You could “sweat fit” the valve seat in by heating the head in an oven or bbq grill, and chilling the seat with dry ice or regular ice. It should then just drop in. I would still peen the metal over to lock it in place. Nice video !!

That seems a bit extreme! No problem with cracking the head or breaking the valve seat? I put the valve seat (ring) in the freezer for a few minutes and used a propane torch around the exhaust valve area.

Great video. I've found the best way to seat the valve seat is to put the valve in and tap on it with a socket. This ensures that the valve will seat evenly in operation.

Exceptionally clear video on valve adjustment-- an area most engine repair videos do not even attempt. Not only did you show the problem condition, but exactly how to adjust the valves and lap them properly. As a bonus, I discovered I do not need a valve spring compressor or other sophisticated tools. This video covered a woefully overlooked area in our developing knowledge of small engine mechanics, and without your careful, explicit instruction, many of us would remain in the dark.

WOW! I am very happy I found this video. I have a 1978 Wheel Horse D200 with a Kohler K532 engine. It's been running great until about one month ago. While removing snow with the snowthrower on the front it suddenly lost power. I was able to park it in the shed. A week later I found zero compression in one cylinder. I feared a possible broken connecting rod, or possibly a broken valve spring. I never considered a valve seat like this. The engine turns over easily so I'm going to investigate the valve issue first. This video is the perfect instruction for this repair......I just pray it's this and not the rod.
    Thank you!

We were taught in military maintenance school to torque 3x. If final value was 90 ft lb the 1st torque = 30#, 2nd = 60#, 3rd = 90#.
Sequence was the same, start in center, crisscross, work toward outer edges so metal stress movement wasn't impeded by an already torqued fastener.

  • @mowerguys

Good video, one very important note:
This engine comes equipped with a compression release on the cam, the valve adjustment needs to be performed with the piston 1/4" past TDC on the compression stroke for the release to perform properly. The starting circuit is not strong enough to bleed off the full compression on the cylinder during cranking speeds. Lots of starters and batteries are mistakenly replaced due to this procedure being overlooked. If an Intek of this style is locking during cranking, follow the valve adjustment procedure with the piston in the proper position. This series is notorious for either spinning too freely (lash too tight) or locking (lash too loose) during cranking, the proper valve adjustment is critical.

Many people say Don's method always works while other people have problems doing as B&S recommends. I'm working on my mower now and not sure which approach to do.

Broke down engine for rebuild and found the exhaust valve has been leaking. Rings are warn with end gap almost 1/4 inch, but no ridge at the top of the cylinder wall. Going back together with standard size parts and new valves which will be lapped in. Your video is spot on. Thanks for sharing.

Loctite makes a high temp seat and stem retainer which would have worked better than doing that to the head, not that what you did is going to hurt anything, small engines are pretty forgiving. Just something to keep in mind for the future. Thanks for the vid. Loctite 640.

I had to repair a similar motor for someone only they drove it around ( the motor was on a ride on lawn mower) with it burning heaps of oil as the head gasket was blown & sucked in a lot of oil from the crankcase.
They also were sold the lawnmower for $1000 AUD second hand in exchange for their old mower with a blown Briggs motor on it,well, the mower they bought had loud tappet noise as if it had never had a valve adjustment.
Well, the exhaust valve stem tip wore out,the spring retainer fell off & the valve fell on top of the piston then pushed the valve through the cylinder head.
A brand new B&S cylinder head kit was sourced for a bit over $200 AUD down from $300.
After I fitted that, the engine ran like new again with no more smoke.
That valve repair is a very clever repair, more clever than my dad sometime like the L36 Buick V6 motor in his car needs a valve job or at least another cylinder head, the compression is o.k. except for number 2 cylinder where the exhaust valve & seat has suffered badly from valve recession as liquified petroleum gas makes the engine run leaner.
Well, the exhaust valve head probably warped when it was held open on its exhaust stroke.
The engine is losing oil through its front & rear seals so doing it my way would be cheaper,he wants to replace the motor & he wants my help.
My point is why should I help anyone who doesn't want to listen to what I have to say to the point that they think I'm wrong ????

Hi Don, love watching all your videos.
One reason for a dropped Exhaust Seat is an over heated engine. Always check for grass packed in around the cylinder cooling fins or a plugged flywheel cover screen. Great video and keep up the good work.

I have always adjusted the valves 6mm past TDC on the compression stroke. and I set the gap at.006" for both inlet and exhaust valves. this has solved a lot of the starting issues I get with customers mowers. saying that, I appreciate your video and your channel as it has helped me with other issues in the past. thanks :-)

Great video. Very professional. If you were local I would take all my small engines to you. I have a riding mower that I'm thinking of tearing apart. It stopped while mowing and won't turn over. Don't know if it is locked up. Afraid to look. I'm retired and not much to do so may as well tear it apart. I may be able to fix it. If I run into problems I will contact you. Thanks for sharing.

The engiine was overheated at some point. That is what usually causes valve seats on those engiines to drop out.

I torque in 3 steps. 5, 10 and 18. Remember that is soft aluminum. Would also sand the head on a piece of plate glass, especially on Briggs Intek engines know for eating head gaskets.

I have used staking on mine that keeps popping the seat out but doesn't hold anymore so now to use some Seal-Lock.

Don, previously when I’ve seen you and others adjust valves, there’s an emphasis placed on making sure the piston is at TDC during the compression stroke. I really didn’t see you do that specifically, at least initially, in the early part of the video, and I assume you just know it’s at TDC as you rotated the flywheel. An experienced technician like yourself, i guess, just “knows” where the piston is as you watch the valve stems and rocker arms move. I’ve seen other videos where screwdrivers, wooden dowels, or other objects are placed in the cylinder through the spark plug hole to confirm TDC. You obviously do not need that crutch. Thanks for sharing your expertise with the less knowledgeable and experienced. Your time and effort is appreciated.
