  • Heartbreak for Hockeytown. The Detroit Red Wings came so, so close to making the playoffs.
    Tune in as we start by lamenting the past few nights (0:00) before giving our thoughts on how the Red Wings just barely missed the playoffs due to the Philadelphia Flyers pulling the goalie against the Washington Capitals, and also give an overview of the final standings in the Eastern Conference Wild Card postseason race (6:05).
    We then cover Detroit's first dramatic win over the Montreal Canadiens, including J.T. Compher keeping them in it on another off night for Alex Lyon, Alex DeBrincat finally scoring from distance, Shayne Gostisbehere's insane leap to save the game, leading to Perron's great pass for Lucas Raymond's tying goal that set Detroit alight. Then, Lucas Raymond working with Dylan Larkin to finish the job, celebrating Patrick Kane style as Detroit's newest star saved the season again (15:00).
    After that, Lalonde's squad's next game against Montreal, including Reimer's highs and lows, Moritz Seider, Daniel Sprong. and Joe Veleno scoring, drama as David Perron scored a miraculous late goal and John Tortorella pulling the goalie still afterwards, Kane's shootout winner for naught, and feelings on how the barely missed playoffs played out (27:45).
    Next, we discuss Patrick Kane's comments and whether he's likely to be signed by Steve Yzerman for another stint with the Red Wings (51:00), and updates on Shai Buium, Simon Edvinsson, Sebastian Cossa, and the Grand Rapids Griffins (58:30).
    Also, the NHL Draft Lottery (59:35), a look at the NHL playoff series (1:01:10), and lots more before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (1:09:20) - enjoy!

    I've been a Wings fan for 39 years now. I feel zero hurt about this season. I'm so excited for next season. Detroit almost accidentally made the playoffs this season, we didn't trade away anything trying to make it. The sky is the freaking limit for Detroit. You guys feeling hurt or bad about this season are crazy people.🤣🤣🍻🍻

      It's funny how the fans like us that have been fans for 30+ years are the ones calling it how it is - a success. While the casual hockey/ just started watching hockey 1-3 years ago fans are the ones complaining lol. They have no idea how good we are looking right now. Glad to see sensible fans out here.

    Last time I went as nuts for a goal as I did for Raymond tying it against Montreal was Helm sending the Wings to the Finals in '09. That lasted about 24 hours lol. Sucks how the Wings went out but this was easily the most exciting season we're seen in at least a decade. A lot of moves to be made but without a doubt the ship is moving forward. This was my first full season listening to you guys, thanks for the great content LGRW!

    I think with Kane it might come down to what he wants for his legacy. He has won multiple Cups. Maybe mentoring Raymond and helping him develop into a star to semi superstar wing might be a part of his legacy and being a part of getting the team to Cup hunt and contender status might satisfy his competitive side while maintaining those relationships with the DeBrincats. Purely hypothetical, but that might be at play too.

      Ehh they'll at best play 5-6 games, get knocked out in the first round, spend the next 10 years trying to rebuild their team to compete again because they did everything possible to keep Ovi, it is what it is. Meanwhile the wings will be far in the playoffs in the next 2-3 thanks to having the genius of Yzerman as a GM. Id take the wings position over the caps current one 100 out of 100 times. Washington is playing with a Holland mindset as GM, you pay for that in the long run. Caps fans will be crying even harder than wings fans for the next decade plus.

    You are absolutely right about the points system! The NHL should adopt "the three point system" (the IIHF and Europe already play that way and they will do it that way in the Four Nation Games in 2025) and in the OT/SO the winner gets two points and the loser one point. It would also be fairer in the overall calculation of the points and then you go by the goal difference.
    Or, as in soccor/football (Europe), the winner gets three points, the loser gets zero points. In the event of a draw, each team receives one point, without an OT.
    A regular win is therefore more rewarded.

    • @stevenlitkey9354
      @stevenlitkey9354 2 місяці тому

      Seriously ?? So your thinking is messed up with the point system rather than, oh I don’t know, PLAY BETTER ? Huge Wings fan, but they finished right where they deserved.

      @@stevenlitkey9354 I don't know why you're upset! Your statement actually confirms the three-point system! Play better and harder, then your team will get the points. This points system can't be that bad if many sports in the world practice it.

      @user-tw3uc1iv9d 2 місяці тому

      @@europason2293 I agree with you on the one hand and disagree with you on the other! Because the regular playing time is 3x20 min and not 3x20 +5 min and therefore both teams that followed the normal process are rewarded with at least one point before there is an OT game. I'm no expert, but for me it's fairer.
      Or, an OT would be unnecessary and you could then follow the soccer system.

    Kept racking my brain over the many situations where 1 point could have been salvaged throughout the season, coupled with the lack of motivation the team had at times and it struck me; I wonder if a silver lining to this kind of loss, whereas Even if you managed to win the last 3 games of a season when you were close, EVERY SITUATION IN EVERY GAMES MATTER. This trauma will no doubt effect players to get (or be given) flashbacks to conjure that extra sense of urgency during games that don't seemingly seem to matter as much early and mid-season. This is a Great lesson, not a tragic failure.

    Think back to 2009. Up 3-0 in the Finals and losing at the end of game 7. Missing the playoffs in 2024 is not the worst feeling. Missing the playoffs this year isn't even worse than 1995 and getting swept. I will not watch any footage of 2009 at all. Not even regular season games. You guys are great. Sucks the season is over. I’m not as excited for the future as others seem to be. This year was fluky with the low point totals, and Kane will be gone, so Wings are still a long way away from contending. I see a scenario where drought extends another 3 years and Larkin gets old, meaning the third rebuild is required because Wings don’t have 1C or 2C in system.

Kasper Johansen and mazur will be up at some point next year, full time the year after and Axel sandin might be up by then as well. That's not exactly ages, by that time Boston, Florida, and Toronto will start to have drop offs due to bloated caps and aging players. The Sens and Ottawa will continue to be a disappointment, New Jersey will be pushing but who knows if Hughes can play half a season, Philly will self destruct with overrated torts, Tampa will be long done, Washington done, Pittsburgh done, so name me which teams in the East have more promise than Detroit when the league at large recognizes that the wings have the deepest prospect pool and all of these other teams are aging and running out of cap space? Him leaving just doesn't make sense, he would probably rather stay a few years with the wings and help with their playoff success and hopefully cap his career off with a cup win with the wings but I don't see him chasing a bunch of stanley cup teams trying to get another ring like he's desperate at the end of his career.
