Building the Tamiya 1/48th Scale F-15C "Eagle" Fighter Jet

  • This video chronicles my build of a 1/48th scale McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle fighter Jet - Tamiya kit #61029.
    I used a mixture of black shading, the marbling/mottling technique, pre-shading, and panel washes to exhibit a weathered effect on the model.
    Clips of the construction, sanding, masking, overall painting and detailing of this model are shown.
    I deviated from the decals supplied in the box to custom brand this jet as a Lakenheath RAF based U.S. F-15.

      Hi Tom, that's great! There are many ways of doing things to get much the same results often. However, the techniques that are the most comfortable for the hobbyist to utilize usually enhance the experience and the end product.

    Fabulous job. After 40+ years, the Eagle remains one of the baddest fighters on the planet.

    I spent 3 years on Okinawa working on the SR-71 and Kc-135 tankers. Across the way were the F-15C models. I watched hundreds taxi by, take off and land, as well as fly overs. Your painting brings out a lot of details that were visible on these hard worked jets. You did a great job on detail and creativity. 👍

    Looks great!!! It’s funny how models are like paintings... they don’t seem to look right until the final 20% of work is carried out. Then it all comes together! Nice job on the weathering!!!!

I am just about to start my own F-15C Tamiya soon and whilst I do not have an airbrush just yet there are many things in your video that have helped me and given me the confidence to try. I used to live in Brandon so as soon as you said, "LN", I knew it was Lakenheath. The flight path went over my garden and that unique sound as the throttle was momentarily pushed, just amazing and I still don't know what caused that amazing sound. You'd also hear it on take-off, just this amazing WHOOOP sound. I'd sit in the car park at the end of the runway and watch. By far my fav US fighter as well. Your build looks amazing. Just amazing. Well done and thank you for sharing.

    That’s a fantastic job and shows what can be accomplished right out of the box.
    My only criticism, and it’s aimed at Tamiya, is that they supplied incorrect nozzles for the C. The C models onwards dispensed with the ‘turkey feathers’ on the nozzles.

I was at the top of the pass when I heard the F15 approaching. The pilot waived at me as he passed by and entered a barrel role. He then accelerated down Langstrath towards Keswick and vanished rapidly. It was rather exciting to be honest.

    This was one of the first Tamiya aircraft kits i ever built. my uncle gave me one for my birthday back in the mid 1980's. I did a fairly decent job with the painting etc considering i wouldn't discover airbrushes for a few more years. The big mistake i made though, was trying to secure the nose weight with a lot of polystyrene cement. The nose cone melted somewhat leaving a disfigured nose cone :( Still, everything behind the nose looked pretty good :)
    I learned a lot from that kit, mainly that too much cement will melt the plastic, and was able to put most of it to good use in later kits.

    Hi, I'm a new subscriber and have just watched 3 videos in a row, this one included. Such amazing work. I'm 52 and haven't made a model for a long time now, but I'm looking to get back into it. I currently have 13 to build lol. My favourite aircraft is the Phantom, I grew up near RAF Wattisham, but used to go to Bentwaters, Woodbridge and Lakenheath a lot when they had F-4s. Seeing you do this Reaper Eagle made my day 😊
    But for me it's Phantoms Phorever 😉 Anyway thanks for the tips and awesome videos.

      Hi strawnobi, I pretty much do black shading exclusively now, but I may do a combination of the two techniques for Project #34 when I get to that one. Glad you liked this F-15 😄

    Very well done! The weathering is convincing and well thought out. Although I was stationed with F-15's at Holloman AFB and none of our crew chiefs would have let their jets look like this. There were too many newbies or goof-ups being gainfully employed at the wash rack for that.

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  7 років тому

      That's good to know! When I was looking at images for the project, I did see some F-15s that apparently had no newbies stationed at the base to work the wash racks.

    Love watching these videos!
    I have this dilemma. I've always been a 1:32 modeller (for fighters). Currently have a Tamiya 32 Spitfire, ITaerli F-35 on the stash. So i need some others to compliment them. I've ordered a 1:32 F-16C (tamiya) and will get a 1;32 MiG-29SMT for equal measure :P
    But I've considered going back to 48 scale. It's just more sensible for modern fighters. The sizes are manageable both in storing and during assembly/painting. And there are a lot more 48 scale options on offer so you can have a complete collection!
    But it's really hard to get back to 48 after 32 scale haha. I need to escape this megalomaniac mindset! Help!!
    Epic build btw!

      Actually, I am planning to do an F-16C with a complex camouflage pattern in the near future :-)

  • @PeterBudavari
    @PeterBudavari 4 роки тому

    Yes it is nice what you've done here! Just a thought, I would not do double masking for the camo pattern though. I would do the lighter color on the whole model first than mask it for the camo spray on the darker camo and post shade it if necessary. This way you would never end up with gaps and strong double edges where the two camo color meets. Also you can use plasticine rolled up for the contour, the edge of the darker camo color to achieve softer color transition. I guess it would worth the try once... :-)

    Absolutely beautiful. Slightly disappointed that you didn't go for one of the 'MiG-killers' though, 4027 looks beautiful with the green stars on the side, for MiG 23 and Mirage F1 kills. Seeing as you've left the cockpit open, there's another little detail that'd look spectacular if you have some free time, I once saw a C land at LN with a folded flag tucked into the front of the canopy. Not sure if it was patriotism, or a sign of respect to the fallen, but it was a lovely touch. I have some lovely shots from the approach at LN.
    The guys at there are a good bunch......and very well adapted to the spotting culture here in the UK. I think it was Dec 29th 2014, they were the only base active in the UK over that period of the Christmas holiday. They threw up 38 aircraft that day, and hundreds of us were overjoyed!

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  6 років тому +1

      Hi Private Custard, also sometimes U.S. jets carry the flag in the cockpit during flights to present later to retiring members of the military.

    • @PrivateCustard
      @PrivateCustard 6 років тому

      That may well be a possibility. I don't think they suffered any losses around that time. The only loss was one of their two D variants during that period. Complete control was lost in the air near Spalding in Lincolnshire. The pilot fought the aircraft away from a local village and ejected with 2 seconds to spare. 86-0182 was a total loss. He was doing circuits and bumps the day before, so I ended up sending them about 20 full sized frame filling photos for the investigation on request.
      Oh, another thing, have you considered doing a Typhoon FGR-4? Just asking, as a few years ago they painted one up in WW2 Hurricane camouflage, with Flt Lt James Brindley Nicolson VC's numbers and red devil. I have some awesome reference photos, taken during a media event on base at Coningsby!
