  • The original George Duke band: Josie James (singer), Lynn Davis (singer), Byron Miller (bassist) and especially Sheila E. (percussion) are remembering their wonderful time with George Duke during the 70s. Classic albums such as "Reach For It" ('77), "Don't Let Go" ('78), "Master Of The Game" ('79) and of course "Brazilian Love Affair" ('79) are dealing with lots of different styles as Fusion, Disco, Brazil and P-Funk. "Just like a canvas with different colors", as George used to say ...

I remember seeing these guys in 1978 in Chicago with Rose Royce,Faze O and Mother's Finest...I'll never forget it George Duke was having some technical problems with his keyboards and a young Sheila E. soloed on congas for about 15 minutes it was awesome still one of the best shows I've ever seen....

Yeah, this band was amazing. I saw them in January 1978 in Hanover (Germany) as a support act of Joan Armatrading who was the main act. Can you believe that?! I remember Sheila E. but also Byron Miller, Ricky Lawson (I guess), Napoleon Murphy Brock of course, and background singer Josie James. They just had 45 min. but anyway it was big fun for everybody!! It was the period when the setlist contains songs from the albums "Reach For It", "Don't Let Go" and "Follow The Rainbow".
ps. In 2010 I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Duke. During that long interview we also talked briefly about that 1978 show which he commented as an "unhappy support combination". In other words, it didn't fit musically speaking.

tonartification Because allegedly the band members were giving him problems. That’s why only one of them went on to consistently work with him for 10 years. There are quite a few stories that come with the George Duke Band as well as their lineup changes. I’m surprised none has written a book about it. Sheila talked about some of it in her book but she never went in-depth about the band’s inner turmoil

It took me at least three months to be able to listen one of his songs. Just listening the word duke, the word, not the name, was enough to trigger emotional feelings.
"words are things, put two together and make people wanna go to war...''
In this case just one word - Duke - it's enough to move people on different emotional status. Why is that? Most of us have never even seen that man from close. But we've listened to his music - and of all the musicians who have always played with him - and we've learned to get acquainted with him through his music and his ''stolen'' smiles, words and jokes, captured randomly from interviews. I don't recall ever being so sad for the loss of an "unknown", not "familiar"....friend!

I had the pleasure of seeing George Duke on tour in Europe not long before his passing, with my husband, also a musician and a fan of his for over 30 years. Not only did we bob our heads and dance our nearly kneecaps off that night, but in meeting him post-performance, were blessed and honored to find a man who was kind, jovial, and engaging as he was musically innovative and pioneering. What a beautiful thing to find this portion of his memorial and hear such wonderful memories shared by his peers. My husband and I carry that concert evening with George Duke as one of the special shared moments of our lives; thank you for sharing this clip.

I believe there are some with defective You Tube displays. They don’t have a thumbs up icon. It’s either not on their screen or it’s not in the mind but either way they don’t know what it is or like to like or love anything in life. Sad!
