Inception - What do Dreams Sound Like?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 січ 2021
- Hans Zimmer's score for Christopher Nolan's 2010 psychological thriller, Inception, was perfectly placed to explore the many layers within Nolan's story. Zimmer was able to realise the sound of dreams in music, but was also able to tell a story that bound Cobb and Mal together across time. In this essay, I look at how Zimmer uses a simple chord sequence, usually played by two violins, to do this.

Hi everyone! If you liked this one, do take a look at my analysis of Zimmer's score for 'Interstellar': ua-cam.com/video/n6HtAu0fNQ4/v-deo.html. Also, if you'd like to support my work, visit my Patreon account here: www.patreon.com/listeningin
I watched it. It's siiiiick!!!! Thanks so much!
Your videos on movies and the hidden messages in music are amazing. Please consider doing more long form videos on this and other subjects. The videos on lord of the rings, inception, and interstellar could have been an hour long and I would have enjoyed every minute. The only question is- do you have that much to say?
Thanks for what you do. Its beautiful.
This last scene deliveres every single time. I'm watching it in the middle of the night and it gives me this kind of unrest, anxiety and weird feeling in the stomach
so many things we ask ourselves
When you reach 1 million subscribers, I’ll be celebrating with you. This channel deserves so much more attention. Absolutely brilliant.
I WILL BE CELEBRATING FOR MONTHS IF THAT HAPPENS!!!
Literally who’s running this channel? These videos are nothing but bangers, fr, how are there not more people subbed to this channel???
Invite me to the party too
I'll never forget the final notes to Time at Zimmer's live concert, or rather the moments inbetween them, they seemed so long and quiet in a hall with thousands of people listening without breathing.
Inception really was one of those rare films that I couldn't help but saying 'wow' after watching. I had heard loads of hype around it but nothing about the story and it felt just as original to me as I hoped it would be. Thanks for the quick episode, simple musical observations like this sometimes pass me by but when I discover them it definitely enriches my experience!
The acting, script and production were superb, but the unseen star was Zimmer's score. Absolutely haunting.
It's kind of astonishing just how evocative those 4 chords are.....
It's so simple, but it sounds ancient...primordial...like it always existed and was somehow discovered.
Four chords....that's all really. But within that simple turnaround I hear so much depth. For whatever reason...that theme often makes me feel a sense of profound nostalgia and kinship with, specifically, the entirety of the human story over the 20th century. Everything that happened...every war...every person...every romance...every birth and death....everything.
The Sigur Ros song played in the final scene of Vanilla Sky has a similar effect on me.
I love it when music can convey SO much with so very little...
Ninna Nanna Per Adulteri used in Beyond the Pines and the melody of The Cloud Atlas Sextet evoke that for me.
A four-chord wonder!
Your voice pairs nicely with these videos 🙏 great content. Keep it up
Agreed. Your videos are pretty cool too 🕉
I'm simply blown away by your consistently perfect videos. They're truly flawless. Every one of them. The pacing, the transcriptions, the script and the voice over. Phenomenal
(Louie, you really are very kind)
@@ListeningIn Haha thank you, I just think that support should be given to those who deserve it and you are so deserving of anyone's support.
Love Hans Zimmer’s work on this score and I love your analysis! It’s simple and straight to the point, but no less insightful for it!
Bloody brilliant. Thank you for shedding light on that string duet/harmony representing each of them. I never would have gotten that otherwise.
Once again great work! Time is one of my favorite scores in Inception because it really is a melody that has slowly been trying to grow but can’t because Mal part is always keeping it from doing so but finally in the end we hear the theme finally be able to finish in the end because nothing is holding it back.
It's kind of astonishing how evocative those 4 chords in the Time theme are.....

I love this type of analysis.
I don't know how I got to this channel, but I'm glad I here.
First of all: Your channel is the best music channel on UA-cam. This video is as great as always. Thank you.
Second: Have you ever considered making a video about Wagner? Tristan and Isolde or Ring of the Nibelungs... That would be so great
That would be dopeee!
So glad I found this channel. Great work!
I'm so glad I found this channel. I'd love to learn more about music in general. Please never stop.
Another excellent video, I couldn't move my eyes from the screen, the analysis and music was so gripping :)
I just found you. I freaking love this video. This channel is what I needed, please keep it up!
Amazing video as always! Maybe down the road you could do a video on Elfman's scores for the Spider-Man films. He does such a great job at musically representing a powerful yet graceful and emotionally complex hero
Currently binging all your videos. Your knowledge and insight into the world of film music is inspiring and fascinating to say the least✨
All your videos are so enjoyable and so well thought out and eloquent - so well done. Thank you for taking the time to make these and share these with us. It’s truly an honor! As a dedicated viewer, I can tell you that every video you make is enjoyable and time well spent. 😍🙌❤️
Great channel! I found your channel few hours ago and I am already hooked.
Dear lord this was beautiful. You’re inspiring.
These videos are excellent man, keep it up
Another great video! Keep up the amazing work!
I just found your channel and it has made me incredibly happy to watch your videos!! I happen to be a musician with aspirations to compose for films and your videos remind me why I love both, music & film. Thank you so very much for creating something so wonderful, keep up the amazing work! :)
I kind of stumbled upon your videos and for the past couple of hours have been listening to your analysis for some of my favourite films of all time - Inception, Interstellar, LOTR and Jurassic Park.
Thank you for the absolutely brilliant analysis in each one of those videos
You don't know how excited I am to have found this channel!! Exactly what I've been looking for, the score is another character in the movie and I am so happy to have these videos that go into such great depth! Thank you! Please do Dune soon!!!!
THIS IS THE BEST CONTENT I HAVE SEEN ON UA-cam IN 12 YEARS. Your voice is SO NICE and your narration/storytelling is at the same level as the movies you are analysing. How is that possible. I have NEVER zoned out to musical analysis in a way like this before. THANK YOU.
(Also, i love the film Parasite. I don't know how "meaningful" the music is for the film, however if it is, i'd be delighted to watch your musical analysis of it)
Still a score I listen to on the regular.
It must be the music of a dream. Nobody has that many bananas in their house.
For a while I had no idea what you were talking about. Then I saw it. And I don't think I'll ever be able to unsee it. That is a ridiculous number of bananas.
How does this comment from a week ago exist when this video has only just been released? 🤔
He’s one of my patrons on Patreon! (They got this one a week early).
My favorite social media comment today. 🤣
Fantastic video, as usual!
Another amazing analysis as usual! I love the feeling of "re-discovery" of the soundtracks as you give meaning to elements that would otherwise go unnoticed. Keep up the brilliant work you've been doing so far. Would you consider doing an analysis on "The Last Samurai"'s score? Cheers!
I literally clapped when I finished watching this I felt like I was experiencing the film all again u are brilliant I hope u keep going don't be discouraged by view or sub count it will come ! u are amazing .
don't mind me just gonna binge watch all your videos :)
Thank you so much. I really appreciate this.
@@ListeningInnw I really appreciate you!
Great brief analysis!!! Thanx!!!
Gahhhh this video alone gave me chills. Didn't need the music to achieve that. Amazing!
i love this series, keep it up!
Great video dude you deserve more subscribers
🤯 wow thank you. It’s so obvious but I never put together myself the face my that the main theme is made up of two lines, one for Cobb and one for Mal. Beautiful
Great video! It would be exciting to hear you analyzing the incongruent (chronologically) but somehow perfectly fitting soundtrack of Picky Blinders.
Keep it up!
I am absolutely blown away with this video....and I decided to check out all other breakdowns and analysis....and what do you know you didn't disappoint...
Can you please do Silence of the Lambs ... I feel like it's underrated...
Thank you so much Harish! I will re-watch Silence of the Lambs, and will consider it. Thank you for the suggestion!
Great analysis 💥💯👏
Great great video. Subscribed.
This is a great analysis, in never noticed that when Mal dies only one violin plays instead of both
Beautiful!!
Love. Your. Videos.
its also one of the simplest scores ever conceived. it basically uses the famous 4 chords, but in a way which is actually varied enough to have the impact without having the stale taste of dull repetition, which is actually very ingenious.
If youtube had a stock market for channels, my money is on this one. Subscriber machine bout to go brrrr
I really hope you make a video about the score of tenet
I fucking hope so, love the score so much...just fits so well and its super fresh sounding
Brilliant. im a subscriber now
How on Earth does this video doesn't have at least 100k views! What is wrong with UA-cam algorithm?
Love it thanks you
I don't have this very often, but especially the end scene music is capable of moving me to tears (Just the other Day i found a version done by NEELIX, he mixed in some sad interview lines about a kid who got sick and dies and it Just snapped me like a twig)...... Great breakdown btw, you gained a sub!
Until the film, Tenet, this had been my favorite Nolan film. Of course, they are all magnificent, but something about the dreams within a dream hit to my very core. The soundtrack is still one I'll play randomly and lose myself in the idea that maybe I am just dreaming and my day will change once I awake. The film is brilliant at every turn. I will always be a Nolan fan!
holy fucking shit this is mindblowing, you are a legend
Nice.
I love this movie.
im not tearing up, you are
This film absolutely BEGS for a sequel. Maybe in another twenty years....
I'd say a spin-off more than a sequel. I have a vague idea of a story with someone who finds people trying to force them down into limbo, like an assassination of the mind.
Listening In: Love your channel and educational interpretations on some of my favorite scores; just found/subscribed today! Was curious to hear your thoughts/analysis on why Henry Jackman's ending track "Safe Now" from Captain Phillips (2013) is almost *identical* to Zimmer's "Time." Maybe a slightly different key, but sounds like same chord progression and rising emotional build. How is this possible? Is it plagiarism or an homage to the Z-Master?
While dreams are certainly an overarching theme in the movie, I think we shouldn’t miss the greater idea that the inception of an idea in ones mind can have such great an impact on someone’s life that they’ll take it with them to the grave.
Brilliant - wonderful analysis and as always so, so movingly interesting. What will be next I wonder?
"Time" is music of reality. One small detail that you can see when watching this scene, is that the totem is beginning to topple as it spins, which is a sign of it losing momentum, that indicates it's a reality.
Hi Mr Martin,
I absolutely love your videos and you've inspired me to start thinking about doing something similar... How do you get such good visuals to accompany the essays?
Hi Sebastian. Well it's from various places - what are you looking for? To do film analyses? Let me know, and I'd be happy to help.
@@ListeningIn Thank you,
I'd be looking to do slightly more short form videos on similar kinds of subjects that you choose. I'm particularly interested to see how you are able to create the kind of visuals that can be found at 1:12.
Thanks a lot! I love your content
Hi Sebastian. Well that sort of thing is done in Final Cut Pro X. I create my scores in Sibelius, export PDFs, take screenshots and then overlay them on top of the film within FCP X. Do you have any video editing software?
@@ListeningIn - as well as loving your videos, I especially appreciate your courtesy to those of us commenting. Kudos, sir.
wow
I've read and saw a video about Inceptions music. It's main theme is an extremely slowed down version of Edith Piaf Non, je ne regrette rien song
ua-cam.com/video/UVkQ0C4qDvM/v-deo.html
Yes. The answer to the ending of Inception lies in the score.
This movie has one of the best endings in film history. Thanks in no small part to Hans Zimmer.
Christopher Nolan is nothing without Hans Zimmer
And Hans Zimmer well he's Hans Zimmer
👍
I had a dream where I was in some kind of coffin and there were 5 points on my body where embalming fluid was going to be injected in and then the coffin closed like the end scene of the abominable dr phibes except the music was from the naked civil servant. I know this has nothing to do with the video but I thought I'd share.
Man of Steel music analysis, when? :)
I believe that you have the same dream, every night, for your whole entire life.
Review Elliott Smith 💛
Anazig
I love the music but boy did I hate that movie, it just did not fit my brain and I could not get into it for a minute.
I'm Alone 😍😥
