All the best on a speedy recovery from that incredible crash. I can’t wait to see you back on the trails! The tool you want to use to cut the zip ties is a pair of flush cut pliers. FastCap makes a few different sizes and they are great for getting a clean cut right to the edge.
Just built a Ripmo AF with some 2nd hand bits and bobs and a new Lyric fork your original video helped me decide on it - first ride I didn't manual down the whole trail so feel a bit ripped off :D

Congrats on the HD5! I would say I love mine but it did just kick my a$$. Lack of tools? I've never found a better, cleaner solution than nail clippers for zip tie tails. Vice grips work great for holding the cable blocks, show me a better tool For that. And bench vice is the preferred option for the lockring. The massive 29" wheel means I can get a lot closer to the 49nm (yes, that's MASSIVE) torque sec of the Shimano cassette than I ever could with a shorter wrench.
@@JeffKendallWeed thanks for the reply, you rock. And I'm living south in Olympia, I need to get up north to Galbrath this summer, which trail do you recommend for first time user there?
I’ve always thought about building one of these up as less of an all-mountain bike and more of a big trail bike: 150m pike, lighter wheels and tires, and piggyback shock.
@@JeffKendallWeed every day gets a little better. Frustrating at times, but the distance thing really helped! Made it seem more possible. I appreciate you taking the time and giving advice. Hopefully next video will be me riding wheelies haha
A quick tip, the first build of a bike you can’t get around the fishing challenge. I spin the bike in the stand and send the housing or hose down. BUT....once it’s built, when ever I need to change the hose or housing, I use the double ended little red barb sram makes for swapping reverb hose. You just screw the the new and the old hose together and pull it through.
Hey Shawn, that trick does not really work well on the Ibis Ripmo AF. I did use to do that on the HD3 and Mojo 3 though! On the AF, the metal guides that snap into either end of the tube are super tight against the cable. You can't really get the old housing back through those very easily, and they are so tight that's going to be next to impossible to get a second cable to follow along. That said, I haven't tried that double ended SRAM barb, that is a cool looking piece!
Jeff Kendall-Weed, my Ripmo AF was the 1st bike I used the double ended bard trick on. I pulled the cable guides out while the old hose stayed in, and slid the guides over new hose before I pulled in the new hose with the double bard. Did the same with the dropper housing.
I like the build videos! I always learn something! I also figured out a little hack for quick links with two pairs of pliers. But those tools are so handy.
The right tool for the job is Excel sprue cutters, part #55595. You'll never use nail clippers again! (Except for fingernails that is) They cut absolutely flush so you can avoid those nasty zip tie scratches!
Right on Nick, the Ripmo AF does start at $2999, so close to that Marin on special! Both bikes are solid. A good friend of mine designed that Rift Zone, it's a solid bike!!! Enjoy!!!!
Nice build Jeff! I think 165mm cranks will becomes the norm for medium builds. I made the switch this season on my GT Sensor which has lowish bb. There’s no reason unless you’re racing to go bigger, right?
Thanks for the note George. And thanks for supporting Jenson! Weird it didn’t work with the link, but don’t sweat it on my behalf, Sales have been solid with them this year so I’m not sweating a few unusual occurances!

Hey booger, I wish I had one favorite route! I don;t think I did the same ride twice in any of those vlogged rides. My favorite trails are all off the back - Space Wolf, Dad Bod, Devil Cross.
I like your method for tightening the cassette down! Is that a good way to go or do I need to get it at the 40 nm? My arms aren’t calibrated well🤣. Hope you heal up soon!
Hey Matt, the 29" wheel provides SO MUCH leverage it'l get it a lot tighter than a normal wrench. I also like that I can spread the torque out more evenly. I still am hesitant about really wrenching the steel lockring into that aluminum freehub body, but so far so good!
Is it just the 165mm cranks that make you have better pedal clearance or is it a combo of things? I've noticed I have a lot of pedal strikes on my Ripmo AF
Hey Hunter, hope you're doing well! Was actually wondering about inviting you out for one of those skills classes we talked about a while back at yoga! The 165 cranks help with pedal clearance, and for me they are a lot more comfortable for out of the saddle pedaling.
Hey Codai, I've always pieced stuff together since so many pre-assembled tool kits have unnecessary tools. I normally use hardware store Allen keys, I prefer the Allen brand as it's made in USA and super high quality. Side cutters, cassette lockring tool, BB tools, chain-whip, bleed kit, 32mm wrench (for BB tool and fork top cap), spoke wrench, and chain breaker are pretty much all that's really necessary. For a headset swap you need a bearing press to do it right, and the fancy removal tools for headset cups are great. The crown race install tool is nice but also not fully necessary. And while cutting guides a great, you can use a pipe cutter just fine, and those are a lot cheaper.
Thanks Paul! OUCH, I remember you commenting on the other vid about the scapula. To date, my broken acromion (front/top of the Scapula) is the most painful bone I've broken. Hope you are doing ok!!!
Jenson!!! I bought that wrench for doing threaded headsets, but man, it's surprisingly handy! The 32mm wrench is used in a bunch of spots. Fork air cap, BB tool, and chainring install/removal. My wrench has the old 15mm pedal end on it, which also works for Fox footnuts. Boom!
