I worked in the schooling system and I must say that a great number of those who fail do so from their own choice. They come to school to defend their ignorance. Any educated person is an untruder into their world., be it the teacher, the "nerd" in the classroom, the ones who are their bosses or the ones who run the country. Self-pity and playing the victim card is all those idiots can really do. Please forget that "migrant" card. The most extreme blockheads I had to face were the ones from a pure German background who live in areas that have the highest percentage of rightwing voters. Years after I had left that place of misery I came across articles that ranked that town "top" when it came to the amount of school dropouts: 25% of the school levers had not achieved any grade at all. and, once again, we talk about a town with a very, very low level of immigrants among its population.

The big question is what people consider happiness to be which is a question of expectations. Knowing the northern European mind set I guess if you ask people up there whether they are happy they will tell you why they are content with their lives. Being content and satisfied with what you have is probably as close to happiness as you can get. The problem with very many people in the western world is that they always want more of everything and therefore are never content.

When it's the middle of Winter, it's snowing and very cold the Finns still sit outside coffee shops making the most of the limited daylight, at least in Helsinki. If the Finns aren't drinking coffee in the middle of Winter they eat ice cream.

It is not that cold in Finland. The summers are often too hot. The climate in Northern Finland is colder, but central and Southern Finland are warmer. The golf stream affects the weather in Finland and makes it milder than it should be. The northen third of Finland is inside the polar circle.

I had a friend in Canada who grew up in Northern Ontario (Sudbury if you must know) as a first-generation Finn. Most of his neighbors were Finnish or came from there. He said the first thing their families did when they arrived at their homesite, before building the house, was to build the sauna.
The weather is not that bad. The sun is shining in the wintertime too. It is not so cold all the time. The Winters might be different every year. Forinstance this year not so much Frost, but a lot of snow. The same weather appears in the countries of the same latitude like Sweden and Norway. Summers are so lovelly and beautiful. Sometimes too hot like last summer.
I’m a Finn, and I think you are quite on spot with your three points here. The first two are easier to grasp, whereas the third has a lot to do with the Finnish character, formed by climate and weather conditions, as well as politics and history. The Finnish history just isn’t an easy one. This combined with the harsh natural conditions has shaped a certain national mentality, which might not be so easy for “outsiders” to get a hold on. EDIT: This character can be seen in that Finns rarely like to make such a big fuzz about themselves, and they perhaps might come across as a bit serious and reserved, but if it would turn out you’re in need of help, they will be there for you. - But anyway: thanks for pointing out these three things, like I said, I really believe you’re onto something here. I get the "sauna makes you happy" bit. It's the only luxury item I really wanna have, wherever I end up living. My own sauna. 😌 I'd use that thing every second day.
When I was in Finland to visit a friend (whom I met while she went to school in Germany - yeah, they really have a talent for languages) I did buy a book with the german title "Finnische Reise" by Wolfram Dufner in Helsinki. Dufner was as a diplomat in Finland during the cold war and describes his time there. I did kinda fall in love with that country and it's people. Even more so after reading that book. It did often accompany me when I did travel. Even I became aware about the high suicide rate, I still believe that it is a happy country all in all, which has a lot to offer. I for myself know it only at summer times with it's long bright nights which is very much the opposite to how people describe the winter there. But you have to pay good attention to figure the real full beauty of suomi. For the simple eye it might seem boring at the first glance. But who knows about the history and when you learn to know it's people will be fascinated. Oh, and don't forget about Kalevala. For me it seems this myth, epic, culture is also part of what makes suomi what it is.
At the shortest day the daylight is about 5h 30 min in Helsinki. So the sun still goes up above the horizon. Helsinki is in the south of Finland where (I think) live about 90% of the finish population. And in summer there is the opposite: very long days.

@@cinderellaandstepsisters You got me on the suicide… the Wikipedia chart really sees Finland not in the ruling 10 countries, with a scale of 15,3 suicides per 100.000, with Lesotho leading the list with 72,4 and Antigua and Barbuda with 0,4 being last. So it seems of all the countries given, Finland ranks 25th place. The alcohol problem on the other hand seems on the rise again. After having changed the alcohol law 2008 and a decline of alcohol related problems in the following 10 years another change of the alcohol law 2018 seems to lead to an increase in alcohol related problems. This data is from 2020, perhaps something has changed in the last two years, this is left for me to investigate. Anyway… much love and no worries!

Perhaps that's the reason? The unhappy people commit suicide and only the happy people remain. And alcohol even increases their happiness!

The 1st Lithuania, the 2 nd Russia and the 3 rd South Korea.
Also Finland's alcohol consumption is not that high. It has gone drasticly down in 10 years. Watch the video "Country alcohol consumption comparison."
In Europe the highest alcohol consumption countries are: The 1st Moldova, the 2 nd Lithuania, the 3rd Chechia and the 4th Germany.
Finland is likely in the middle even under.
Forinstance Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, France, Belgium, Poland, Serbia, Belarus, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Hungary, Cypros, Portugal, UK, Ireland etc. are ahead of Finland.

You got me on the suicide… the Wikipedia chart really sees Finland not in the ruling 10 countries, with a scale of 15,3 suicides per 100.000, with Lesotho leading the list with 72,4 and Antigua and Barbuda with 0,4 being last. So it seems of all the countries given, Finland ranks 25th place.
The alcohol problem on the other hand seems on the rise again. After having changed the alcohol law 2008 and a decline of alcohol related problems in the following 10 years another change of the alcohol law 2018 seems to lead to an increase in alcohol related problems. This data is from 2020, perhaps something has changed in the last two years, this is left for me to investigate.
