Love that you have just made a really traditional dish. Most people associate Indian food with stereotypical naan, poppadoms, samosas etc but this is really Indian food that I eat at home
But thats cause its a Gujarati dish from the looks of it. I have never eaten dhokli in my life. For me, papad and samosa ARE Indian food I eat at home cause I am North Indian.
@irregularexpression Well I am sure many in India have never eaten this dish their entire life. Sure, it is an Indian dish but definitely not a pan Indian dish. I am a South Indian and I have eaten this dish and like it. But the only reason I got to eat it is because my wife happened to spend her childhood in Ahmedabad.
She’s an amazing chef. I have her book in hardback and I think she’s literally such a warm person. I haven’t ever met her in person but her food looks like a big hug. I’m Of Bangladeshi Descent But omg the flavours are comforting
This video made me so happy! It's wonderful getting to watch such kind, lovely, positive people. And this dish looks incredible - can't wait to try it!

I love Indian Food it's hot & spicy. Lentils are full of protein and fibre and the spices help avoid cold and the flu because they can boost the immune system.
Again stereotype on Indian food as hot and spicy. India has 28 states and every states has their own cuisines and food habits. Indian food has mostly mix up of various spices (herbs) which is not spicy or hot. Indian food is not restricted into only naan, chicken tikka masala or butter chicken. We have hundreads of various cuisines which has not been promoted in outside of India. But again food with Spices is not hot or spicy.
This looks delicious! Going to a vegan Diwali dinner this week in my favourite Indian restaurant Chakra, in Greystones in Ireland! Going to have to try this recipe out at home too... 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️
I made just the dal tonight without the dhokli, and it was the first time my toor dal has ever been perfectly to my taste. It was easy to follow the recipe. Thanks Maunika and Ella! I am going to invite friends over for dinner and this is sure be a hit with everyone.

there is no Indian pasta, that Pasta name is given just for the sake of western peoples convenience to relate with it. we have separate names for every dish we have and we have thousands of them.
I did this recipe yesterday, it was amazing. I didn't have all the ingredients but I'll leave some tips here of what I used as substitutes: Ajwan - used same amount of dried thyme Pigeon peas - used same amount of red lentils (without skin) Asafoetida - used same amount of garlic powder Curry leaves - used 1 tbsp of curry powder Mild chili powder - used same amount of paprika plus a pintch of strong chilly for a bit of spice Tamarind paste - used the juice of half a lemon and 1/2 tbsp brown sugar (could use molasses) Jaggery - same amount of brown sugar And it was sooooo tasty!! Amazing recipe
I love the dish Dal Bhat from Napal. This is a spiced up version of it with pasta and not rice. Will be totally making this!😁 It will go into my postpartum meal plan 😉! Thanks a bunch for all your yummy recipies.
Add a spoonful of clarified butter ( ghee) after serving in the bowl...and you will be in heaven...it tastes just amazing.. Here in North India we cook without jeggry..and it tastes awesome..🤤🤤🤤🤤
I had to change just a bit the seasoning since I forgot to buy some spices.. but still, this is brilliant! So worm, nourishing and with the most delicate flavour... I love it, thanks Ella and Monica!!
Daal Dokri is a staple in my home, especially on those cold wintery nights when you want to stay in and cuddle up on the sofa. I also mix it up by adding a bit of quinoa to the daal or sometimes even butter beans, which gives the daal a buttery texture 😍
There's this Indian (Gujarati) dish (this video reminded me), dal dhokali, that involves a tangy spicy lentil stew with herby pasta made from wheat and chickpea flour. It's healthy and simple comfort food.
I wish I could give this comment more likes👍👍👍...It also requires a lot of brains to actually avoid copying the accent of a place you have settled in, because we subconciously feel that doing so will help us to blend in with others. To tackle this natural flow is also an art.
um let's not attack people for assimilation culture. non-european accents in western countries are literally a red flag for abuse and discrimination. they're not trying to be pretentious, they're trying to survive.
@Kim sung Un I'm not negating your experience, but also it's extremely different to be a brown person with an accent in a western country. The fact remains that people with accents are less likely to be rented to and hired, and are more likely to be victims of xenophobia.
Loved the recipie even though I couldn't follow it exactly due to lack of certain ingredients like mustard leaves and ajwan. I have to say I needed more flour on 100ml of water in order to make the non sticky harder pasta dough. In the end I added a bit of cooked spinach, instead of mustard leaves to add to color :) I know it can't replace the original taste, but still it tasted good together.
matzuky you can modify, no big deal. Dal with spinach is a fairly common dish separately. Ajwain is carrom seeds which are ok to skip. Mustard seeds and curry leaves, the latter might be hard to source unless you know of a local Indian grocery story (or south Asian). But it’s ok to skip.
Love that you have just made a really traditional dish. Most people associate Indian food with stereotypical naan, poppadoms, samosas etc but this is really Indian food that I eat at home
