Even though the 135i is the sought after car , the 128i is definitely a rewarding car. I wish BMW would have took this engine and put it into the MINI JCWs , that inline 6 is so good
Mister B you have an amazing track tool!!! the build was so thoughtfully pieced together and dang what a great price you snagged it for🧨. A year ago my 135i was written off in an accident and in a week or so. I have its replacement coming,,,another 135i. to be quite honest with you, I care nothing about speed, and I’m looking to put together a car that is on the rails for the street. I appreciate your knowledge and I’m wondering if you could let me know how I can go about a 245 or 255 square set up on the car? The car I’m getting is fitted with ST XTS suspension and front M3 control, arms along with m3 rear subframe bushings. thank you in advance
I think the 128i was a usa thing. Europe called it the 130i. The 125i is an electronically restricted 128i / 130i which can be easily removed. So i think the 125i msport is the best buy.

Great review! Im from the UK so we have the 125i. I am split between this and 135i, but I hear that the n54 & 55 can be quite unreliable. So no seeing this I'm swaying more towards the n52
I've had an N52 125i since February and I absolutely love the thing. Been lucky enough to spend a good amount of time behind the wheel of an M340i with the B58 (turbo 3.0) and although mine would be left in the dust by it, the sound and feeling of a big N/A engine cannot quite be matched. I was giggling like a school girl driving around in the M340i in Sport+ with the windows down... but the first time I red-lined my 125i honestly beat that feeling, and 4 months later I still feel the same way. And although mine is only rated at 215hp at the moment, I am fully intending on remapping it to the full ~265hp potential, which personally is in spitting distance of the turbocharged engines... Mine is absolutely golden too- 77k on the clock and it hasn't burnt a drop of oil in the last 5k, just passed it's MOT with one advisory (suspension, which I knew when I bought it, and will be sorted soon with an independent). I can't speak for the N54/N55, and most the things I love about mine will carry over (plus a load of extra torque and power) but the extra reliability worries were too much for me unfortunately.
@@e28_m5 has the water pump in yours been replaced or any of the other common engine problems? I'm looking at buying one privately at 80k, but there's not much history of any of the common issues being sorted
Even with non-m-sport package, pure base model, there's a lot to enjoy. Have had a base 128i since Feb. As far as preparing the car for autocross/trackdays, did you upgrade the radiator or add oil cooling? Also, what did you do with camber or otherwise to fit the wider wheels?
So I need to figure this out with more track days, but so far coolant doesn't seem phased at all, oil gets a bit hot, I was seeing temps of 270 F on a 50 F day. Yes -4.0 in the front, and I have to run a small 8mm spacer to get it to clear the shocks
Yes, I too wanna know the mods that got you 240 to the wheels, as well, how did you drop the weight by roughly 300lbs, considering the 128i weighs about 3200 from the factory. As far as power mods, I'm guessing you're running intake, header, cat back exhaust and tune. And I scored my 2011 128i with sport pack for $6500!
@@towers3372 yeah, thats about the going rate in Seattle as well. Not to say you cant get them for less, but its not often. Yeah, im happy about my purchase. Of course, i want the 135i now, but who doesnt? Lol
Your car looks very flat when it corners, mine is like a boat on base suspension. I got mine for 12k out the door with 70k miles. I got my 128i because of your video I’ve watched a few months back. It’s a good platform to build on, but stock, especially base car is underwhelming if you push it, but it’s still fun. I’m currently researching what suspension to go with.
What year is this puppy? You never said it. I’ve been thinking about getting this car for years. I think he just pushed me over the edge. I have a 2011 328i with a sports package and manual transmission. Absolutely love my car but this would really take it to another level. I’m tempted to find a way to trade mine in and get the 128 What is your opinion on the convertible version? Obviously the hardtop is stiffer suspension and tighter but would love your perspective on that. Thanks man!
Fantastic video. Can you comment on shifter feel? I'm hoping to grab a 128i as my next car, but coming from a BRZ (and currently owning a S2000) shifter feel is a big deal to me. Also, any problems with rust if the car is winter-driven?
Nah I got a 128i vert and I’ve gone through 3 winters with it no rust as long as u keep the under cover that comes with the car stock, great car if ur fine with 225-280hp sadly I want more power so I’m looking for a 135i or a good priced 235i xDrive.
@@slimgeorgia Hi there, I never got a reply so I went with the app Bimmercode and bimmerlink and I brought a Veepeak bluetooth connection from Amazon, works great, hope it helps
The 1 series with the m-sport package is possibly the best used BMW value available. It's the most pure drivers car BMW has released in years. However it's not perfect, and there's one very important thing to check for if you're looking to buy one. The oil filter housing gasket WILL start leaking on the N52, causing oil to leak onto the drive belts and radiator hoses. This can cause a few problems, the worst is the belts slip off and get pulled into the engine, causing engine damage. Best thing to do if you buy one of these used is to have the oil filter housing gasket replaced. If you're unable to do the work yourself, it should run you about $1500 if you include new drive belts and radiator hoses with the work. Worth doing it all at once IMO.
Check and see if you have oil residue on the belts, hoses, and the engine area around the housing. If your finger gets gunk in it, then you should have it looked at.

Mods?? I’ve never seen a n52 past 245 whp. I’d love to know so I can do it to my ‘13 128i
I’m in Utah too with an FBO 135i. It’s wild! Such a fun car!
This was a great review man, there isn’t much content done on this spec 1 series, so thanks.
Awesome video, well thought out and reasoned. I love the autocross and track perspectives.
Most accurate description of my 2013 e82…MarioKart‼️
Loved the video. Props for the e82!
*claps* I'm on the lookout for one of those bad boys, and around 6 months in my research, this video is one of the best reviews i have checked so far, well done sir! *claps*
I have to agreed. I have a 135i and is difficult to enjoy the power on legal roads..
Just got first one so I'm looking at all the videos and finding out Ll the Specs it has. Bought mine for 9000 with only 64000 miles on hopefully it will run me for a while. My first luxury car so I'm going to cherish it indeed.
Super informative! looking into getting one myself. Thank you for all the tips/info!
Did you end up getting one?
really nice review! just bought an e82 123d stage 2, loving the steering feel and dynamics of the car!
Great Video , I going to try to Trade in my much more expensive expensive C7 loaded Vette tomorrow and they have 09 128i that I was thinking about about buying but it’s an Auto . But now you have my attention and I might start searching for a standard model . I’ve never had a Beemer , a couple of Porsches and all kinds of other stuff but I’m trading down to to get rid of my pymt book . Your car looks great 👍!
Car looks and sounds gorgeous. Best 128i video by far. Mod list video coming soon??
Even though the 135i is the sought after car , the 128i is definitely a rewarding car. I wish BMW would have took this engine and put it into the MINI JCWs , that inline 6 is so good
Yes I would’ve LOVED to see this engine in a Mini, maybe save the turbo 6 from the 135i for the JCWs lol just for fun
Slicktop + Msport + Manual? This is a unicorn!
want a cayman s but will most likely get one of these because of bang for buck and explore supercharger options
Great video, makes me miss my e92 328i
Great car. I have the same model and color and... SLICK TOP! Awesome video, thanks.
Mine is an 125i 2013, I didn't know that I can get more from it. Good to know it :)
128i didn’t have the 3 stage intake manifold. So the 130i and 125i (latter with a tune) makes more power. The 130i also has different gearing.
Just recently bought my 128i 6MT for 8k! 86k miles! Would love to know what bolt ons you recommend to boost power and drivability! Thanks so much love the review and love being apart of the one series fam
How’s it been for u?
@@stuartholt2299 Absolutely loved that car. Ended up selling it after a year and got a 340i with all the goodies. Still wish I kept it around tho, miss the manual 🥲
Cool video and nice car. I have a 128i as well. Not quite ready to get into competitive autocross yet but slowly looking to button up the suspension from stock. Car came with the BMW Performance Suspension. I’ve already added M3 front control arms and M3 rear subframe bushings. Looking now to put the Bilstein B8s in to go with the Performance Suspension Springs.
Rush kinda pricey but I would do the following, M3 steering rack, limited slip and widest square set up with good rubber.
I have a 328i cabrio with the same engine. Beautiful machines. Im also doing about 240 wheel.
I absolutely love your build..:.I have a fairly stocked 135i and love the 🚗…I don’t care much for power but plan to focus on the suspension and tire combo this coming summer….I am planning to put the ohlin RT Package on my car and I would love to run a 18inch 255 Tire package……. In your expert opinion if I run Adjustable camber plates oh without rolling my fenders in the front do you believe I would still rub? Also when your video you mentioned you have an adjustable lower control arm bushing. Which brand would that be and do you think it’s necessary Part to have along with the camber plates in order to I have zero rubbing of the front fenders??
Again congrats on a great build
Real nice review. thanks!
I enjoyed the scenery
It is such a beautiful car . Funny you said it's like the modern E46 coupe, because I was saying it reminds me of the E46 coupe. Like a facelifted facelift model Similar size range just with modern technology and I loved this car since it came out.
dope video 👍 I want a 128i so bad
ahhhhhh.......you have the UNICORN! 128i ///M Sport 6MT Slicktop!
I have a '08 128i 6MT Sport.....still a great chassis, but I wish it was a ///M Sport Slicktop!
Great video. Everything was explained well. Here we are in 2022. Is a relatively low mileage 128i worth the price in today's market? Have these appreciated to crazy prices like everything else has?
Great review thanks
Ok but that view of the mountains😍
I know you swapped your seats but i think the biggest selling point of the m package is the sport seats
Not a twat!😂 I have the 2011 128i, and 2021 330 but I love still drive the 128i more it’s just fits me more. I’m at 127,000 and still no issues.
Dayum! Good vid. I have the chance to buy one of these for $14K @ 55K miles. Thinking about it!!
i literally bought one two months ago for the same price/mileage
I have 135i same silver color.Like you say, people think you are wealthy etc.Got mine for for just under 7000 US here in New Zealand.Win win.Spent what I saved on bolt ons.Inlets, outlets, catless downpipes, intake,MHD.Blistein shocks,m3 control arms, intercooler. It would take down so many cars for the money.Real sleeper.Have looked down a few times at speedo and seen 220km gone shit.150mph not hard.😀
Having ample track time in an E36 M3, it definitely sounds like one. Evidently I'm looking to fill the void of no M3.
Bro looks like a giant beside that car..
Hey man what year is your 128i? Wondering if there’s a specific year that has the best reliability a response would be greatly appreciated !
I think I saw someone say after 2009 is good but not too sure
I'm a few years late to this video and I don't know if you're active but how does your 128i not have a sunroof? It seems like every 128i has a sunroof.
I think I’ve seen ONE with a sunroof after looking at them online over the last week. I’m buying a convertible 2013 128i in dark red early next week-that’s the ultimate sunroof! 😂👍
Boys and girls, replace your vanos solenoids. If it’s over 150,000km put a new bmw set in that engine. Its expensive but you will thank me later! Full power like the day it left the factory.
What is a Vanos Solenoids?
What do you mean by a new set?
@@andrewnunnes you will need to order 2 solenoids.
This car got some proper mods!!! I like it
These are really cute, and cheap too. If I can’t find an E46 im definitely gonna co consider getting one of these.
I'm looking at buying one privately at 80k, but there's not much history of any of the common issues being sorted
people always saying the 1 series rear seats are unusable but they actually seem like they are more roomy than the 3 series when you sit in one
Depends on why year 3 series... my 1 series def has less space in the back then any 07 and up 3 series
swagsession1 the one I sat in was a convertible 335is so maybe because it was a convertible
How did you manage 240hp at the wheels? 3 stage disa and tune only adds 35 hp
Love my 128i with mods fun and I got mine cheap!
I have a G35 now looking into getting a second car the 128i how does it maintain any problems with it ?
Even with non-m-sport package, pure base model, there's a lot to enjoy. Have had a base 128i since Feb. As far as preparing the car for autocross/trackdays, did you upgrade the radiator or add oil cooling? Also, what did you do with camber or otherwise to fit the wider wheels?
So I need to figure this out with more track days, but so far coolant doesn't seem phased at all, oil gets a bit hot, I was seeing temps of 270 F on a 50 F day. Yes -4.0 in the front, and I have to run a small 8mm spacer to get it to clear the shocks
@@BESIMXCARS gotcha. thanks for the info. curious what'll happen with oil temps with more track days.
Totally love the 128i!
Nice Informative Video!
1 Question though, what is the app that you are using on your phone?
What mods do you have!
Also I have a 128i m sport 6mt. Would you say the diff is a must have? I don’t use it for autocross or track days
Dallas Bagley that’s a steal! I’m in cali and they’re holding steady 8-11k
@@towers3372 yeah, thats about the going rate in Seattle as well. Not to say you cant get them for less, but its not often. Yeah, im happy about my purchase. Of course, i want the 135i now, but who doesnt? Lol
@@dallasbagley dude congrats! how many miles did it have at purchase? I wish for the 135i too lmao
@@towers3372 like 87k
What is the usual cost for the water pump part for the N52/N54 engine? Seriously considering selling my 4 door Toyota to live my best life 😂
Your car looks very flat when it corners, mine is like a boat on base suspension.
Thanks man!
7:40 .. no truer words!
So good! Love mine
2:40 This BMW weighs 200 pounds less than the new 2025 MINI coupe.
Besim very very very nice video mate! What's the year?
awesome video I also love my 128i hey what app is you using?
I have that question also
@@slimgeorgia Hi there, I never got a reply so I went with the app Bimmercode and bimmerlink and I brought a Veepeak bluetooth connection from Amazon, works great, hope it helps
What kind of exhaust do you have on it? Sounds very good. (I have a 2013 128i as well... looking for a good sports exhaust...). Thanks.
any suspension work? I've done m front control arms and m rear subframe bushings. but still a bit of slop I the rear end I'd like to eliminate.
At what miles of the car should that work be done on?
Check and see if you have oil residue on the belts, hoses, and the engine area around the housing. If your finger gets gunk in it, then you should have it looked at.
looking at a 2011 , Florida owned , one owner, mint condition ! no accidents with 59000 miles , he's asking $8,900 for it. how do you feel about the price ??
Did you get it??

What are the maintenance costs though..? It's terrifying me
Not bad for the 128i because it’s a n/a 3.0l straight six while the 135i has the n54 which is more prone to higher maithence costs
Buy a warranty. I bought one and also purchased warranty.
I just bought a 2011 128i from my lil niece the car has about 87k Mi. the serpentina belt rip... the dealer wanted 2.5k to fix it... the car turno on and run but havent run cause the belt. and there is a mess of oil all over the vale comer and front engine. any advise.
