  • How to improve Power Factor? PF correction and improvement with the capacitor with a practical demo project are explained in this video tutorial.
    How Power factor correction or improvement is done by using a capacitor in parallel to the inductive loads or loads with low power factor, is explained.
    Further, the power factor value is measured in this experiment for tube light, CFL lamp, LED bulb & fan and compared. The method of PF improvement and correction for tube light is explained in the lecture.
    The value of the capacitor used is 1 microfarad each with a 2 M ohm resistor in parallel. An educational tutorial on electrical engineering 164 by G K Agrawal.
    The lecture is given by a person with industrial experience and is useful for electrical, electronic communication, and power electronics engineering students, project work, and also Physics students.

      1- My house voltage is about 240V. But I used for short time for demo only. If we want for long term use, then we should take about 400V ac type for good life. This is to take care over voltae, voltage spike etc.
      2- Best is, to replace choke type tubelight with LED bulb / LED tube light. Within 1 year entire cost may be recovered.

      what is load, if load pf is v good, then pf will become bad and current will inctease, or if capacitor value is more, pl tell your load and capacitor value

    This video is just a tutorial to help you understand PF of various devices. But our respected sir never said that reducing the PF will actually reduce your power bill. Lower PF will just increase your reactive power(not real power). And our meters are designed to measure real power only. But yes this lower pf increases the load(by increasing the current) on supply power momentarily. So for a heavy industry, the load on the wire increases significantly. This does not change their real power consumption but the momentarily increase in current increases their max demand graph thus making them pay more for fixed charges. For example if you run a low pf device with real power consumption of 2 KW but reactive power of 3 kw, then govt would charge you fixed charges for 3 kw, however, you never consumed a real power of more than 2kw. For industries this gap is huge and they end up paying more. So they go with using these capacitors.
    And of course, adding an unwanted set of capacitors will surely increase you power consumption little bit. It will consume like a 20W led bulb constantly..

    I am suffering from some peoblem that is i used to add an essential load of factory to a 11/4. 33 v 1600 kva trns but when there is no inductive load in factory except the essential load (led,fan, single phase motor etc) the power factor go led
    What is the cause can you please be know the fault took place and where from the pf leding. Please oblige me by knowing the fact

    Agar poore ghar ka load 10kw hai ..(with all equipment on ).
    Toh power factor kaise pta chalega ..
    Konsa ik instrument use hota hai jisse power factor pta chal ske ..or uske bad ye calculate karna hai k 10kw load pe kitne KVa ka stablizer sufficient hoga. .
    Ye sab power factor se pta chlega so ghar ka power factor pta krnae ka method btaen...

    sir in our plant we were producing 340MW,freq 50.1,
    mvar -63 and mva 342.

      It is suitable for small load, I connected 1KW load, it is not able to take.

      House me power factor penlty nahee lagtee hai. Lekin power factor theek hone se fayede neeche likhe hai.
      1- Wire aur switch me current kam ho jayegee , to wire loss kam hoga, wire garam bhee kam hoga.
      2- Agar UPS hai to chota size kaa ( less KVA) lagegaa.
      Aapne video me dekha hoga kee, LED bulb kaa power factor good hota hai aur power bhee less hotee hai. Aap LED bulb ya lED tube light kaa use kare.

      but Sir phase difference is very less that is around 1.12 micro second
      then I am using Theta =2*pi*f*time
      then PF=COS (Theta)
      then it is coming around 0.93

    Y we use pf bank in industry.

      1- In homes, load is less and PF penalty is not there.
      2- In Industry Load is to much, and PF penalty is also there.

    It is TRUE that capacitance in parallel with the load WILL increase your power factoe BUT electricity companies do not charge your bill based on power factor . The amount of REAL power consumed is the same so your monthly bill will NOT decrease I am unhappy to tell you . Do you NOT think that a PFC or power factor correction device for residential premises would be selling by now like hot cakes . Of course it would BUT it does NOT.

      In college you study and gain knowledge on many thing which are not used in homes.
      You get knowledge on many thing which you may not use in full life.
      PF penalty is very much there in the industries and they should learn the concept.
      Even in home also, someone can use this knowledge and try to reduce current and losses in cables.
      It is sad that you want to learn only those thing which are usefull in home only, that to just by imagination that it will never be useful in home.
      Gaining knowledge is always good.
