I have been stuck in 1940 on my Japan save because I have no idea how to organize my fleets for the Pacific war and assign them to all of the sea tiles. This video is a godsend.
That makes me worry what you have built (if you have MTG DLC or not)
That’s funny you literally are like me rn
I figured it out
Historically, submarines could go east through Gibraltar but the current wouldn't let them sneak west. The Med was a black hole for U-boats.
Interesting.
The straits of Gibraltar are a narrow passage where the water is relatively shallow. A submarine would be discovered very easily passing through that area.
Karl Donitz has been recorded as one of the Axis powers submarine captains to do it both ways.
It's not that it was impossible due to currents it's that it was virtually impossible due to the likelihood of being discovered.
Italian submariners saild West trough Giblartar strait
@@markcostello5120 In the film Das Boot their mission requires them to pass through The Strait of Gibraltar which all men know is a suicide mission
@@sirscrotum Was looking for exactly this comment.
The strip of water can be as narrow as few miles across and the water is shallow, so when the U-boot tried to pass the Strait it got immediately detected, even though it was during the night AND almost sunk.
I'm surprised that pdx decided to include this little manouver but for every sub.
Ohh, I forgot to mention. Death stacks are king. Just blob your entire surface fleet together and throw it at the enemy.
If you don't have proper AA in your navy, then this is a good way to also lose your entire fleet to kamikaze spam. Just make sure to have green air, or have proper AA defenses in your fleet.
I wouldn't include subs in the death stack. Their torps seem to do very little in large battles and they hurt your positioning.
Why is there not an effective stacking penalty?
@@_-Wade-_ there isba positioning penalty but for the most part it isn't bad enough to not make more ships better.
@@71Cloak The Devs have to realize the absurdity of doom stacks hammering each other in the Channel... Why not combat width for sea zones?
How to navy you say? It's a simple 2 step plan
Step 1: build naval Bombers
Step 2: profit
Great overview, and yes mine laying is underrated. I remember AI Romania mine laying the Black Sea, and making it impractical for me (USSR) to do naval invasions. Shame it’s banned in MP
@pittman789 then why are they playing hoi4
You should also do a tutorial for the Pacific War since it is the greatest programmed naval battle in the Game where the US def has the advantage because of their outscaling potential.
Also, Japan has a unique feature which is Cruisers Submarines which allows them to have a Patrol Fleet of Submarines
I did a 2 part guide for Japan that ended with the capitulation of the USA.
@@71Cloak What are Torpedo Cruisers good for? Are they better than cruiser/submarines and would it make sense to replace them with Torpedo Cruisers?
I usually don't do the Torpedo Cruiser focus before 1939, that's not enough time to build a lot of them I guess?
@@marthvader14 nothing. Dds with torpedoes are more cost-effective and harder to hit.
I appreciate what you're doing. I haven't seen so detailed guides on HOI4! You deserve way more subs! Keep it up :)
Oh man, thanks for the idea for using convoy raiders to bait out the enemy fleet -- that's the part I was missing right there
Thanks for this guide. I've done ok with navy but this cleared up some questions.
First video that clearly explains the purpose of naval missions!
Would love an air guide :D
I know - just asking that outs me as a total noob - but when I see people hitting all these buttons and splitting air groups, setting training on certain groups for a certain time limit, then having the planes rejoin another group, etc. I'm like "wtf are they doing?" Also, I have had *thousands* of planes in the air but not had superiority - and what the hell is "not enough supply" for planes on the air view map?
Your channel rocks. Best HoI4 channel out there.
The not enough supply on your air map indicates a lack of supply for your ground troops somewhere in that airzone. This is because you can use transport planes to supply ground troops with an air mission. So it is just to show you that it would be useful to do that mission there but there is no actual penalty to your planes because of that indicator
i dont think air is that hard to manage but it is very complex, i have like 150 hours in hoi4 and i just press the buttons and just leave it because i usually have more planes than the enemy
I the rules allow it, for the UK doing some minelayers is really important, simply because it will almost always deny sealion to happen. Meaning you can spend less resources on your homeland. And minelaying can also be done using planes if you've the technology required
Minelaying destroys performance and balance
@@eskihesap9985That's why I believe rules still need to be created to control mines, mods can also improve the balance of mines I believe. Performance wise Multiplayer mods with the purpose of removing most of the useless stuff will make mine's lag relative, and probably okayish.
Thanks, great tutorial. Talking about producing and deploying ships could have been useful too
This video helped me so much, thank you
ahhh holy he11 thank you for this.
I needed something that was quick and concise, not too indepth and not leaving the improtant stuf fout. Thank you much! Asia better watch out, here comes Japan!
That's super helpful, thanks a lot! I couldn't wrap my head around the system at all on my own, felt like a constant struggle with the interface, just cause I didn't understand it :D
Edit: After seeing your video and 3 hours in, I've gone from hating to loving the naval side of the game. My French marines are islandjumping like nobody's business, patrol boats are out and death stack of the best starting ships of Germany + Italy + France. I think I made a leap and have to turn up the game difficulty again :D
I have constantly sucked at navy and just practically ignored it. In a recent game as USA, I lost my entire fleet of capitol ships to Japan in one battle. I, obviously, suck at navy. I am going to binge watch and note down all of 71Cloak’s naval and air videos, and then do another game where I try to rollover the Japanese. I will update when I’m finished and begin the game and then the result.
Wow this just makes sense, you don't patrol the main fleet that's a big waste of fuel you send scouts to find the enemy and then you send in the big boats
love the tactic to make prewar dd's useful and nasty
Well done.
Dude, this channel is fcking awesome 🔥
Miss you
I am surprised this video is only 15 minutes long.
Me: I have played over 180 hours of hoi4
Also Me: I still have no idea what the hell I am doing
i have 157 hours and still figuring out how to actually play :/
Hoi4 is one of the few games where someone with over 100 hours ingame is considered new lol.
Thanks, but could you turn down/off the music? When you make a lot of cuts, the music jumps are kinda jarring.
this, just mute the damn music it's so repetitive and annoying
When you move all the way to Malaysia to rendezvous but the fleet you were ordered to meet there are in London :(
So how does convoy escort work exactly does it only protect convoys in that sea zone that they are placed in and once the convoys leave that sea zone they stop following them or do they follow them on their entire trip to and from their destination?
god D A M N this is a L O T of info
You can also put away some Battlecruisers with some screens for Convoy Raiding.
This will absolutely crush the convoys there.
Going down the Base Strike doctrine allows you to have 5 carriers in a taskforce composition which is op imo.
Do Scout Planes also give naval reconaissance?
You can convoy raid with anything that has attack if you are just trying to sink them, but battlecruisers are unlikely to draw out the enemy fleet becauwe the battle won't last long enough.
Base strike does not reduce carrier over stacking penalty, it reduces carrier over crowding penalty. Allows you to put more planes on each carrier (still not worth it).
Scout plains will give you intel, so will other aircraft.
@@71Cloak Oh, I thought Base Strike gave me the option to put a fifth Carrier in my Fleet Composition lmao.
Do Scout Planes give more Intel since well they're scout planes?
@@Luca-ys5dv You probably won't need nearly as much but their is a cap.
As a content creator I highly suggest muting music in game so when you cut it doesn’t cut the music. Then you can add music during editing
Hey 71Cloak, I have a question
What countries, apart from USA. Japan, and UK, would you consider fun/worth to build a surface fleet with? (No sub spam)
Reason I ask is because I have tried with a few countries (like AH, USSR, Kingdom of Portugal/Brasil) to build a surface fleet (not necesarily big), but have seen it usually takes me until mid 40s to make something competent.
You could always do a naval game as italy.
Most countries do not have the ability to create a new navy quickly. You are going to have to play into the mid 40s as most nations.
I T A L Y
Some people recommend something like 1 CL with max spotting combined with a handful of cheap DDs as a patrol task force. What's the advantage of this compared to just using a single spotter CL? Is it to make it easier for them to get away if they get caught by the enemy?
"Is it to make it easier for them to get away if they get caught by the enemy." probably. You could honestly play this game without ever using the patrol mechanic though.
3:38 "If you right click you can move the naval bases in" What is this supposed to mean?
Lil Question here... As Japan I conquered Hawaii... But I can't go any further and invade the USA. It says my Fleet doesnt have the Range. So I can't secure the Coast... Is there anything like Assign new homebase? Let me know! :)
do you use dlcs in this video? just asking before using any of this into practice cuz it may be different if you have dlcs
I have all the dlcs. The main one for navy is Main The guns. That should only change how ships are built (designing them is dlc). The naval mission orders and how they work should still be base game.
Im having following problem : So i will use Light Cruisers for patroling but wont Navy bombers destroy them in f.e the english channel qhere alot of air bases located? Can A A counter that and if yes, how much do you need? Also i get confused with max range but thats would be another topic 😂 would be nice if anypne can help me out since i struggle along time bcause of this
yes navy bombers can and will destroy/damage patrol fleets
yes AA helps .. but doesn't 100% protect, it's a war of attrition on both sides but planes tend to be a lot cheaper. imho .. send fighter planes to make navy bombing unattractive, especially supported by local radar.
how much AA? i always add a little AA (typically those hard points where you can only add AA and those hardpoints where you can add those guns which have both AA and light attack[kinda expensive]) but never go primarily for AA .. typically i also push for air dominance so it's more a backup security than anything else
max range, you've seen the range thing in this video (where the fleet got stuck) the range is x km from ports which offer you supply (own and allied) and your fleed always has only as much range as the lowest range of all the ships in it, subs tend to have a bad range, only bet by coastal defense ships
Would you please make a guide on how to use the fleet manager to create fleets and task forces? I checked out several guide but don't understand it at all. Your guides are excellent so it would hopefully work.
Normally I just take the ships and assign them to some admirals for task forces but the ships have different stats.
I tried to do a cruiser submarine taskforce but it automatically went into reserve and such. I really hate the naval management in this game.
It's probably because you put automatic reinforce on or put mor ships than the amount you set
@@waterking1013 Yeah.
The issue I had with submarines and Gibraltar was that their reinforcements would not pass through the zone when the status was contested.
Perhaps reinforcing subs don't count as subs to the game engine?
interesting point.
did anyone test that?
why did i look at this curios i rlly forgot i have no beaches since im playing as hungary
I have a 1000 hours in hoi4 so it's about time to learn how things work.
Same and even after the vid im still slightly confused lol
Doesn't Montreux change how Turkish straits work?
Now do a video on super heavy battleships)))
Hey man, you got a disc server?
What is the mod that adds colour to the navy missions?
Strategic view adjustments.
How do you engage in deep oceans? I'm at war with america rn and their ships are totally invisible to me
There not invisible, the ships aren't present. The US has their fleet on strike force sitting in a port, which is undetectable. Yoy need to engage something so that fleet sallies out. Convoy raiding is my preferred method.
@@71Cloak wow... lucky enough i did *not* waste 5 hours of my time building radars and light cruisers with a million surface detection, that would be silly. (Also i no longer have reliable air coverage where i can find their convoys, i wanna die)
la musica de harry fraud
My navy: NAV Bombers and the cheapest subs you can build. There's no point to a proper navy in HOI4.
You are right there is no real point against the ai anyway. However, multiplayer is a different story. Plus there is the role playing and fun aspect. It’s super interesting to say play Portugal and prevent the Japanese from expanding to other islands due to lack of naval supremacy or it’s awesome to just stop the US DDAY from happening to Germany so they can have like 1 v 1 with Russia
right click does not work
You havent covered how much surface detection you need, therefore how big the patrol fleets need to be.
No amount of surface detection will find a fleet sitting in port.
there's an info shown on your patrol fleet stating low detection (and other), but afairc it's plane and simply more = better (ofc with diminishing returns)
I have 1150 hours and i still dont understand lol
And posted 13 mins ago
Unfortunately, you do not mention naval bombers. This will destroy all of your subs quickly and they do not get attacked by enemy fighter planes. That is why you must have LOTS (if not all slots) filled with anti air. If I am Germany with 500 naval bombers, I will destroy every sub u can build sent to the English channel. Even if all u build is cheap subs.
I have had 2 BB + 8 CL all anti air max go into English channel and the first pop up shows over 100 English naval bombers killed in 1940. Ships are all 1936 vintage. Also, LVL 3 radar + lvl 3 control and 25 naval AA admiral. I have conquered France/Bel/ Neth. The AI English fleet left English Channel due constant losses from continuous naval bombardment and of course Air sup. No naval port raiding of England also.
It's so annoying no video shows HOW TO MAKE NAVY I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO MAKE NAVY NOT HOW TO ATTACK BRITTIAN
Useless
