia. He said that pacman would walk over and knockout timothy bradley. He also said that amir khan will be pfp number 1. Freddie roach predictions are just invalid. I think pacman in his prime vs roberto in his prime would be a good match up personally.
ref was known for letting them fight,..and hand slapping was the norm back then,..they broke alot on their own,..but Leonard did most of the holding as u can plainly see,..his arm hooking durans..
Just go to: Roberto Duran - Hall of Fame - and you will hear P. Whitaker with the announcer, who asks Pernell what he thinks of Duran. PW replies: "OMG, he's an ATG
@jimpurdie eh i dont know about reincarnation pacquiao is a great fighter but i havent seen no one to this day that can match the power of duran in any weight class
@SPRINGS02 Not as fast but still, deceptively fast. Super cagey and a southpaw to boot. Outside of Floyd, one of the best defensive fighters in the last 25 years. Intriguing matchup indeed.
Agree. I love Floyd but the likes of Leonard, Robinson, Duran, and Hearns were too good.
floyd smoyed hopefully he will get in the ring ing the next 6 months
@mavster0824 I'm not sure about that one. Duran had many more skills than Hatton did and he was a bigger man than Hatton also. He had defense, a good chin, and lots of inside game. Sugar Ray Leonard was a bigger puncher than Pacquiao.
Duran gave him a boxing lesson !! Sugar missed do many punches!! Cause Duran was a great technical fighter....
@MrBoxinganalyst It was a struggle between two evemly matched fighters. I'll give the 1st fight to Manny because I hate draws and the knockdowns were in his favor. Hats off to Marquez for coming right back, though. The 2nd fight was Marquez all the way. Again for as much as these guys struggled against each other; Leonard, Duran, Hearns would have put on a clinic against these guys. The sport hasn't evolved much in the last 30 years. Robinson was a beast in any era and would have massacred him.
rd six first min is rays as he throws the only two solid blows, neither which hurt, but solid nonetheless,..then duran gets him back into the ropes, forcing the action, but getting the worst of it as ray's speed takes effect,..duran a nice right before they move out back into center of ring..duran a nice counter right to ray before ray launches into him along the ropes,..scoring two good shots at roberto, good action last secs of fight,..but ray holds, takin rd 6,..so its 58-57...duran after six
@charadester You are absolutely right. Plus the main comentator is so incredibly biased towards Leonard it is a shame. A real king of wishfull-thinking.
@WLuico Duran hits harder than Margarito...Regardless of weight.
Duran probably at the height of his prowess.
@yaiqab
Mayweather's name is mentioned the same as ANY successful boxer's name is mentioned when comparison's are made... that's not new or unexpected. Floyd is undefeated and is a good boxer, natural to present hypothetical matchups... same was done with Roy Jones, Trinidad, and countless fighters over the years. If you think Floyd would be too "smart" for Duran you may not be aware of Duran's career. He wasn't some brawler, he was a smart boxer who could punch. Good defense too.
DURAN = BEAST!!!!
@MrBoxinganalyst Wow. Including Robinson??? Like I said before, for the first time in the history of the Phillipines, a quality fighter is produced and now, magically the country also produces...the seasoned and objective "Mrboxing analyst"!! We don't hate Manny. As far as you using my line in regards to "judging with your heart", that was originally directed at you. Get your own material. Duran AND Robinson?? The ultimate cardinal sin. What a character.
@TA152H01 and I grew up with mosly blacks here in PR I am so proud to say that we are not racecist at all, black, hispanic, never any problem at all good thing here in PR they just the same as anybody else. But Duran was better look how a 135 over power with skills a 147, think if you can,.. If Duran was 147 and SRL 135 do you think this fight would ever happend? Of course NO, no body would pay a penny for it, every body will know Duran will win by way of death. Duran was better think about it
I was reading posts on "Duran "Manos de Piedra" vs Sugar Ray Leonard 1 (part3), posted by MHagler, when I came upon the fanatical Pactard Mr. Boxinganalyst. He is very similar to "akosihelbert" on another video blog; "Mr. Box..." numerous & redundant posts are written to impress & please himself as his comments are devoid of any substantive analysis & show no knowledge of the skills, styles or boxing wherewithal of earlier ATGs like Robinson, Ali, Duran, Leonard, hearns, etc. Sad but true.
@MrBoxinganalyst lol im no groupie, im a fan. Big difference, i defend floyd with actual facts and statistics, not emotions.
@JDezi4 Yup. Prime De La Hoya indeed. Not the dried up version that fought
Manny.
Duran didn't do a Delahoya?? he never back-peddled like a ballerina! he simply mocked & showboated like Leonard himself does. Duran won this fight fair & square with his fists! Credit must be given to the little Lightweight that leap-frogged the entire 140lbs division; jumping 12lbs to challenge the best Welter of his generation Ray Leonard and WINNING!!
freddy roach said on espn friday night fights that pacman woulnt stand a chance against duran.
maybe at lightweight but if were talking p4p or catchweight 144 or welterweight i wud have to disagree
Duran turned pro in late 60's,so he had to be late 30's early 40's,and basically a prime Sugar Ray, the second fight was kinda unfair, Duran had a little bit of time to come down from 195,and be ready for a fight, Lenard was prancing around like it was am even fight, he made sure he fought a drained old man the second time, but we know what happens when its even, though Sugar was younger, Duran is hands down better
I actually think Duran would counter punch him and put on a clinic the way he did in the 3rd fight with DeJesus. Pacquiao is fast but is WIDE OPEN for the straight right hand and Duran is a master of timing and distance, not to mention pulling the trigger at the right time. It would be similar to what Marquez does, but Duran is superior to Marquez in every way.
R.I.P. Lou
@MrBoxinganalyst lol size doesn't equal skill though, i mean cotto is pretty big for his weight and he got beat by pac. Styles make fights, which is why floyd would be pac's worst nightmare. Think about it, Pac tends to fight come forward fighters who will trade with him, he's a brawler. Now a counter puncher of floyds skill level will pick him apart because his defense is lacking i think. Floyd is pac's biggest threat IMO. Also side note floyd has fought many opponents bigger than him.
@pildidoboxing Yes you did ignore my comment. Hahaha, soooo you're saying that along with Manny beating Duran, you are saying that Manny could ALSO beat Leonard, Hearns, Trinidad, Robinson and Pernell Whitaker?? Wow. Now I know I'm wasting my time with yet another Manny fan and NOT a BOXING FAN.
@tooblack09 you seem to forget. styles makes fights and SRR and SRL has never fought any one with the defense and brilliant ring generalship of a Floyd Mayweather jr. so you can't really say that those great fighters of yesterday can dominate Pretty Boy Floyd.
Dont like the way Leonard keeps hooking Duran's hands at the wrists between his arm and body....what the hell is that all about???????
Que loco ! ver la publicidad de "invierta en Venezuela"...que tiempos aquellos....!Lol!
@daboxer181 Duran wasn't a boxer, he was a brawler. He just had incredible boxing skills. And I don't think he could beat Floyd Mayweather. But he could probably beat Manny Pacquiao.
rd 4,..duran's countering with the right hurts leonard,.cpl times,.ray holds alot,..still grets off a cpl fast shots, but doesnt faze duran,.ray even pushes roberto into the ropes but duran fights off em pretty well..a combo right left right from duran whom then turns ray around,....durans round,..after 4 i have it duran 3 one even..or 40-37
en esa epoca era mas pelea👊 y menos dinero, ahora es mas show, menos pelea y mas dinero😫💲💲
@TA152H01 It had nothing to do with scoring for Duran because he was moving forward. Duran was outscoring, out boxing and pushing him all over the ring. Yes, Roberto won the fight, stop with the manlove of Ray, it has your brain seeing things.
Duran vs Leonard &Padilla....I hope Padilla is in a hole in the desert somewhere...
Leonard is hurt, Leonard is hurt!
@eugenemcgirt
Gimme a break. So because Floyd Sr. used the shoulder roll, Leonard would've been just as successful against Floyd Jr.? Floyd would've been a little too smart for Duran, and I believe that is the only fair comparison because Floyd Jr. is a natural 130lber. as is Duran. Just the fact that you bring Floyd's name into an argument involving natural 147lbers. shows you how good Floyd Jr. is.
mayweather offered mosley a fight in 2002 mosley declined saying he wants to spend time with his family and fought wright instead
@bertelliish It's just my opinion. It's not really "truth."
Leanard hanging on for life and got away with it
@MrBoxinganalyst Whatever. I can live with a non objective "Manny analyst" calling me a Manny hater. Again, I'm going with my head and not my heart. I gave him the edge on beating some fighters I mentioned but not against legendary fighters. If I did, people would call me a one-sided Manny fanatic.
as angelo dundee said listen closely judas they will never be another ali or another sugar ray leonard period ok judas chongo never now angelo got to see them all big praise from the best trainer of all time now listen i use run with delohoya at garfield high school and was close to shane mosely didnt have a chance angainst ray you need learn about boxing tell who u see train and were
not only that but look at when the rematch took place...sugar ray knew duran baloons up to 200lbs unbetween fights and drains himself to get into fighting shape so he got the rematch within months so duran wudnt be able to cope with the weight loss. all those diuretics duran took to drop down in weight fucked with him in the rematch and he quit cuz of the cramps and headache
people who say pac is better then duran need to stop it. duran is a different animal to pac. even roach said duran would beat pacquiao
and shane said his teeth need fixin to so that is 2 times he did the duckin
Yeah Tommy is too big for him. Not sure how Pacquiao would be able to compete with him. Hagler I don't mention because he was at 160 and Pacquiao has never and will never fight at that weight.... Leonard I think would make Pacquiao a KO victim. It would be competitive, though. Duran I think would either win a close decision or stop Pacquiao late in an amazing fight.
Lol Duran was digging
