Doris Speed was a superb actress and she brought Annie Walker to life with her astonishing performances over 23 years in the Street. I always think it was such a shame she didn't get the dramatic exit storyline she deserved - she was one of Coronation Street's icons for sure. I believe it was because she didn't intend to leave the show for good but left to take a break after having a bit of a breakdown (brought on by a burglary and the upset of having her true age 'outed' by a tabloid newspaper - she had successfully knocked 20 years off her true age for donkeys years). So Annie did not get the moving final episode and farewell she should have had - her final scene, in a sort of fair/bring and buy sale was undramatic and unremarkable. But nonetheless, Annie Walker will never be forgotten and as with all the most legendary cast members, Pat Phoenix and Jean Alexander among them, she will live on through the fabulous, gripping performances she gave for all those years, God bless her!
