Look into Tagore and Kazi Nazrul's works, just reading the English translation will give you an idea about what Bengal is like and a better understanding of cultural norms here.

History of Portuguese merchants 'arrival happened in Chittagong 800 years ago. Still, they have some old Portuguese houses around Chittagong. You can read in Wikipedia about Portuguese settlers in Chittagong.
