The Collected Teachings of Ajahn Chah was published in 2012. This is the complete collection of talks by Ajahn Chah that have been translated into English. During the Winter of 2012, Ajahn Amaro has given a daily reading which are recorded as audio files. What is collected here is the 'rough-hewn' edit of these readings. These talks are being made available here as a stop-gap, until the final version is ready. A final version of these readings, including the Q&A, is still under preparation and will be published, hopefully, in the near future.

I had a difficult time emotionally after my brother, sister and mother died. Everything in life seemed without any purpose -- my personal goals and things I felt strongly about, opinions etc. One day they're here, the next day they're gone. It's mindboggling. I had a hard time with their deaths until I heard this talk about "The dissolution of all conditioned phenomena ... Fire, Earth, Wind and Water coming together and then separating." Everything falls apart after coming together. Their death makes sense to me now. I'm at peace with it at last.

We also take the finality of death, contemplate our own, and see it in our own life, and eventually seeing our suffering through nonacceptance of things we cannot change, we abandon the view of a self that this is 'happening to' and in the end, it isnt 'happening to me' (and not fair) anymore.. it just 'happens'

From what I read Ajahn Chah was in his youth in love but that was socially incompatible. So in his beginning years as a monk it was probably not easy too. But thankully for us all he chose this path which until these days has been having an impact on many, which may also help to carry the torch of truths further.

this may make it a little clearer.......i am a student of Thai Buddhism and have been for 7 years now. i even ordained as a Thai Buddhist monk during the 2011 rainy season in Thailand . As i understand, the word , "suffering" does not mean the same in this context. To the western mind the word, " suffering" has a different meaning to the Buddha's meaning. A better translation from Thai may be to substitute the word, "suffering" with the word, "tolerate", which gives the western mind a better understanding of what is meant.
we have to tolerate many influences on our lives.....we have to tolerate. getting older,.......we must tolerate the knowledge that we all die.........our lives, from birth to death have events which we tolerate.....etc.
suffering in this translation from Thai or Pali i feel is the wrong word for western minds to relate to.
with greatest respect, krab namassa kahn Lp.

I agree. I have read from other sources, including a Mahayana and a Tibetan dzogchen source, that the word "suffering" is too narrow to be an accurate translation of "dukkha".
A broader and more accurate phrasing would include the words stress, distress, anxiety, tension, worry, concern, irritation, fretting, dissatisfaction, etc.
In other words, the full range of forms of unhappiness from mild to severe, from minor to major, from acute to existential. My experience accords with this broader view. Once seen clearly, dukkha is alarmingly pervasive and constant.

Dukkha in the pre pali is 'an off-center cart wheel'. That is a bouncy ride in going forward. Sukha on the other hand was a well greased cart wheel. Is it true you may say, well check Wikipedia.

I heard his health declined because he pushed himself too hard, giving too much of himself away due to his deep compassion. I hope ALL monks/nuns will take that example to heart, and not forget to have compassion to their own bodies too.

Mahim Gupa I'm not the great teacher Ajahn Chah. Idk if you know but he has passed away. I only can give my view on your question is it may help. I don't believe Ajahn Chah was saying we are HERE to suffer more so its just a nature of life that we DO suffer. I believe once we all have realized that this is a truth that's in our life, we can start to focus on the things that actually help us to our end suffering.

The comment " buddhism is fear based is wrong completely it is insult done purposely by christian missionerys. ". Truth is opposite .real buddhist phenomena brings joy. One may distort that the way they want but it is not genuine doctrine what buddha said.Only After meditation one can observe. It is just opposite of fear for god or death . A joy , happiness , calmness filled mind . After practicing buddha doctrine or meditation. The above accusation is of christian missionerys false propoganda. God based relegeons are the ones who " order s commandments of god . fearing. To break gods rules. But buddhism teach you are your own creator, not unseen god, meaning your mind . Is what decides to do good or bad. You can decide what is real and unreal not by teaching god s rules or forced to do things even killings of living beings fearing. " god. S faith. Ones who misundestand buddhas words are the ones who misquote . Buddhas words. It is only good noble thoughts, words , action bring happiness. But bad , actions, bad thoughts obscene words. Give unhapiness to everyone. Buddhism is never forced or frightend to believe anything any one or god. Just see for yourself wether phenomenas are correct or wrong. No godly unseen secrets or miracles . Buddhism only consists of great reality. What you can hear or see or experiment in this life. No need to die to go to heaven one has never seen.

Having 100 cows or 100 buffalo it's not good it's too much pressure with people this days living in a connected world. It could be more than 100 all connected with different directions on the mind bringing enough confusion and problems if you are not in the correct community to achieve your goals in the ordinary world.
