Maryna your timing with this tutorial is amazing! I just completed making blocks of Garter Stitch for an Afghan for my grandson. Yesterday I tried to start stitching them together and it was stressing me out big time because I didn’t like the mattress Stitch.Today I found this tutorial and I cannot wait to try it. I was ready to toss them out. Kudos to you. You’re an excellent teacher. Thank you.❤️🧶
You are brilliant! Love the sweater! Thank You for showing the wrong side, No one else hardly ever does and that is so important when deciding which seam to use. Thankyou!
I love this, seams are my worst nightmare. I think I'll have to do some swatches to try this out. Fun! Thank you for a very clear and percise tutorial.
Have fun experimenting with seams. They could be quite fun as long as we don't overwhelm ourselves. It usually helps to plan a few extra days for seaming, because making nice seams could take a while. But it's time well spent!
Thank you! I have given up knitting because of arthritis, but I am going to try again using your simple instructions. Can't wait to make my knitting look so smooth and professional.
Wow!!! I am really awful at sewing my pieces. I’ve frogged several projects because the end result was just terrible. I tried the mattress stitch on those projects. I’ve given up and started knitting seamless and in the round on almost everything to avoid seaming. All hope is not lost. I’ll try your technique most definitely. Thank you. ❤️
I agree, Leila - there is always hope! With so many different techniques, there is always a way that is perfect for you. If you don't like mattress stitch, try other ways to seam. Test them on swatches first to avoid frogging a project. Happy knitting (and seaming)! ;-)
UA-cam suggested this video to me today. I will remember this technique!! I just finished a baby sweater with bulky yarn, and the underarm seams are so bulky the baby will have its arms in the air all the time :) Thanks so much. Brilliant.
I love this technique for seaming knitted fabric. Thank you so much I am learning from your videos you are an excellent instructor.🌸 I just wanted to mention also the sweater you are wearing is lovely.
Wow! Life-changing! Thank you so much! I absolutely hate mattress stitch. This looks so much neater and your tutorial is so simple to understand. Can't wait to try this.
I don't understand why this works as you are passing the needle front-to-back and then back-to-front immediately through the same loop. But I tried this last night and, sure enough, it works like a charm! So much easier, flatter, and invisible than the mattress stitch! I will continue to practice this until it is mastered. Thanks again!
It doesn’t make sense to me. It doesn’t work, passing the needle back to front undoes everything and the result is not the same as in the video. I must be missing something. Edit ; I found the comment below where you explain the loop. Now it works, thank you so much!. This seam with the needle works much better for me than the other version with the crochet hook. I feel like I can adjust the tension of the seam more easily with this method.
You are brilliant at explaining things, I took up knitting again after 25 yrs ( still learning) I’ve just found and subscribed to your video thank you so much. I am going to try to use this stitch to sew my great granddaughters cardigan. How often do you make these videos?
Thank you Joyce - you are so kind :-) I am happy you like my tutorials, I post a new one every Thursday. If you subscribed to my channel, UA-cam will send you a notification every time a new video is available. Good luck with the cardigan for your great granddaughter! I am sure it will look super cute with this seam :-)
This is perfect for seaming hats. I knit chemo caps and I hate having a huge bump where the seam is, because you can feel it if you're bald. Thank you!
It's even better to knit chemo caps in the round to avoid any seams. This seam is the next best thing. Thank you for helping others by using your knitting skills. It's very kind of you!
Yes, I prefer knitting in the round, if I happen to have the needles in the right size. If I don't I have to knit the pattern flat and seam it. It's not my preferred method but sometimes it's necessary since circular needles are so expensive. So I'm glad you posted how to stitch this seam for such circumstances.
Good question, Moira. The first loop doesn't undo because we do not pull the yarn all the way through. Instead, we create a new loop and run the yarn through it. The new loop keeps the previous loop from unravelling. Experiment with this stitch and you will see what I mean. Have fun!
Thank you, Phuong. I'm still working on the pattern, and so far it seems that the fit needs some improvements before I'll be ready to share the pattern with everyone. When (and if) it is ready, I'll email the link to the pattern to my subscribers.
Of course, Susan. Depending on the crochet stitch you used to make your sweater, you will need to adjust the number of chains of the seam per each stitch of the project. For example, if the sweater is worked in single crochet, join each stitch of one piece to the corresponding stitch of the other piece. If you worked in a double or triple crochet, then you'll need to make two or three chains of the seam for each stitch. It's better to experiment on a swatch before you start seaming the project. Good luck :-)
Sorry, Laurie, I'm still catching up on writing patterns for all the sweaters I've made over the last two years. I've just released a pattern for the sweater I'm wearing in this tutorial - ua-cam.com/video/ZTieMhLuSw8/v-deo.html and now moving on to turning my scribbly notes into a readable pattern for the sweater I'm wearing in this tutorial - ua-cam.com/video/YXoBoMQIztQ/v-deo.html The sweater you asked about will be next :-)
The pattern for this sweater is still a work in progress. I'm not completely happy with the fit and I plan to adjust it. Once the fit is improved, I'll write a detailed pattern.
Sorry, the video wasn't clear enough for you, Loretta. These same instructions are provided in the full photo tutorial. You can read it at www.10rowsaday.com/chain-seam

Nancy, that's such a funny description of the seams, and very much to the point - seaming bulky knits could be quite tricky!
