Thane is a metropolitan city in the northwestern part of the Indian state of Maharashtra, a close neighbor of the city of Mumbai and a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It is situated in the north-eastern part of Salsette Island.
Thane city is one of the seven taluks of Thane district and is entirely in Thane taluk; Also, it is the headquarters of the eponymous district. Distributed over an area of about 147 square kilometers (57 sq mi) with a population of 1,841,488, Thane city is the 15th most populous city in India with a population of 1,890,000 as of 2011 census.
