Morten Harket: greatest male vocalist ever recorded. 'Scoundrel Days': one of the greatest albums of all-time. Univers Esthétiques is right; we need to view Dereck review track #8 'The Weight Of The Wind' (please!).
EPIC song and a fantastic album opener with Morten's voice delivering this withsuch tension and desperation that gives me chills each time i listen to it even after all those decades. No man can sing this better than him!
First of all...lyrically this is Paul's best, the pictures he is painting with words is just extraordinary. Then there's the arrangement and the mixing - how Morten's voice is worked into the stereo space and the processed voice layers panning from left to right at certain points. And Morten is just giving everything, it's raw, it's passionate to a degree that surpasses any other a-ha song. it's a goddamn masterpiece.
For me Scoundrel Days always was a studio song though. The belting and rythem of his voice was never matched on a live performance I saw. Epic track...

Spot on description! The building desperation is palpable in the last verse. The sister track, The Weight of the Wind, is also quite accomplished imo
@@JesperHellvik Hell yeah, a different sequencing would knock it out of the ballpark, e.g. Scoundrel Days / The Swing Of Things / I've Been Losing You / The Weight Of The Wind / Manhattan Skyline / October / This Alone Is Love (original version) / Soft Rains Of April
Definitely one of my big favorites from A-ha. Morten’s voice is legendary. One would have to kill his voice before killing him. 😄I always put this one on repeat. It brings me great sensations and it transports me to places with a nostalgic, pleasant feeling. I think I feel kind of addicted to those sounds and sensations. Since I was a kid back in the early 90’s it has been one of my favs.
This song is absolutely amazing and never received any praise or radio play here in the U.S. I was a junior in HS when this album was released and that summer it ruled my Walkman player. I'm glad that you finally got around to reviewing it for all of us.
So much POWER in this song! Incredible singing by Morten and beautiful melody. It reminds me so much of the 80's. Remember how I listen to the song with my walkman (!), laid down in my bed and was dreaming that I was the vocalist :)
Oh man.. I bought at the time quite expensive Sony Ealkaman Professional C-casette player so that I could listen all my favorite CD's from the tapes, and this song still gives me shivers 'cos Morten's voice was one of the best ever.
'Cut my wrist on a bad thought' is a brilliant lyric. I totally get what it means. And it seems we are now also living in scoundrel days. One of my favourite A-Ha tracks.
@@tristramcoffin926 Sorry it's taken so long to answer. It's quite dark, but I think that the lyric is referencing harming yourself, but instead of using a razor blade, you are using negative thoughts. Hope this makes some sense.
Scoundrel Days, at last ! Thanks to those who advised you for this incredible song. A new and determining step in your discovery of A-ha ! And thank you Dereck
Great reaction! Thank you! This song is epic! Its chorus is powerful both musically and lirically speaking. It had such impact on me when I heard it for the first time. Unforgettable.
I bought this album (on cassette) when it was released in 1986 and it feels like it's a part of me now .. part of my history. Every track is jaw dropping. Mortons voice is just so good. But for me 'Scoundrel Days' is the best song A-Ha ever recorded and i still can't understand to this day why they never released it as a single because i'm sure if would have gone top 5 ..if not number 1 in the u.k. charts.
Amazing song. The first time I heard it I wanted to wake up myself with it every morning. And I did ! I even bought a CD alarm clock just for it at the time. So many found memories of this song. ;)
Sadly it was the recordlabel that dictated way to much of what singles to be released and what kind of image A-ha were supposed to have. The recordlabel insisted on keeping A-ha has a boyband and have that image, something that A-ha refused to do. In the end A-ha gave up on the US market becasue of this.
One of the best male singers ever by far... His range is ridiculous and he doesnt lose his power nor in the lower parts nor in the upper highs that even some sopranos would struggle.

One of their best Songs, name of the Album, but was never released as a Single and we fans never understood that. A-ha, or rather the record company, made a lot of mistakes when it came to selecting the single releases
Yes, thank you... finally Scoundrel Days a classic... please do Swing of Things and Out of Blue Comes Green. Aha is so underrated. They aren't just about Take on Me, they have so many amazing songs.
Very well written song, excellent lyrics, and some lovely tempo and lifts through the duration of it. A-ha in their hayday pumped out some fab pop songs. Still in the shadows of Sun Alwaya Shines On TV though. That was, for me, the most memorable song they made
I came across a years-old comment somewhere else on UA-cam, and it's so good that I'm taking the liberty of sharing parts of it. The comment was written by KapteinNemo. In my opinion he hit the bulls eye. I guess the word "appreciate" is not the right word. It should have been acknowledge or something like that. KapteinNemo is probably not English speaking. He might be Norwegian: "...A-ha has quite a few stunning songs in that "Greatest Ever" category. Scoundrel Days is one, and through proper re-appreciation of the song (during a 6 hour drive by car) , I have realized that it might even be the greatest of their greatest songs.... "And see, as our lives are in the making... We believe through the lies and the hating, that LOVE GOES FREE!". And if you understand these lyrics, you will understand the choice of performing Scoundrel Days at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Contextualized in current times, what A-ha says is "stand back, get perspective, and appreciate what is happening in our lifetime - there are people that, through lies and hating, claim that their love (through their life-style, political system, religion, etc) is the "greatest love". A-ha continues by saying that "We" believe "through" these lies and hating, that LOVE GOES FREE - Love (and even Godly love) does not belong to any particular religion or identifiable grouping, its FREE!(Note that A-ha does not refer to anybody specifically - they keep it "universal" by saying "..and I'm close to calling out their names, ..." Wow, just genius by one of the greatest bands ever! ..."and see as our lives are in the making, that we, with A-ha, believe through these lies and the hating, that love goes free!"
Needless to say lyrics to this are something i can't discribe. It's one of the songs that when i listened to those first times it was like a shot.Got me wet eyed.
This was my first a-ha album. When I was a kid at camp I had to go to the infirmary after dinner every day to get my medicine. The guy who worked in there was part of Columbia House tape club and they had sent him this album bc he didn't send in the card. He didn't want it so he gave the tape to me. I went back to my cabin and listened to it and a-ha became one of my favorite bands. I am positive I have listened to this album over 100 times.

Loved your reaction. Clearly you are so invested into music as I am. Music is everything for me: it balances my emotions. It gives me energy. It comforts me when I am down or lost. It lifts me up whenever I have been down. I can enjoy pretty much any music but Aha been special to me since I grew up with the band. This album, which I had on cassette, was with me on walkman when I was working long hours at the farm. Doing kinda boring monotonous work. It cut the hours down that's for sure. And I got to hear all the songs. Some needed a bit of time to grow on me, but now looking back it's perhaps my favourite Aha album. Which is a hard pick with all their great releases over many decades.
Gracias por tu videos y música de a-ha para que escuche otra canción hermosa de a-ha y escuche su bella voz,música y letra 💖💖 que no son solo Take on me
Derek was most likely reading the lyrics while listening to the song, he does that often lately; when he has heard a song previously, he will say it during or before the reaction.
A-Ha's curse was the lead singers' good looks in my opinion. They attracted the wrong crowd (horny teens) and didn't really get the recognition they deserved from a musical perspective.
This song needs to appear on season 5 of Stranger things to really get it out there like Running Up That Hill. Would be an awesome backdrop for a cool chase scene.
While Scoundrel Days is their best track Cry Wolf should've been released to the US 1st as opposed to I've been losing you with a Nile Rodgers remix much like Duran Duran did for the Reflex.
Perhaps it was their looks that made them a flop in Usa? Wham and DuranDuran had much better looking men, which made them hard to compete with? Or Usa just didn't like their songs, just that one video ?
