Don, great video. It's so good to see you doing complete fixes. I know it's time consuming to film these types of repairs, but it's so much appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Exceptionally clear video on valve adjustment-- an area most engine repair videos do not even attempt. Not only did you show the problem condition, but exactly how to adjust the valves and lap them properly. As a bonus, I discovered I do not need a valve spring compressor or other sophisticated tools. This video covered a woefully overlooked area in our developing knowledge of small engine mechanics, and without your careful, explicit instruction, many of us would remain in the dark.
WOW! I am very happy I found this video. I have a 1978 Wheel Horse D200 with a Kohler K532 engine. It's been running great until about one month ago. While removing snow with the snowthrower on the front it suddenly lost power. I was able to park it in the shed. A week later I found zero compression in one cylinder. I feared a possible broken connecting rod, or possibly a broken valve spring. I never considered a valve seat like this. The engine turns over easily so I'm going to investigate the valve issue first. This video is the perfect instruction for this repair......I just pray it's this and not the rod. Thank you!
I have owned a Craftsman 18HP intek for 13yrs now , still runs like new.I haven’t had to go inside the motor yet, an watching your videos will really help when the time comes to. I just love how these motors can be fixed & resurrected back to life.
Wow, I never knew a seat could break loose! What I love about your channel is your an excellent mechanic and sometimes you pull off little miracles. Definitely one of the best mechanics on youtube! How the hell do you only have 207k subs?
I've seen a few people now working on lawnmowers and I just want to say dons videos I think are the best and this guy knows his stuff. That's why I'm now only going to watch dons videos and I can say I love them, I only buy broken engines from any thing has a hobby myself but find it so unwinding to watch someone like Don working on them, don't stop making them kind regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍 👍 ❤
You could “sweat fit” the valve seat in by heating the head in an oven or bbq grill, and chilling the seat with dry ice or regular ice. It should then just drop in. I would still peen the metal over to lock it in place. Nice video !!
That seems a bit extreme! No problem with cracking the head or breaking the valve seat? I put the valve seat (ring) in the freezer for a few minutes and used a propane torch around the exhaust valve area.
You came highly recommended by AlchemistLair and I'm glad he did! This could be the fix for the Briggs and Stratton on my Craftsman self-propelled push mower. It has Zero Compression after its 2nd use of the 3rd mowing season. Briggs and Stratton small engine quality sucks since manufacturing was moved to China!!! I never had any issues at all with Craftsman self-propelled push mowers before this one. Thank you, Dony!
Great video. It may be helpful to some viewers to know that the "silver" push rods are aluminum and typically found in the intake. They don't get as hot. The exhaust push rod is typically steel to deal with higher heat. I use a small rubber hammer and the valve itself to reinstall the seat. I think that gives better distribution of the blow from the hammer. I do like your idea of using a center punch to secure the seat in place. Thanks for taking the time to make this EXCELLENT video.
I can tell this guy really knows what he’s doing gives you a good view and a good explanation and I really enjoyed it and learned a lot I mean he doesn’t fall around like others fix Tyrell fixtures at all and I’m a very serious person I preferred this way
Had the same problem on an OHV16 Tecumseh last year. Did same procedure but as you said no guarantee. It lasted almost exactly 1 year and threw the seat again. Had to put in a new head. The owner was aware that it might not last and was ok with it. Nice job with the video and explaining the process
Great video. I've found the best way to seat the valve seat is to put the valve in and tap on it with a socket. This ensures that the valve will seat evenly in operation.
Thanks for making this repair procedures . Your close up screen shot are great and detailed. It would also be helpful if you can list all the tools you used . Thanks again .
Wow your good, thorough and well presented, I learned more here than I thought possible. Didnt think I would be capable of this you make it sooooo easy Thank you
Great vid as always. Been a small engine mechanic for 12 yrs and if I ever have an adjustment that far off I make it a habit to remove the push rods and check them before I even setting the lash.
Wouldn't start, turns over easy. Just like my Kohler K241AQS engine. I also had lots of blow by in the crankcase. Almost was blowing the dip stick out. Broke down engine for rebuild and found the exhaust valve has been leaking. Rings are warn with end gap almost 1/4 inch, but no ridge at the top of the cylinder wall. Going back together with standard size parts and new valves which will be lapped in. Your video is spot on. Thanks for sharing.
Great video!! Wish I had stumbled across this sooner! I just pulled a 18.5 apart with the exact same problem. Didn't think it could be repaired so found a used head on eBay. Definitely would have tried this first. I'm still gonna try this repair and keep it for a spare. Thanks again for the great info!!

Don't know if it is locked up. Afraid to look. I'm retired and not much to do so may as well tear it apart. I may be able to fix it. If I run into problems I will contact you. Thanks for sharing.
I've watched Dony do this a couple of times now on different mowers...I don't even own one 😉. Top man and very knowledgeable, he make every video enjoyable ❤️️
EXCELLENT camera work, lighting, sound. Sound is clean, no wind or background noise. Vocals are clear, concise. I am hoping I don't need to go this far but I will be following this video if I do. THANKS
I enjoy watching you work! My first repair was a helicoil on a 1950s 2 stroke HD head back in the mid 1960s and my hobby and livelihood is anything to do with tools. I picked up quite a bit watching your techniques. See there you can teach an old dog new tricks, if he will just watch and listen Thank you for time you spend at this.
Only thing I might do any different is to test it for compression and running b4 complete assembly. You know what your doing and your confidence shows. Thanks for the awesome video!
Great video Don. That seat is there to stay. That is great you mentioned to the owner that this may not last forever but it most likley will last a long time.
Good video, one very important note: This engine comes equipped with a compression release on the cam, the valve adjustment needs to be performed with the piston 1/4" past TDC on the compression stroke for the release to perform properly. The starting circuit is not strong enough to bleed off the full compression on the cylinder during cranking speeds. Lots of starters and batteries are mistakenly replaced due to this procedure being overlooked. If an Intek of this style is locking during cranking, follow the valve adjustment procedure with the piston in the proper position. This series is notorious for either spinning too freely (lash too tight) or locking (lash too loose) during cranking, the proper valve adjustment is critical.
I have a B&S 331877-0036-G1, I see the same thing in the B&S repair guides to adjust at 1/4 past TDC. I've read mixed results on the technique. Many people say Don's method always works while other people have problems doing as B&S recommends. I'm working on my mower now and not sure which approach to do.
Every thing I have read about RTV is to let it set for 24 hrs to cure before letting the motor oil contact the RTV. And since I have been following the directions I have not had one leaker to come back
Hi Don, love watching all your videos. One reason for a dropped Exhaust Seat is an over heated engine. Always check for grass packed in around the cylinder cooling fins or a plugged flywheel cover screen. Great video and keep up the good work. Cheers Willy
Good point.. who'd have thought? So the head expands so much that the ring pops out. I usually blow the tractor out with compressor hose after cutting..now I'll be sure to be very thorough around the engine block.
I forgot to mention if you have equipment stored out side watch for mouse/squirrels building nests inside the cooling shroud and around the cylinder. Willy
I have always adjusted the valves 6mm past TDC on the compression stroke. and I set the gap at.006" for both inlet and exhaust valves. this has solved a lot of the starting issues I get with customers mowers. saying that, I appreciate your video and your channel as it has helped me with other issues in the past. thanks :-)
Don, congratulations with hitting 100k subscribers! Thank you so much for the longer video on diagnosing, and repairing a Valve Seat. Well done! Cheers! :-)
