The bass player is my father, Robert Meyer! They started out together and played together into the 50's. I have many 8x10 photos,reel to reel tapes,movies in storage. I recall many stories about Les Paul and Mary Ford. My father went on to do NBC Carson Cellar Show w/Johnny Carson as staff musician and side kick in skits. Also a radio show with his jazz trio "The New Yorkers" . My father and Les were the same age, however my father passed away 1992.
I love Les's playing, especially at this stage of his career, late 40's, I even like the singing, the guy has a not-bad voice, even with the clowning around, and the Larry(of the 3 Stooges) hairdo. I once had the privilege to see Les inNew York during his legendary Monday night gig at the Iridium , and, despite being crippled with arthritis, was brilliant. He even apologized to the audience that he couldn't play as well as he used to but 2nd rate Les Paul is better than anything I can think of.
I have the 78 rpm version of this uploaded were Les plays the full song at the quicker pace he adopts at the end of this clip. Thanks so much for the upload of this early footage of Les
Oh sure! Prior to the LP as we know it,Les used several modified Epiphones, I have seen pix of him back in late 30,s with a Gibson L7 archtop! Most of his early electrics though were modified Epi,s
Lol. I'm only 14 but I think this song is awesome. Les Paul was an amazing jazz guitarists, not to mention he created what became the most popular guitar to date. I think his stuff with Mary Ford is a bit cheesy for me, but I like his instrumental stuff. His best song besides this is "Blue Skies."
@chester777ful - kind of apples and oranges... Les' is 10 years earlier and synched to a recording...Chet's is live... Chet would be the first guy to tell you what a massive impact Les had on him. His older brother Jim Atkins was in the LP Trio before Chet was even playing...and in fact got his first 'real' guitar given to him by Jim via Les! So you could say without Les, there might not have ever been a Chet!
Les Paul formed a trio in 1937 with rhythm guitarist Jim Atkins, (older half-brother of guitarist Chet Atkins) and bassist/percussionist Ernie "Darius" Newton. They left Chicago for New York in 1938, landing a featured spot with Fred Waring's radio show. Chet Atkins later wrote that his brother, home on a family visit, presented him with an expensive Gibson archtop guitar that Les Paul had given to Jim. Chet recalled that it was the first professional-quality instrument he ever owned. FROM WIKIPEDIA
@rockinredneck57 The LA version of the LP Trio was riding high from about mid-1944 onward. Sam Wolfe would have been in his "post-Gentlemaniacs" period, when he became just a character actor.
My God! The singer is the spit an image of our old minister, Pastor Rastor from the Balkans! We wondered what he got up to in his spare time! And - Oooo Les - what a big guitar you've got - shave a bit off the sides, dump the shirt and the singer for a girl singer and who knows - you might even make a name for yourself - but don't expect every other guy on the planet to have a guitar with your name on it - that would be an impossible ambition to achieve! You were a genius Lester, RIP.
@rockinredneck57 You're probably right about the time, but even after Les's recovery, he had some mobility in his elbow and most of his shoulder. It did give him pain for the rest of his life.
Les could eat most guitarists for dinner! This was the years before low neck action and light gauge strings so imagine what talent it took to pull this off. You can tell where Jeff Beck got a few of his licks!!!
Les is alive, well and plays just about every Monday night at the Irridium uptown in NYC. Special guests sit in all the time like Tony Bennett, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and many others, Jon Paris, etc. Check him out!
@pappyredux I agree its just that i have more respect for finger pickers Chets main influence was of course Merle Travis dont get me wrong i love Les without him there would be no multi tracking thanks fore your reply nice to have someone on the same wave length
Les's fingers just glide over those guitar strings like someone playing a harp. The music sounds almost Spanish, but is it supposed to be more Italian (I'd think so from the outfits and operatic like voice). Gotta love those shirts!
I have found people in today's world know Lester for his Gibson Guitars but they do not know him as the fantastic guitar player he was. Most of the best guitarists lists ignore him or rate him way down the list when he is much better than some rated higher.
Kevin Coffey Just saw this question that was posted 9 months ago. My father, Hal Deam, was with the Les Paul Trio in 1947, the year I was born. My email address is rleedeam@gmail.com Rick Deam

Les was FABULOUS!
Les will always be the man on electric guitar.... THE MAN!
Les rules. Thanks for being you.
A fun video for all to watch; excellent guitar work by Les Paul.
Roger Plafkin--Plafkin Farms, Ada, Michigan
RIP, thank you for everything!!!
les looks likes hes having so much fun.
god bless him. He's awesome.
Nasdrowje ,master paul❤

This is the first time I've seen Les Paul playing a hollow body.
So fine. Wonder who else from this scene is still around beside Les. Welcome back Pappy!
I believe so. That would explain the fact that he's moving around so much. He's practically dancing lol.
Holy crap! He's like a django on electric guitar!
@chester777ful - kind of apples and oranges... Les' is 10 years earlier and synched to a recording...Chet's is live...

When I was sixteen my hair would look like Sammy Wolfe's when I'd wake up in the morning
Вечная память. Спасибо за всё, Лес!
As much as I love this song and Les himself, I get weird feelings when I watch the actual video :D
@rockinredneck57 The LA version of the LP Trio was riding high from about mid-1944 onward. Sam Wolfe would have been in his "post-Gentlemaniacs" period, when he became just a character actor.

@seadawn79 -- it's not a movie. It's called a Soundie. Was kind of like an early version of a music video.
look in 'About This video' to the right of the screen... that's Sammy Wolfe!
RIP to the legend.
@chelle329 , I think it's Russian, not Italian
Whoa!!! 🎸‼️🪆
@rockinredneck57 You're probably right about the time, but even after Les's recovery, he had some mobility in his elbow and most of his shoulder. It did give him pain for the rest of his life.

I know. It was just my mistake in using an incorrect tense :).
Les is alive, well and plays just about every Monday night at the Irridium uptown in NYC. Special guests sit in all the time like Tony Bennett, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and many others, Jon Paris, etc. Check him out!
RIP man :'(
RIP les paul
hes an amazing guitarist. if bb king is in the top 10 guitarist of all time, so should les paul
@90lonewolf90 Eh like I said I didn't really care for it but oh well. I'm 17 now and I still listen to his stuff from time to time. RIP
REAL music ftw!
@Atomicflash500 er...yes. These Soundies were lip synced/played to a prerecorded track - like a music video. Not live.
@Roxxy1987 It would have to be before 1948 because he was using his whole right arm, not just his wrist.
wow, I have this on an old 78 rpm record.
@seadawn79 FYI bass player Robert Meyer/Bob Meyer!
It's interesting to compare this masterful version with other "Dark Eyes" guitar interpretations (Chet Atkins -also on UA-cam-,and Django Reinhardt)
@seadawn79 that's amazing. Who else did your dad play with?
@ryanhashton BB King admired Les and learned from him, he said so himself in several interviews.
@pappyredux I agree its just that i have more respect for finger pickers Chets main influence was of course Merle Travis dont get me wrong i love Les without him there would be no multi tracking thanks fore your reply
nice to have someone on the same wave length
@anotherBluesBrother hahaha true that.
the shirts!
หาดูยากครับ
i like this tune, reminds me of somethingfamaliar

...And that's why it's his name that got put on the solid body Gibson guitars!
What's the name of this movie?
I have found people in today's world know Lester for his Gibson Guitars but they do not know him as the fantastic guitar player he was. Most of the best guitarists lists ignore him or rate him way down the list when he is much better than some rated higher.
I meant to say "He might not have made it, but he's in it."
So . . . yea.
RIP
Hmm .. do ya think Les & the band might be "miming" this performance? I didn't see a cable coming out of the guitar.
This music is based on a score written by Adalgiso Ferraris, a British/Italian composer who had spent years in Russia before WW1 . See Wikipedia
"Этот романс исполнялся в России еще с середины 19века. Так что Wiripedia чего то не договаривает))
What happened to the Les Paul from the outstanding 1946 Jazz at thePhilharmonic, Los Angeles record ? This seems like a different player almost.
Musicians have to eat. - The great JATP sessions are here on YT, too.
I heard through the grapevine that Les is in very poor health right now.If you guys are believers you might want to say a prayer for him.
It's probably the solid body "log" he invented, with the wood cut outs to make it look like a "real" guitar. But that's just a guess.
Fuck, man!
Your dad was some kind of a Bassbeast!
I never heard such a complicated Walkingbassline.
I hope you also play bass!
they took the Epi name off the guitar??????????
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's Les' handbill plank guitar?? Assembled in epiphany plant I guess
I believe the pianist here is Hal Deam. Can anyone confirm that?
Kevin Coffey Just saw this question that was posted 9 months ago. My father, Hal Deam, was with the Les Paul Trio in 1947, the year I was born. My email address is rleedeam@gmail.com Rick Deam
does anyone know how old this is?
@seadawn79 - Robert - this is fantastic news!
Message me privately if you'd like a copy.
@00:24 Phil Collins travelled to the past!
@seadawn79 That's real cool,man. :>)
Then why is he playing guitar in it? It might e his, but he's in it.
I love the music, but why's he dressed like a space man?
@No1snYpeslikme
This song isn't his tho.
NOWAY, its supposed to be Russian. Its a russian song, sung in russian, for gods sake.
he is not plugged in to an amp !!!
whats with the weird guy?
+++
Love you les but this video cant compare with Chet Atkins video of this tune check it out guys.
3 people don't have ears....
