Awesome driving! Thank you for posting! I used to pump endless quarters in for the music that plays at 3:02, 5:54, 8:17, 12:21, 14:44 but I would always get so distracted listening to the music and crash LOL!
I got 380K (arcade) (I think, somewhere around there) (Emporium Wicker Park - Chicago, IL) Secrets: 1) don't use the gas peddle (usually) - only shift up and down to change speed (do it A LOT - like constantly ALL the time). VERY rarely do I have both hands on the steering wheel. One on the wheel at the gun trigger and one on the gear shift. 2) on the boat stage, stay in high gear, but use the gas peddle to edge off your speed, because low gear is too slow and high is too fast. You can cruise through the level at about 2/3 high gear 3) on the ice stage if you don't have oil and and are following AND followed by only blade cars, you can stay in between them by edging your speed up and down. 4) it's ALL about points, so get them 5) if you crash, judge the cars coming from the rear and pull SLOWLY off the side of the road - avoid the double death phenomenon. (ANY person who has played knows what I'm talking about) AND Most important - play on a fully functional machine (preferably a stand up box) OH, there is another 6) If you can fill up the screen with max cars and they are all friendly, then you can coast in low gear and no more cars will come out. If you are in low gear, then slower friendlies will go off the bottom of the screen BUT will still be present. (you can actually have only your car on screen and coast through a level like this. This also works for enemy cars on the other side of the road. and another 7) Always take the left path if possible, and always follow the left half of the screen on the boats stage if possible. and another 8) at the first split in the road, go left. Then get close to the left edge (not on it) and go as fast as you can. It's a great way to rack up points, and all cars will pass on the right (feigning attempts to knock you off the road, but none will hit) and hence another 9) At the beginning, you get unlimited lives and a timer. At the end of the timer you get get additional lives according to how many points you got during the timer session. I think it's like 1 for 10k and 2 for 18k. (if you got 20k during the timer session, then you are on track to doing very well) Now get out there folks and show me what you can do. Oh, yeah, after about 200K, no more free cars. Before that I think it's every 20k, then 40k, then 60k (I may be wrong with those numbers, but there is a point where you will not receive any more extra cars.) (have you ever seen a game of Spyhunter with 7 evil cars and a helicopter on the screen at the same time?) I played this game for about 2 or 3 years, and I'm the best I've ever seen play it - by far.

I swear to God when I was in high school 1989 I played Spy Hunter for over an hour during lunch break and racked up over a million points. I finally killed myself so I could get back to class within 15 minutes of being tardy so I wouldn't get in big trouble. yet 135k is the world record? what??!! To get rid of the Enforcer Car; When the bridge is out, Call the weapons van right before the straight section of the bride, When you exit the van stay to the right side on gravel section. Do not drive on the road surface. Drive to the edge of the broken bridge and wait for the Enforcer Car to show up on the left side of the road on the gravel section. Stay on the gravel section and slowly cross the broken bridge. The Enforcer Car will follow parallel to you on the left side on the gravel section. The Enforcer Car will crash into the water while you cross over the broken bridge. After you cross over the broken bridge you can drive on the surface road and continue to drive. From this point the Enforcer Car will never appear for the rest of the game. Enjoy!
ok here's how bad I was at this game..... 1) I didn't know the music went beyond the whole "do do do deh deh deh deh do deh do dehhhhh" because my game was far beyond over at that point. 2) I didn't know that you could down a helicopter with missiles. 3) I didn't know there WAS a helicopter. Beats my high score! I notice that I used to confront enemy cars while you avoid them; that's probably smart. I'm reminded of a game Adult Swim put out called "Viva Caligula!" where you're Caligula wandering around Rome to collect weapons. There are countless citizens for you to get into fights with; but if you just ignore them and go about your business, the game gets much much easier.
Does anyone remember the name of a martial arts game around this time, where an Asian martial artist would be running through the woods and fight enemies. He would climb trees to get super powers. The goal was to reach a warehouse and rescue a princess.
I'm wondering the same thing. Maybe it's leveraging some internal logic, like there are a fixed number of enemy cars roaming around, and destroying them causes them to respawn near you, therefore it's best to simply avoid them? It's a very strange way to play though; I feel like it's missing the point.
When I'd play this as a kid at the arcade or at home it never occurred to me that there were rules, had no idea how points or anything worked. I thought the basic idea was to just not die, and kill as much as possible. I didn't realize killing the civilians was wrong lol.

The melody for that game is Peter Gun by Henry Mancini.
It replaced the James Bond theme; Midway originally wanted to use that but MGM/UA refused to let them license it here.
