Being from where the Animals are from but younger, I've never heard this song before.
He's describing the childhood of children from the North East of England, my childhood in the 1970's.
Thanks for letting me hear a song I've never heard before

It's also exactly like the childhood my dad described being a teen in Los Angeles in the 40s. He was 12 when he started smoking but everything else sounds the same.

Chas Chandler was the bass player in the Animals. He went over to New York and was blown away by a guitarist he heard in a club. He brought him over to the UK and recruited a drummer and bass player and that was how Jimi Hendrix and the Experience came into being. Eric Burdon and Jimi had a very close friendship for years. Interesting how things and people are connected.

"When I Was Young" is a song released in early 1967 by Eric Burdon and The Animals; it was written by five of the band members - Eric Burdon (vocals), Barry Jenkins (drums), John Weider (guitar/violin), Vic Briggs (guitar), and Danny McCulloch (bass) - and was the first release to feature this lineup."

Another cool psychedelic song by The Animals is Sky Pilot - hope you guys hit it sometime! If you do, listen to the long version. It's a haunting anti-war song.

Definitely only listen to the long version of sky pilot if you only listen to the short radio version you are cheating yourself
Other long songs that you must review is Time has come again, the end by the doors, going home by the Stones, during the psychedelic era bands would put out 10,12 minute songs
Amber the best way to get the psychedelic experience is to turn out all lights in your room only have blacklight posters on smoke a joint use headphones and zone out to the music.I did 55 years ago 😊

Back in the mid 1960s I'd hear my brother playing his albums in his room like every other red blooded American teenager (Boy or Girl) and at 9 yrs. old, really began to appreciate the differences in the different artists and Bands. You begin to form a liking or dislike for certain kinds of music and those that perform it on tv and radio. I became a big fan of Eric Burden, because he was sort of a Bad boy, compared to The Beatles, or even the Stones. Just listen to the lyrics of the songs he sang. They were rarely about loving his girl or Romance. They were edgy and in your face. He's a great artist who loved the Blues and the early rockers of the 50s.

Eric Burdon is amazing. From early on with Please Don't Let Me be Misunderstood all the way to when he joined WAR and created one of the greatest Albums of all time Black Mans Burdon. Along the way he hit the psychedelic movement with Spill the Wine and Sky Pilot but his version of Paint It Black on Black Man's Burdon was awesome along with Spirit and every track on it was great

Like many on here are saying you have to listen to Sky Pilot (long version) 1968, with Bagpipes playing a leading role on the song.
The first time Bagpipes were used in a rock tune and the English parliament wanted the song banned for this reason?. Eric's voice never sounded better.
All these groups from the 60's that left a mark of longevity, they were so talented and inspired to outdo each other on levels of what was next on the hit parade.
Just imagine that most of these groups bar a few never really reached no1 status with more than 1 or 2 songs because of the strength of what was being released week in week out for near 8 years, by so many artists, constantly changing and keeping up with trends from 1962 to 1970.
They all deserve a special place on the mantle piece of history for leaving a legacy that will never be forgotten, appreciated more because of all the video and musical platforms that are out there showing their worth.
Thank you to all those that keep the faith going.

The Animals were barely post-adolescent when they first hit in the 60s, but they always sounded like blues guys of the 30s. Wise and cool way beyond their years.

So a bit of a history lesson. Everything you have heard of the band before today was 'Animals Mark 1' . The songs were R&B classics produced by super producer of the time Mickie Most. After a few years, the bands keyboard/piano player Alan Price quit the band (couldn't cope with flying if I remember correctly). He was a major part of the Animals sound. Burdon and Price had a major falling out. At which point, Burdon sacks everyone and starts afresh with new bandmates, producer etc. and evolves the band into this new psychadelic phase which is what you are hearing today.

Great reaction to this fantastic, haunting song. I see lots of great suggestions for more Animals here in the comments. Sky Pilot is my favorite, but nobody has mentioned River Deep, Mountain High yet. Please listen to their version of that one.

This was actually NOT The Animals - the original band - but rather this was Eric Burdon's version of The Animals that he put together after the original band broke up. This outfit was known as Eric Burdon And The Animals. Whereas the original band was probably the first band to incorporate psychedelia in their sound, Eric Burdon And The Animals was full-on Psychedelic Rock. You definitely need to listen to their amazing epics, such as "Sky Pilot," "River Deep, Mountain High" and "To Love Somebody." Eric Burdon And The Animals was am amazing band; the next logical step in Tbe Animals' sound.

Always thought this one was very Doorsish. You should check out David Johansen's "Animals Medley" live. Such a great tribute for We Gotta Get Out of This Place, Don't Bring Me Down and It's My Life. 3 more of their great songs.

Love this song! First time I heard it was on the premiere of the TV series "Tour of Duty" (about Vietnam) in 1987, when the unit boarded helicopters to be dropped into a hot Landing Zone (under fire). The music of the era has since been replaced, but I the complete series with the original music to enjoy.

That's an electric sitar and a violin doing that main riff. The Animals were one of the very few bands to undergo an almost complete lineup change and change in musical style and still stay successful. Eric Burdon was the only remaining member from the orignal band, and they went more 'psychedelic' in 1967, but still cranked out several more hits.

I can still remember where I was when the DJ announced this new Animals song to be played for the 1st time in Hartford CT.
It changed my whole perspective of what Rock was. Hartford was in some ways similar to the hard British cities Eric sang about.
Note, I was at an Army-Navy store to buy my 1st pairs of Seafarers Bellbottom jeans, same that the US navy wore, store had the radio playing.

I can't imagine what it was like for artists from the British Invasion era growing up while their country was engaged in a war being fought all around them with their Fathers being forced to be soldiers as the song refers to ~or the very real possiblity of a bomb landing on you or trying to survive amid all the destruction afterwards
