- This video shares the story of Kiwi and Tiki, two older and bonded black capped conures living with their humans Lauren and Jeff, who decide to pursue freeflight with us.
Although we don't normally take on such small freeflight students, Dave had an initial consultation with them and decided they'd be the right fit for the course. To find out if you and your bird can free fly with us, book a freeflight consult!

You know.....I don’t care how many Freeflight videos I watch. I always LOVE THEM! When you have these sit down talks with the birds parents, it’s so informative! For me, watching the birds fly in slow motion, it’s amazing. I can see the birds take the wind, coast with the wind, you can see the birds navigate their flight patterns. It’s just so beautiful to watch. Thank you to all. ❤️NJ❤️

As soon as I got my 2nd bird (cockatiel) i was like "can I freeflight train her? She is so small!" turns out you can basically freefly train any parrot it just takes lots of time. My cockatiel sydney is now happily freeflying outside now. Btw you have inspired me a lot!

I would love to flight train my kakariki. They fly erratically, like galahs, and are a fun sight to watch them do zoomies. One day!
Having a mostly empty desert around sure helps.
With plenty of predators and trees around, free-flight (especially with small birds) can quickly become very problematic, no matter how strong your bond with a bird is. We are now looking for large indoor areas (closed off) that will allow us access.
What can go wrong outside on the desert w these small birds?

I have been wanting a bird for the longest time, however my current environment isn't suitable for one so I must sadly wait. OMG IM SO EXCITED TO FINALLY SEE A BCC ON HERE!!! I got my lil guy 124 days ago and have been dying to teach him free flight! (Unfortunately that’s not possible as of right now because he had a very deep wing clip when I got him and has had overpreening issues since then as well (he even plucked when he got sick when Texas froze)
I’m hoping to get him there at some point :)

Amazing 👏 The 2 babies look like they transformer too along with their parents! They are extremely gorgeous as well! I thought that the mama was so hurt for what she did but im sure they understood why mama did what she did since mama needs to get a great job to afford them a forever lifestyles! 💯
Great info. I have 6 at various ages and levels of training and was hopefully working my way to this but always with some serious doubts about ever taking them into the open. One issue I have in addition to their size and difficulty spotting is that I am red/green color blind and couldn't see them in anything but a while/light background. Lauren and Jeff are my model grail now! They are pioneers for the little parrots!!
This was far too helpful!!! I have a GCC and have been looking for what to do with him, my ultimate goal has been to freefly him so we can take him on vacation, and so that he can have the right to fly around like a normal bird in the wild, and this was so awesome in boosting my confidence that I can actually make that happen. Thanks!!!

@@shinso-kun209 I hope you attain your goal. We just got a baby gcc, 3 days ago. She is confidently flying around our house now, and seems pretty tame to me so far.
She was on a seed/pellet diet that I’m thinking I’ll need to wean her onto pellet only, so that treats will be more enticing. She loves apple and it seems to be the only food she is drawn to fly or come to us for I’m not sure where to go for detailed info to train her to free fly to where we can safely take her outside with our fear of losing her. @birdtricks any videos you can direct me to for step by step instructions would be helpful? She is so sweet and even loves the kids…
The whole bit about grad school was definitely needed for understanding small birds and free flight. Then there's how you try to do the best for your birds, very few people even think about treating their animals well.

Our Gyro is very intelligent as well. And tries hard and she had tons of drive. The spook and bolt concerns me as well, But she does come to me when called. Getting there!!

Some day I’d like to free flight train my quakers and ringneck, they like being outside, but obviously being in a travel cage or a harness is different than being fully outside😂
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience to me. I have a 5 month old Quaker parrot hen. Hopi has toilet trained herself! I noticed she would flap her wings periodically when she sat on my shoulder and felt she was trying to communicate something to me. I tried putting her in her cage when she would do it thinking she might be tired and she pooped straight away. The next time she flapped I put her in again and she pooped straight away again. I gave her a seed as a reward and she hasn't pooped on me since! Every time she flaps her wings I put her in her cage and she poops like clockwork. I am stoked! I haven't had a bird before but she seems extremely intelligent by any species standard... including human haha. Looking forward to flight training her!
Same here! My Quaker Turkey still poops occasionally outside the cage, but he basically trained himself to go back to the cage to poop when he got older (he’s a year and change now).
It’s amazing. I was preparing for a difficult bird that poops everywhere, he’s slightly disabled with his feet, but a total dream. Vocabulary growing by the day, and super affectionate as well as being an exceptional flyer. He hovers, does recall, turns etc.
I want to free fly him so much, but I’m so scared to lose him.

I have one and I’m currently debating free flight training. She’s my best friend and sticks to me like Velcro in the house, but I’m apprehensive she’ll feel the call of the wild and fly off. I’d be so worried if she flew off.

I'm gonna be getting a baby gcc sometime late summer / early fall and I think I'm going to try to free fly train her. I'm currently in school to learn dog training and a lot of those skills can be used with training birds (really any animal. a lot of what they're teaching is used in zoos too) so I'm excited

I'd love to freefly my eclectus but I'm too scared to try teach it on my own so I'll stick to a harness for now. Maybe i could try find a big indoor area to fly him in.
Ours lives outside, we don’t need to take it to the middle of an uninhabited desert. It sits on my shoulder, it forages in the grass, it has two cardinals that come by to look at it. We have thousands of trees around. In my opinion huge difference.
I need some encouragement. I’m receiving some pushback from friends and family for letting my green cheek go on his first free flight.
Maybe an training course would give everyone the level of trust that’s needed ! 🤷♀️
These guys are cute. I have a rescue wild bird and that first step of free flight is the hardest. Are they going to be ok. Are they going to be able to find home. etc etc.. Just gotta have trust in your friend and give him a chance.
I was considering getting either a green wing or African Grey. Do you guys think that the green wing would respond better to flight training? I'm honestly between the two breeds because they're both very intelligent, but I ultimately would want to work with my bird and train them as much as I can (with time, of course). Thanks!
This is so entertaining. Personally I would never be able to free flight train my baby conure in my city. Too many hawks living in my area

Jamie I wanted your opinion. Please❤️. I just got a baby green cheek he was hatched March 25 so he is quite young. I plan on doing all the training stuff you guys teach and I’m gona by your food system book on payday. I want my bird to be able to be the best bird. My question is should I cover his cage. He is in the living room and we do stay quit but he will have his own room in like 2 moths
I have a Quaker and a Linnie, and I'm wondering what I can do about training them with the same clicker? I noticed that when I train my Quaker for instance, if the Linnie is in ear-shot he'll perk up and I'm worried he'll become desensitised to the clicker and become unmotived? Should I be completely separating the birds to train one-on-one or am I over-thinking it?
Never used a clicker with a bird but with dogs we use different clicker brands for each so they each have their own sound

Hi Kendra, that is all established on your initial consult with us. We take that time to evaluate where you are at with your birds and what your dynamic looks like, and whether that will mesh with our teaching style and flight training schedule and time commitment.
Hey Jamie, I want to get a Scarlet Macaw but I have heard that they have a nippy personality in general. How much of it is true or does it just depend on the individual bird? And if so should I think about getting another species?
They are sometimes nippy but all types of birds are nippy so I don’t think that should be the reason you don’t get one
I have a sad memory of walking down the side of my house, and somebody's loose budgie saw me and flew straight to me. He didnt make it, a crow dived and decapitated him. Then moved on, not even stopping to examine the corpse.
the budgy was probably in the crows terratorium. Crows even attack bald eagles that are not wild they basicly attack every bird if they are in there terratorium.

I want to get my birds into free flight so bad with Jaimeleigh & Dave but just don’t have to financial Freedom for this and I know my birds deserve anything in my power that I am able to do for them!! I will make it happen!! We hold a Bird fair every year in Mobile and do multiple yearly donations to different rescues and my mother is the Vice President of South Alabama Caged Bird Society so maybe I can ask the club for some advice on maybe some type of sponsorship for them!!!

I think it’s actually safer to free fly small birds that to free fly big birds. Because I think that birds like hawks would rather try to catch an big bird so he gets a lot of food, than to catch that very quick and nimble small bird that it wouldn’t even be worth the effort because,well, the hawk will not get a lot of food

Don't clip them!!
It might seem like a good idea but your bird will lose any trust you've built so far.
Just be patience you will get there 😊
Try target training or just start giving treats when your bird is near you
I am so scared to get into this with my meyers because of the birds of prey and natives in Australia, it just seems too risky to free fly small birds in AUS.
Probably true. I think that’s why Jamie and David go way out into the Idaho desert where they know there aren’t a lot of places with predatory birds
There’s gotta be an area in aus that’s more flat, free of trees and such if you’re confident that he’s ready

Do you know how I could possibly tell me a way in order to tame my birds that can’t be touched at all? They are in the same enclosure and are potential mates they are really dependent on each other. They used to be mellow and feel comfortable with us but now both of them strike at anyone even getting close to them. If someone tries to pet them, the other will attack
And problem is that they are not scared and just want to bite us
Keep their food in your hand and have them see your hand as a source of food. I only fed my small birds from the palm of my hands and my fingertips for the first few weeks.

Dave had a freeflight student in Australia. The course on the Birdtricks .com website says the 6 grand covers a couple in home visits/ consults during the 3 months. But then if you wanted to do the Freestyle Fliers trip to Moab with everyone else, you'd have to take your birds across the border and factor in your travel expenses. The first while, you do video chats & send videos of your training to them before speaking on facetime about where you are and how to improve. What areas can you free fly your birds?
The interesting thing would be to maintain a minimally intelligible conversation with a parrot, for the parrot to reason, for example, to say: what food do you prefer, peanuts or cashews ?, and the parrot to reply: I tell you the truth: I prefer humble sunflower seeds

Can you freefly budgies?
Inside only. Not a good idea to freefly tiny birds outside. Predators will chase and see them as food. Too stressful for the little guys. They don’t have a fighting chance against a big predatory bird. They can “free flight” inside your home and feel exercised, unlike a bigger bird

Hi, I wish you would address the double standards practiced by large parrot owners always discouraging owners of small parrots like conures, cockatiels, budgies, lovebirds, etc. While no no one is denying that they are more prone to predator attacks and harder to track, the truth is the the risk exists for EVERY BIRD. They can't just conveniently dismiss free flying smaller birds just because it's convenient for them and less dangerous for their bigger parrots...it's rather hypocritical. The important thing is that the owners are fully aware of the risks, not take greater risks when there is clear and present danger. There are TONS of of people, especially in Asian countries, that free flight smaller birds very successfully, with smaller and bigger parrots. No one is discouraging indoor flight training, but those who aspire to free flight, regardless of the bird size, should receive the adequate support, along with the hazards that come with it. I hope you address this controversial issue as most people there own smaller birds than bigger birds.
